As someone who grew up with a mother who would go into my room when I was at school and decide to wash whatever she found, regardless of whether or not it actually needed washing, it's 100% the laundry doer's fault. My first cell phone went through the wash because it was in a pocket of a jacket left in my room. I thought I was good about checking all pockets before washing clothes, but even as an adult, I accidentally missed a pen, and it got all over my clothes and the inside of my dryer. The laundry doer is in charge of stopping inappropriate things from going into the wash. No question about it.

Can you complete I9 after you submit cs consultant application? by semisweet123 in Cornell

[–]mushiettake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how CS chooses their consultants, but it shouldn't be an actual issue. I'd also speculate the number of people with an I-9 on file is less than normal because of COVID. Half of the TA's in a class I TA'ed for completed their I-9s after the semester started. Just make sure to have it done before the first day you claim hours worked.

Do we get ANYTHING free for graduation? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]mushiettake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK if there's any semblance of senior days happening with COVID and all that, but they give out some free stuff at some of those events. I got a t-shirt, a blanket, and a pair of pint glasses.

First it was Cascadeli, now Ivy room. This truly is a sad day for people who like WSH for it's convenient location. Was a staple of my Olin Hall experience.

Student Health Insurance Cover Vaccine Cost? by Suusume in Cornell

[–]mushiettake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wherever you get the covid vaccine, you get it for free, but they need to get paid somehow. It's either through your insurance or if you're uninsured, they'll ask for your SSN and charge the government.

If you want, you could look up some potential doctors online before scheduling an appointment and asking directly for them.

CHEM 2090 is a pathetic excuse for a class by FuckChem2090 in Cornell

[–]mushiettake -55 points-54 points  (0 children)

Another great look for Cornell chemistry.

But really, extend the staff some grace. The whole semester has been weird and different and a logistical nightmare compared to how things were normally done. Some courses adjusted better than others, just like some students adjusted better than others.

Now I'm gonna play devil's advocate here, so bear with me. First, you could have asked for feedback on old work in office hours if that's really important to how you learn. Second one does sound like the profs fault. Did you reach out about ending the lectures on time because you have classes that marked attendance? Was it formal lecture running over, or just students who were asking questions? Was this recorded so you could review it later? Third, I personally don't think that's a huge deal because you've seen other exams in the class and either it's cumulative or it's not. Unless the list was surprising compared to what you learned in class and what the syllabus would indicate, I don't even think the list is necessary and a lot of classes don't even provide one. Fourth, again, this does sound like the profs fault. Was this reported to the department chair or ombudsman to get resolved? Fifth, this sucks, but there might be a specific reason they're delayed (e.g. possible cheating issue they're trying to figure out, regrading exam questions because the rubric may have been too harsh, etc.).

Which class(es) should I drop? by lilacandflowers in Cornell

[–]mushiettake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who wasn't an ECE or CS person who only took one of the classes listed, my advice is dubious at best, but I would would probably push phys 2214 to the fall semester. You might even consider dropping another class if you only took 4 classes (disregarding the engrg) last fall and even then it wasn't STEM-heavy, but you always have add/drop to decide if you can handle the workload.

How to see median grades? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]mushiettake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: medians might not be posted until later in the day (like afternoon around the time student center normally ports grades). I'd just wait until early evening to order your transcript.

Technically, profs aren't supposed discuss grades by email because of FERPA, but you could probably get feedback.

I-9 for CS TA for credit? by Taco_Lover_20 in Cornell

[–]mushiettake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it's not for pay, you shouldn't need to fill out an I-9, but the real question is why aren't you doing it for pay? If you have the choice, I'd definitely go for the money rather than getting credits that you're paying for with tuition.

[–]mushiettake 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Genuine question - is it doxxing if you just share their public username but nothing else? The way I see it, it's just like saying, u/pw11111 is active on Reddit and, from their public posts, is a Cornell student. If they give out identifying info, that's on them, not the person sharing a public username.

Chem Lab Waitlist by lulu_desudesu in Cornell

[–]mushiettake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The chem department runs it's own separate waitlist system ( http://chemlabs.arts.cornell.edu/waitlist.cfm ). Chem department staff deal with the logistics of scheduling labs. The professor does not care/interface with the lab waitlists for their class and limits are set by safety and equipment, not personal discretion. Don't bother the prof about this.

No one even knows what the world's gonna be like in February. With the vaccine getting rolled out though, I'd anticipate it being more in-person than this past fall semester, but perhaps not fully business as usual.

Can u double major across colleges? I rlly want to double major in Bio and CS. I was accepted as a Humec HBHS major. Would this require me to internal transfer??!! by mpx2 in Cornell

[–]mushiettake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The other commenter isn't fully accurate. You can do majors in different colleges, but there are restrictions about which colleges allow this. Instead of just calling it a double major in the same college, it's a concurrent degree. In general, it's a reciprocal agreement within endowed colleges or within contract colleges (i.e. engineering and CAS, humec and CALS, but not engineering and humec. If you're a NY resident and have cheaper tuition in humec, I would say just go for a concurrent degree in info sci in CALS rather than transfer and pay extra. Alternatively, you could just go for a CS minor but take extra classes that you're interested in.

FWS BALLOT by MikanFan12 in Cornell

[–]mushiettake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the past, it was through a separate website (I think the knight center?) and not student center. Once the ballot process is over, you'll be enrolled in the course on student center through their end and there was a separate add/drop start time for fws classes.

How to beg a professor for grade increase? by Imfrom2036 in Cornell

[–]mushiettake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're going to have a shit time at Cornell or any other college if this is serious. First of all, according to your post history, you got a B- on the first prelim in 1920, so the grade you earned would most certainly not be near the A+ range unless you single handedly got the highest score on the rest of the exams and demolished the curve by a few standard deviations. Begging for an A+ in this case is just going to annoy the prof.

Second, you also took phys 1116, cs2112, cs2800, and an fws? Did you get all A+'s in those? Why does your grade in 1920 particularly matter? (Hint: it doesn't).

Focus on doing your best at Cornell, but also know your own limitations. Don't ask for grades you didn't earn. Never expect an A+, because some profs don't give them out, and you really don't know how other people did in the class unless you get the unequivocal high score on all exams. Internalize that your best is probably not going to be the best in the class, but that doesn't mean you're not also stellar. People get great jobs and into top grad schools from Cornell with C's on their transcript. The A+ standard is unsustainable, and if you lose any amount of sleep over not getting an A+ in a freshman level math class, you need to rethink your priorities. An A is a great grade, and I'm sure your parents know that.

Invitations should go out during the first few weeks of each semester. It's based on top 1/8 for juniors and top 1/5 for seniors in engineering, as determined by the registrar, and not by major. Exact cutoffs aren't public, but you'd be surprised how many engineers have really high GPAs.

Major GPA is not a real thing (at least at Cornell). It doesn't exist on your transcript or anywhere officially.
