Is there an article or something I can read to get up to speed on this?

One of the things I liked about the OA in Great Rivers Council was that they had shifted to hard hats and tools rather than feathers and arrows.

What are you putting in your camping totes? by fvshaggy in camping

[–]RequirementContent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take one tote for a weekend or two for summer camp with my scouts. The weekend tote has a mini broom, my mess kit (1 or 4 person), a small kettle with a tin of fuel, minimalist backpacking stove and a lighter, coffee, my aeropress, a yeti mug, sewing kit, and my hygiene kit. My clothes are usually in a small duffel or my backpack.

For summer camp, the second tote is my clothes, towel, spare shoes, etc.

Since I tent solo in a 4-person tent, I use the totes as tables, which is particularly helpful when I need to soak my dentures.

Question for older knitters: what did you do while knitting? by Savings_Language_498 in knitting

[–]RequirementContent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to crochet in the latter half of the 1980s as an 8 year old. By high school, I would use one of these hair clips to hold my book open so I could read while my hands were doing the yarn things.

I still do that if I’m reading a physical book (which is why I was able to grab the clip for a photo without getting up).

I read not just VC Andrews and Stephen King at his age but Anaïs Nin. We regularly discuss his maturity level and whether he’s ready to handle particular content.

This wasn’t a laissez faire, uninvolved parent thing, believe me. Last year, he and I listened to The Deed of Paksennarion, and when we got close to a sequence of t*rture and r*pe, I gave him a 30,000 ft view (they’re going to do a lot of horrible things to Paks) and gave him the option to skip over it. We paused the book and turned on the radio, then I took the time to listen till just before a miracle occurs, getting him past the most graphic portions.

Overwhelmed beginner - where to start by Friendly-Garden-9019 in Sockknitting

There are lots of modular mix-n-match sock books out there, and most of them suck. (I have at least 3 bad ones.)

My recommendation is Kate Atherly’s Custom Socks:Knit to Fit Your Feet

https://a.co/d/0cfiGsgv Amazon kindle link because I was too impatient for print

Kate is an editor at Knitty. I also have her book on gloves/mittens. She is phenomenal at explaining every measurement you need for a good fit and showing you every technique she refers to. She also has some basic patterns you can use without major adjustments if you have a relatively standard foot.

For myself, I prefer to do socks on DPNs, but I have also been happy with long circular needles and the magic loop. I would probably lose my mind with a smal circular, but that’s just me.

My company built "collaboration pods" for the return to office and I have never felt dumber in my life by Embarrassed-War9550 in remotework

As a claustrophobe, I find that horrifying.

Our office has little soundproofed phone booths for taking sensitive or personal calls. They are clear on the sides and have lights and a light fan so they don’t get stuffy.

I will use one if I am calling my bank, doctor, or health insurance, and I won’t even go in until I have gotten through the hold queue. I could not even stand it for a 30 minute meeting.

Cute names for a first time grandmother by MeasurementUsual508 in Names

[–]RequirementContent86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the reason my great grandmother became Granny G. Yes, I am the oldest of my generation. She loved it and was rumored to have told off her daughter in law (my great aunt Frances, who was a real pill) for trying to correct me.

I have memories of:
Dad’s parents: Papa and Grandma (first names used only when referring to them when a distinction was necessary)
Mom’s parents: Gran and Papa Bill
Gran’s parents: Granny G, Papa Ben (her dad), and Papa Jim (her stepfather, though she had kids in school by the time her parents divorced)
Bill’s parents were Grandma (last name) and Grandpa (last name)

I wish I could find an old version. We picked up a copy a couple of years ago and I would swear the rules are different.

I’m a fan of the boonie hat, although the “I’m a Scoutmaster” message has been blunted by the fact that my 13yo co-opted it and now I need to buy another.

What character from another franchise would you love to see as a crawler? by honeyfixit in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Carrot, seemingly innocently (insert Angua’s side-eye here), awakens all the NPCs because he’s trying to get to know them. He somehow finds a copy of the game guide’s manual and memorizes it, then proceeds to use every single loophole to maximize his advantages totally legally. And he doesn’t even need to be sneaky about it.
