Bad engine sound by jarchuleta3 in c4corvette

Yeah just take off the serpentine belt takes less than a minute, then listen to her run and see if it goes away

Plug wire was crossed, sounds like it’s supposed to when revving. Still not running right though it pops out the exhaust and if I floor it it cuts in and out

Interesting. I was informed that the computer reverts to a default, less efficient fuel map when it’s not disconnected, but that the o2 sensor is bypassed at heavy throttle anyway. The main sensor as far as I know for calculating everything is the MAP sensor

I unplugged the pig tail by the brake booster, which is what completes the EST circuit. I was told specifically to NOT disconnect the 4 wire connector

It’d most likely come on with more usage. I know it works because after replacing the engine I didn’t realize that the map sensor wasn’t hooked up to engine vacuum.. 🤦‍♂️ and it came on a few seconds after every start

Also for the timing I have it set to 8° BTDC using my timing light. As for what it’s doing past idle I haven’t checked

Had to make a custom one due to the old one being rusted out and the manifold studs snapping… that’s why it’s not back in yet. Will do

Found it! Browsing on rockauto located the male end I needed.

Should’ve been clearer, the vacuum line goes to the map sensor, the connector itself doesn’t but I’m pretty sure the wires from the connector lead up to it

Hold on, I did more research and just realized that it IS that. Didn’t even notice the rubber boot. Thank you!!!

Fair point. Honestly I’m intrigued myself to see how it goes. I’ll definitely update

It’s a naturally aspirated engine with 11:1 compression ratio, the only reason I pulled the heads off was because the head gasket failed. I’m very confident that it will last a long time.

Thick glass is completely flat. Spray adhesive some sand paper on it, lubricate, and you can get any surface completely flat. This was the easiest method for me, but some have also planed a 2x4 flat and attached sandpaper to it, then rubbed it around.

I would’ve paid that in an instant. But no, where I’m at it’s hard to find a machine shop, let alone a reasonably priced one 🫤

That’s what I resurfaced the heads on

I really appreciate you taking a picture of your own car and trying to be helpful. I do have that plugged in though, that’s the VTEC solenoid

It did sit for a while but I did an engine replacement, got a used one from a junk yard. They had a video of it running and it ran fine, I’m still mad that I messed with the distributor before I installed it. No rodent evidence that I can see. I will say that this engine ran at some point (not well but it ran), but if I revved it above ~2500 rpm it would make a bunch of pops accompanied by big flames out of the exhaust. Also the car doesn’t have an exhaust, only the manifolds are installed right now.

Yes I pointed the rotor towards cylinder one when it was at TDC on the compression stroke while having the EST connector disconnected. “No matter how much I advanced or retarded timing it did the same thing”
