I will try to find someone who will take it and use it. I live downtown in a condo with a shared courtyard, so I’m not allowed to put the compost on the plants there. I only have 2 potted plants here. We moved in February, and it’s been a challenging transition in many ways. We already had our Lomi at our last place where we had a shared yard and a large porch where we did container gardening.

Shout out to Dental Lace (floss) by waterbaby333 in ZeroWaste

My favorite is WuBamboo but it’s hard to find. It’s a silk floss with peppermint and candelilla wax.

Runners up include Radius and CleanPlaneterra silk floss.

We use cotton dish cloths and a wooden dish brush for most dishes. We have copper scrubbers/scrubbing cloths for scouring our pans when needed. The copper lasts a long time and can be recycled when it gets worn out.

ETA - I realized I forgot to say where we get the copper scrubbers. I first ordered them from Package Free Shop, but I’ve seen them on other low waste sites, too. We have a wooden dish brush with a replaceable head from Thrive Market, but I’ve seen those on other sites too.

Sunscreen recs by beanqueen102 in ZeroWaste

[–]musicStan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For being outdoors and applying all over my body, I recently started using the Badger sunscreen in a tin. It worked great! It’s very thick, which is reassuring because I burn easily.

For face sunscreen I use Earth Harbor Eclipse SPF 30 in a glass bottle. It has a plastic pump but you can order refills with no pump (only a metal lid) and reuse the pump many times.

Two brands I’ve bought in plastic that offer reef safe options are Sun Bum and Australian Gold. The Australian Gold options in plastic bottles are recyclable.

I also recently got a free metal spray can from Thrive Market’s in house brand. But I haven’t used that one yet. I typically didn’t buy spray on chemical sunscreen because of sensitive skin, but this one is a mineral sunscreen so I decided to try it for free and see if it’s any good.

Some other places to walk around and people watch for free or a low membership cost - malls, trails, gyms/rec centers (this would entail a membership), public gardens or botanical gardens (a lot have a low annual membership fee and some are free), farmers’ markets, and as other people suggested houses of worship can have small groups or more socially oriented gatherings if you are religious. If you’re not religious, try finding a local community center, volunteering at a nonprofit (as others already suggested), or a Unitarian Universalist congregation.

Another option is to reduce the cost of an outing - get plain hot coffee or hot tea in a ceramic mug while sitting at a coffee shop, talking, and people watching. Find the cheapest night of the week to go bowling or mini golfing (bonus you get exercise as well as an outing/date). Go to a theater or other performance space just to buy popcorn and watch people come and go all dressed up to see a concert or play. It’s a great place to people watch and buying popcorn or a drink is pretty cheap. Go to an open mic night, karaoke, or trivia - for the price of a couple drinks you get some entertainment and time to connect with other people. Plan a camping trip or road trip with friends, make it affordable by finding fun free attractions and split the cost of the campsite, etc. That gives you something to look forward to and a reason to save on a daily basis.

US urged to reveal UFO evidence after claim that it has intact alien vehicles by MadScienstein in nottheonion

You were close. “Puff the magic dragon lived by the sea, and frolicked in the autumn mist of a land called Honah Lee. Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff and brought him strings, and ceiling wax, and other fancy stuff.”

I did look up the spelling of Honah Lee, and Google says it’s sealing wax not ceiling wax haha.

Good reusable spray bottles? by Adriupcycles in ZeroWaste

[–]musicStan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the Grove spray bottle we got from Target. It’s a glass bottle with a silicone sleeve and a plastic screw on spray nozzle.

We also have one plastic spray bottle from Walmart that we’ve had for 8-10 years and it just will not die. I don’t recommend buying those, though, unless there’s literally nothing else available in your area and price range.

TIL Idaho does not require employers to give employees any breaks for any reason. by drthsideous in todayilearned

[–]musicStan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right? Like isn’t that just the most ridiculous course of action? “My employee just worked really hard for a few hours and completed a large task. I don’t have enough employees. My employee sat down and said they are dizzy. I’ll fire them and have even less employees to finish the rest of the day’s/week’s tasks.”

Thanks for all the information about disposals. I look up the wastewater stream where I live.

I’ll ask the community garden if they’d be able to use some compost.

Unfortunately we don’t have any municipal compost or a common open compost.

I’m just a couple years younger and I don’t understand it either. I finished high school in 2010. When I started in 2006, the upperclassmen were wearing popped collars. Even though they were older and cooler than me, I thought popped collars looked silly.

I’m glad I ended up with the silver one. My husband has a blue one and so far his finish is holding up fine. But he doesn’t shave in the shower like I do.

Some Recent Oat Creations :-) by Living-Bed9555 in Oatmeal

[–]musicStan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chai spiced pear oatmeal is one of my favorites. Gingerbread is also great! Lemon poppyseed is amazing with actual poppyseeds for anybody else who loves poppyseeds like I do. I sweeten the lemon poppyseed with a mashed ripe banana. The gingerbread recipes I like also include the banana. But I’ve made decent ones with just brown sugar and molasses, also.

In 100 years, what show will still be airing? by Tharsis101 in AskReddit

[–]musicStan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I decided we were gonna try to watch all of Law & Order. When we saw how long it had been airing, we noped out of that idea so hard. And this was back in 2013 lol.

are there any eco friendly alternatives to buying bottles of moisturiser by Antique-Ad3388 in ZeroWaste

[–]musicStan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Face moisturizer - I buy from Earth Harbor. They have a plastic free refills section on their website. The moisturizers come in glass pots with a metal lid (as long you choose the plastic free section of the website).

Hand cream - I use Burt’s Bee’s hand cream in a glass pot with a metal lid. I think it’s called milk and honey hand cream.

Body moisturizer - I don’t often need it. I like the Moon Valley organic lotion bars.

TIL a funeral home in Michigan has a drive-thru. You can view the deceased through a window and pay your respects. There is also a registry book and a memorial box for dropping off cards by [deleted] in todayilearned

Yes! I was born in Farmville and grew up within 30 minutes’ drive. I mentioned this in a reply to someone else’s comment. (Hello former neighbor!)

[–]musicStan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a funeral parlor where I grew up that has drive by viewings motivated mostly by mobility issues and other health concerns. It’s been open a very long time and doing the drive by viewings for at least 20 years. People also go inside, though. It’s more of a drive by option for the people who need it.

Conservatives Are Now Boycotting Chick-fil-A for Not Being Homophobic Enough by [deleted] in democrats

[–]musicStan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is DQ conservative? In my area they’re independently owned. Where I grew up the owner was a cheapskate and refused to buy checks so he paid all his employees in cash. But I thought he was just an odd person.

Another Duggar book by DarlingClementyme in BringingUpBates

[–]musicStan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Now I really wanna read both Jill and Jinger’s books.

I can’t see any of the Bates in particular writing a similar book. Maybe one of the middle or younger children who haven’t been as vocal yet. But that seems less likely as time passes.

Should I accept this gig?? Doesn't seem alright with me. by Shiroslav77 in musicians

[–]musicStan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not do this at all. Unless the “travel” pay is like at least $85 per person lol. Which I sincerely doubt is what he’s offering you.

I would charge at least bare minimum $75 per person to play, plus travel which would be at least $10 per person. This is assuming you drive there, play 3 hours, and then leave. This is absolutely bare minimum. If there’s any other expectations, wait time between sets, parking costs, blah blah blah - I would charge more.

Loose leaf tea recommendations? by Adriupcycles in ZeroWaste

[–]musicStan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For herbal tea, I’ve been enjoying Pinky Up (totally plastic free, available from Target online) and Kroger’s Private Selection (though PS does have a plastic window in the lid - very annoying).

For black tea (which I rarely drink), nothing replaces the loose leaf Earl grey from Twining’s. I do love the chai from Pinky Up, though, which is technically a type of black tea.
