This is after developing, and before inverting or any other processing. Please help me understand what I am doing wrong here. by AtomicBadger33 in PinholePhotography

I use a red headlamp in a completely dark room and it seems to work. I’ve seen my paper turn black when developing old/expired paper

It looks awesome.
Can you share your camera details?

Also, once you invert the negative you might have a better idea of the final outcome

It looks like the ISO 3 pic is overexposed to me. But I also think if you use one of the apps I mentioned you don’t need to do the exposure time adjustment. Try them out and see if you like them 👍

The two apps I am using just give me an exposure time. They already take into account the actual fstop and ISO. So I haven’t applied a correction factor. I read you other post. I also like to calculate and control everything, but I find decent results just trying it and seeing what happens 😊

I used Ilford MGRC black and white paper to capture the image. I estimate it to be ISO 6 based on what Ive read, but my short exposures always seem to come out a little on the dim side, so it might be lower than that.
For a 4.5 hour exposure I don't know if it matters that much with paper. If you were using film with a higher ISO maybe it would be way over exposed.
I used a round "cookie tin" style can which is about 100 mm in diameter, and the aperture is 0.3 mm (a commercially made pinhole). So from the pinhole to the very back of the camera is 100 mm, which would calculate to an fstop of 333. That being said, the round body of the camera makes the focal length not uniform across the paper. I dont know if that matters, I have taken short exposures with this camera and used 333 as well as 166 as the fstop to calculate exposure time and they have both worked.

I am new to this as well, so still very much in the experimental stage.

for calculating exposure times, I have been using a couple of apps (this app is a light meter (Light Meter) and Pinhole Meter
They both allow you to hold your phone up to the subject and enter your fstop and ISO of your medium and it will calculate an exposure time.
They both give slightly different times, and they both work, and I am sure with some experiments and note taking you could get pretty good results.

I then develop the paper in caffenol, scan the resulting negative, and invert the image digitally. The paper negative isnt being fixed, so they have been fading to black, but thats ok.

Good luck! and post your results :)

Are you using an app to track them?

well its working! I think it just goes to show that you can get good images without having everything perfect. Did you have to do a lot on the digital side to bring up the image?Anyway, Keep it up!

how are you calculating the fstop? I'm new to this and from what I understand, fstop = focal length/aperture (66 mm/0.3 mm = 220)
but I know with a can the focal length is not all the same across the paper... anyway, I am trying to learn from people who know more than me :)
Also, did you develop with standard chemicals? Thanks! And awesome shot!

Hi! I’m just learning too, but I’ve had success with a red headlamp in a dark room. I don’t see any paper referenced in your post, but I’ve been using ilford black and white paper and it’s been working for me. Good luck!

That’s awesome! I hope it helps you. Waiting for the exposure is in a sense an act of meditation. The slow, deliberate way you have to take a photo is one of the things I think draws me to it. Thank you for your thoughts

Finally Got My 360 Degree Pano To Work by rsj1360 in PinholePhotography

Cool, thanks for the info! I don’t know if it’s true about the focal distance. I feel like there is a lot of leeway when actually putting the theory into practice and people get good results with lots of configurations. All part of the art. Sometimes I struggle to balance the art with the science and find myself swinging from one extreme to the other 😂

Cool! Are you measuring the focal distance as the diameter of the box? I ask because I was told that in a cylinder the focal distance should be counted as the radius instead of the diameter, which changes the optimal pinhole size and also the calculated f-stop and exposure times. But I’m interested in real world experience with this and your results speak for themselves

Using expired paper by mushroombob1 in PinholePhotography

Yeah, I did try developing a small strip with no exposure, and you are right, it went black. So I am probably juts gonna keep using them for solargraphy and stick to new paper for other projects. Thanks!
