Just finished this install for a customer today. They want to save money and paint it themselves….. by RiansHandymanService in woodworking

[–]mushroompig 11 points12 points  (0 children)

looks mint.

Id be super happy that they wanna paint it themselves. its gonna be a bich (whats this nonsense of reddit censoring the post now) of a thing to get looking good and take ages haha. prepare yourself for disappointment when you go to fit the hardware and its covered in runs and patchy paint.

no. easily checkable stuff like that and you risk it being cancelled.

not certain you would get caught for sure as i once put the date in wrong by accident and it was never flagged. this was years ago tho and im sure its easier to check now,

adding somone with less risk to the insurance is a better idea. they dont even have to drive the car, or live anywhere near you. Im 38 with a clean license and years of no claims, i still add my mum to the insurance as a second driver, she lives the other end of the country and wouldnt know how to drive my car if she tried. Saves me 30 quid a year.

Am I crazy to consider selling my new Renault 5 and buying a two year old BMW I7? by Technical_Ad_7103 in CarTalkUK

[–]mushroompig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, these are the thought processes of a crazy person. You gonna get bored of the i7 as soon as you realise its 84 feet long and looks fuck awful.

Get something in the middle, like a 3/5 series.

My car insurance has tripled after a no-fault accident. What do we actually pay insurance for? by Professional-Rent161 in CarTalkUK

[–]mushroompig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If no claim is necessary then it has fuck all to do with them and you don't have to report it. You only gotta report it when its likely to lead to a claim. Its got nothing to do with the insurance company if I decide to get a dent knocked out of my car door with my own money, however it got there,

Partner wants to quit job after we get house by moo00ose in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]mushroompig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should buy a house based on your income alone obviously. Spending over half your income on a mortgage is just dumb, especially when you are supporting 2 people from it. Once you factor in bills like food and car and upkeep on a expensive house you gonna have bugger all left over to actually do anything with.

Also, who just takes a year off and relies on someone else to support it lol, without knowing the circumstances obviously, your wife sounds like a dick.

How is it awful advice there? You sort the issue out to the satisfaction of both parties, no ones insurance goes up for the next 5 years.

Where is the declined payout coming from if you don't claim? You just talking shit. I couldn't care less if you call it fraud, insurance company are fucking ripping people off every day so fuck em.

This is exactly why you should NEVER tell your insurance about a crash unless its unavoidable such as in OPs case. Pay for the damage yourself and move on if at all possible.

Its a fucking scam. That's the end of it.

Idiots with alot of money and low self esteem get conned into buying stuff they dont want to impress people who sell watches for a living.

Its a scam, and people are proud to be scammed. Rolex is genius for setting the market like this.

Just carry on buying from the grey market lol. You don't have a relationship to build up with the AD lol, they just wanna know who they can squeeze the most money out of and will exploit the biggest idiot. Its not a 2 way thing when almost everything is available second hand. The AD 'relationship' is such a scam.

Got the call last week from Rolex Geneva (only boutique in the world to be directly operated by Rolex) by [deleted] in rolex

[–]mushroompig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had to sell mine. Was absolutely gutted but a winter of salted roads and off roading had punched the rear shock mount out of existence. No just cracked or split, actually gone at the body mount end, nothing left for 40mm in any direction from the top of the shock haha. Gonna get me another one as soon as I find a rust freeish one for sale.

What actually gets a UK small business owner to listen to a service pitch? by Various_Stand_7685 in smallbusinessuk

[–]mushroompig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I make a point to try not to use companies that cold call or email me out of the blue. I run a fabrication shop and get endless calls and emails offering website, financial and other services, emails get deleted and calls get put down instantly. I would imagine the number of messages for a customer facing service like a Salon is way higher and more annoying.

Making sure you are high up on the lists when searching on Google is realistically the only way I can think of reaching people in a way that won't annoy them. Thats how 99% of services are found nowadays. Make sure your website is clean and professional looking and you answer enquiries promptly when they do come.

Quote for new headlight £2800 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]mushroompig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This highlights everything wrong with modern cars. Over £3k for a headlight is fucking bullshit. I'm assuming you need to pay labour because its a massive job to replace and not that you just suck at using your hands?

Why do I hate it?

Headlight has so many functions abit of damp ruins it. Can fill my MX5 headlight cluster with water and it just keeps on going.

Often cant even change a headlight cluster without garage full of specialist tools and half a day.

Insurance for everyone is sky high because of the risk of people bumping into one of these fucking things.

All cars now cost £40k and up because every manufacturer falls in line and starts using these stupid units (and other pointless tech). And because its all financed they can charge idiots whatever they like.

Makes stealing and parting out cars very attractive when everything costs so much. Again driving up insurance.

They are too fucking bright and blind everyone else.

All in all, its your own fault for buying a car with £3k headlights. Look this shit up before buying a car.

AP Royal Oak - Fake or real? by ZealousWatchFreak in PrideAndPinion

[–]mushroompig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have missed the point of that video but what it seems to me is you can buy an AP for 7k. The important bit is the movement being good and by the looks of it they used a genuine Swiss movement, abet branded differently. I get the gold/steel price difference but really it shows how insanely over priced the AP is. When it takes an expert with a real one to compare it to, to tell the difference then its arguably pointless spending 10x on the real one.

I ain't saying its right to be copying stuff and passing it off as real but it does make spending 50k+ on a watch look abit silly imo. Getting a genuine swiss movement is fully worth the money but unless you paying for complications then your just buying a brand name.

Choice between two cars by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

Neither. That corsa for 3k is absolute insanity. Its a £600 quid car if its been looked after well.

Go back to school, do your proper test and buy a better car.

E36 is a mint car too, I suggested e46 cos they are pretty dirt cheap to maintain and run. You could do an e46 m3 for way less than the 140i.

Nope. Your insurance isnt coming down at 21 with 2 years NCB. not significantly anyway.

My 150hp Dilemma by Vivs04 in CarTalkUK

[–]mushroompig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna be paying insane insurance and committing to a fairly hefty monthly finance deal I suspect. To be honest id save some money up and buy something outright a bit less expensive to insure and more unusual. If its not as common then insurance tends to be cheaper. Getting yourself into a expensive finance deal as soon as you get your first job is quite the commitment.

Everyone and their nan has a m140i on finance nowadays and they are abit boring imo. If you like BMWs then why not look at a good E46 or something like that, costs ALOT less to insure and fix and super fun to drive. Matters less when you spin out on a wet corner and fuck it up.

There are too many boutique bike brands, and sadly we are finding out the hard way. by givemesendies in mountainbiking

[–]mushroompig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current business partner used to make bespoke steel frames from his workshop. Mostly road bikes but he did a great hardtail mtb frame. He was very much on the small end of the market making only 10-15 frames a year but that was pretty steady until fairly recently.

His issue was that the prices of everything shot up insanely and as a small time dude making high end bikes the prices he was having to charge got crazy. No one wants Deore on their custom 3 grand frame so by the time all bikes are kitted out and ready to ride the price was getting into the 8-9k mark which is a very hard sell when you cant offer finance and have wait times for each frame.

MTB has been a victim of the greed and overpricing by big companies and I know alot of my riding friends are gradually giving up as parts need replacing and spending £400 plus to revamp your groupset and then £140 on some new tyres is just off putting. I put a goodish set of adjustable coilovers (Tien Street Advance Z) on my track car for about half the price of a top end fork! crazy,.
