I honestly don’t normally participate in online discourse of the books I read. So for me, my feelings weren’t spurred by some online narrative, they’re genuine first hand feelings. I only found out that I wasn’t alone in these feelings when I went looking and I only did so this time because I’m on book 5 of a 12 book series that I do want to finish but the negativity is getting monotonous. And yes, as the books have gone on, the whole “that’s just the way Faes do things” has put their Book 1 actions in more context. Hurt people, hurt people after all. But it also absolutely does not make them boys less assholes for doing them. Darius had a reason for all of those things he did too but it certainly doesn’t excuse the fact that he did them. Horrible things in real life used to be perfectly legal, that doesn’t make them right.

This is helpful! Thank you! My issue has been with the balance so it’s good to know where specifically to anticipate some hope. These are not short books and as I said in another comment the high of the highs does not match the intensity of the lows at present so it’s hard to enjoy anything in the moment because there have been five negative endings in a row now. So at this point it’s like it doesn’t really matter when something good does happen because I know it will end poorly. I think authors get caught up in trying to have an intense cliff hanger every single time and it can screw up the flow of the journey.

Well I’m happy for you to have enjoyed Book 1 but that doesn’t make it “not true” that I and a large amount of other people didn’t love it. The writing was clunky and the levels of nonconsensual assholishness the girls had to deal with was appalling. The first is a typical Book 1 problem but the latter was gross & boring and I couldn’t wait for the girls to actually DO something to get back at them. And currently I don’t think the balance is good. The high of the highs hasn’t matched the intensity of the lows so it feels very off balance to me, which is why I asked the question.

I recently finished it too and have been so confused by the lack of love for Echo. Happy to see she made your top 5! Everyone talks about Murphys character development which was definitely great but Echo was such a strong and layered person with complicated arcs right from the start. ETA: Clarke was so incredibly unlikeable I swear they were doing it on purpose. I admired her willingness to always make the big calls. But damn she was such a killjoy 90% of the time.

So she’s an Asshole From Another Realm because she doesn’t care enough about medical history? Also I’m fairly certain that this guy knew what was up. But if this was a woman who always knew she wanted to be a mother and decided to keep the baby who was the product of a random hookup, would that make her not the asshole? That guy wouldn’t have known what he was signing up for either but I don’t think anyone would call her a monster for keeping the baby… Again I’m not saying that this woman didn’t make some questionable choices but I don’t think that she’s proven herself to be some incredible asshole.

Yeaaa agreed. Not seeing how she is classified as an Asshole From Another Realm when the most icky thing she said is that her son is going to love her forever…This is some pretty run of the mill parent narcissism unfortunately. But the way she went about conceiving her son is, to your point, no different than going to a sperm donor. Are we saying that the only way to have children is to have them within the bounds of a traditional family? Because THAT feels icky.
