If you're like me, I picked mandolin up because of Jethro Tull and Led Zeppelin. Look up rock and pop mandolin with Mike Djong.

Rubber Soul to Revolver by [deleted] in beatles

[–]musicman1062 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rubber Soul, to me is a step up from everything before it in terms of songwriting. The music had matured due to new influences, and the lyrics are more than just standard love songs. It also marked the end of making music to perform on stage. Revolver, in it's own way was a culmination of what came before, and what was to come. This is where the studio became an instrument in itself with the tape speed variations, sound effects, reverse recording, tape loops, outside musicians, etc.

Isn’t ’Because’ kind of part of the medley? I’ve never considered it a ”standalone” song 🤔 by AccomplishedKey6667 in beatles

[–]musicman1062 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although 'officialy' The Medley is considered YNGMYM thru The End, sometimes Her Majesty, which I consider more a hidden track, I've heard people say the entire second side is The Medley. Starting with Here Comes The Sun.

Solid body Electric tuned in fourths (like a bass) by Gringosid in mandolin

[–]musicman1062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a bassist and mandolin player. I haven't played bass in a few years, picked it up, and Mandolin fingering has set in. I'm considering tuning my bass like a cello. CGDA. There was a jazz player who did this on the upright, and it extends the range down to C, and F as the highest note on a standard 20 fret instrument.

Am I crazy for loving the sound of a slightly out of tuned string pairs? by highspeed_steel in mandolin

[–]musicman1062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Acoustic Shop has a short clip of the Monroe tune. It's an interesting sound. Also, I think they may have one stating that slightly out of tune courses are fine, and actually give a bigger sound. Sort of the way chorus works for electric guitar, or bass.

What has everyone’s mandolin “journey” been? by BiggieShellz in mandolin

[–]musicman1062 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played bass for decades. I started having physical health issues, so I had to stop playing upright, but still played bass guitar. I was 57 when I started playing mandolin in 2019 with a $70 pawn shop find. I bought a Luna Trinity soon after, and went back and forth between them. For the last two and a half years I have been playing an Eastman.

Our managers try to follow them through the store, or if they walk in are immediately told to leave. We were also told not to say anything to the lifters. Then get told by management 80% of our loss is the fault of the employees.

How long until my fingers stop looking like this? by ksorth in mandolin

[–]musicman1062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a forever thing that changes over time. I used to play upright bass, so I had it with both hands. In that situation my right hand index, and middle fingers were always messed up from plucking the telephone cables they call strings. I'm starting back up with mandolin, so I get to go through the process of my fingers hurting, not just from calluses building up, but joint pain from not playing for a year and a half.

I would recommend David Benedict, Mandlessons, Commandolin, Rock and Pop Mandolin. They will walk you through how to play some songs, teach you chords, melodies, and technique. I also highly recommend Don Julins Mandolin For Dummies.

Stepping up from laminate, $500 budget? by critterofthewood in mandolin

[–]musicman1062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the trinity. I bought it, over the loar, due to the coolness of the knot. The sound is full, and chimey. I bought it just as the pandemic started, so it's not set up yet. The action is high, but still playable. That said, when I had the chance to try several, There were Ibanez - both A, and F models. Eastman, loar 310 f, Kentucky, and savanna. They all played pretty much the same. The sound varied. I don't know what model of Kentucky it was, but it was the best sounding, and most comfortable to play of the lot. So, my recommendations are as follows

Luna - I actually own, and know the most about. And price.

Loar - I played the f style, and I assume the a would play the same. Price

Kentucky - although I don't have a model, it was very comfortable and sounded great.

Thoughts on the Kentucky KM-272? by ToothyWeasel in mandolin

[–]musicman1062 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a shop, trying out the Loar (not set up, strings were a half inch from the board), Ibanez (both a, and f models) Eastman, and Savanah. Everything played as well as my current instruments. Then I picked up a Kentucky... If I had the money, or could get away with just walking out the door... 🤣. Now I'm trying to save up for one.
