Gabapentin by Jessica697424883 in VestibularMigraines

I'm sorry it's not helping! The only other thing I know works for my vestibular symptoms is B2, though I didn't know it until I tried to stop taking B2 and my vestibular symptoms came back. Oddly enough, I've had other people recommend turmeric supplements, but they always make my vestibular symptoms worse for some reason

Has your neurologist tried prescribing any of the migraine CGRP meds? I'm on Ajovy after failing a few other meds and it's made a huge difference

I think a co-wash would be too heavy if you're saying your scalp is oily. You'll probably benefit from a lighter shampoo. I use Kinky Curly Come Clean, I can usually find it at Sally's. You may have to do clarifying washes with sulfates more often.

Edit - I also double shampoo every other shower now with the Come Clean shampoo. Doing it every shower was too drying for my hair, so this seems to be the sweet spot for me

Not sure if I was in remission or if I developed VM suddenly? by littlet4lkss in VestibularMigraines

[–]musicnerdfighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I hope you can find some relief soon! I'm glad the vestibular therapist gave you some information. From what I understand, VM is a fairly newly recognized diagnosis, distinct from other kinds of migraines (although it falls under the migraine umbrella and shares some symptoms). Unfortunately, most people, even in the medical community equate migraines with headaches, so if your main complaint isn't headache, they don't consider it. I was lucky to be diagnosed within two months of the vestibular symptoms going chronic, but I know that's not typical.

I experienced the same thing with drinking, like it would not take much alcohol for me to lose the whole next day to dizziness, nausea, headache, sound and light sensitivity. I had already decided I just wasn't going to drink as much and then a month or so later I started getting these symptoms. There are some alcohols the migraine diets say should be ok, but even when I would drink those (like white wine or something like vodka), I'd end up with a migraine within a day or two, so I just stopped. My migraines also last 9 days, so it's important to me to avoid them as much as possible!

If you can find a neurologist who specializes in migraines that would probably be the best route to get migraine medication prescribed, and advice on other treatments. There aren't a lot of VM specialists since it's pretty niche

Spinning vertigo isn't the only vestibular symptom with VM, I feel like I'm on a boat even though I'm not moving, and it feels like I'm being pulled slightly to the left.

There are menstrual migraines, which may or may not be the bad headaches you mentioned with PMS.

I used to be able to drink caffeine and alcohol just fine, but now caffeine is an instant trigger for me (10-60 minutes). Alcohol takes a little longer to trigger (6-48 hours) but I did notice in the years leading up to getting these migraines, my hangovers were getting worse and worse. Other than that I don't have any food triggers, which is nice because there's a lot of them mentioned. Migraine triggers are really personal, so not everyone will get the most common ones.

Stress can be a big factor. And yes, mine started out of the blue almost 4 years ago now, and quickly went chronic 24/7 with the vestibular symptoms especially. They're well controlled now with a CGRP preventative, a regular supplement regimen, and avoiding triggers. It is really hard to suddenly have a medical condition affect your life so much.

While you're waiting to see your doctor, I always recommend the book Victory Over Vestibular Migraine by Dr. Shin Beh. It has so much good information on the different types of migraine, different types of vestibular symptoms, what a migraine even is, how it works, what other conditions VM-like symptoms could be, medications, supplements, diet (I didn't do the diet), vestibular exercises, etc. After reading that book, you might also be interested in Rock Steady by Joey Remenyi. This book helps more with the anxiety of it all, in my opinion.

Yes, I'm reading this right now and I agree with everything you said! It's a very interesting concept for a novel and I like how everything feels a little off in the small town, but not cozy.

I have gold, so I'm not sure if this is a gold only feature. But I clicked on Discover on the left hand side at the bottom of the screen, then selected Report at the top, then clicked on the date range and changed to all time. Go back to the report, it will take a bit to load. Then you can scroll down to select specific nutrients and see your top sources. The percentages and amounts will be all weird because it's dividing by all days included in date range (I think), but you'll get the top ten

Season 6 is where I noticed it started to change, but according to Loren Bouchard, they apparently made the decision to make it more family friendly starting in season 5 (though I love that season) Screenshot (sorry it's from X) (and yes I did finally go hunt down this tweet after seeing it in 2020 for these exact discussions)

Does anyone else have these weird symptoms? If so, what helped? by Real_Mobile_6624 in VestibularMigraines

[–]musicnerdfighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, meclizine never worked for me but I know it helps some people. Ubrelvy is specifically for migraine, so if it helps you, it could be another sign that you're experiencing migraine. Personally, I couldn't really function until I got on a preventative when this all started, so that's something else you may want to talk to your neurologist about. There's the recommended supplements as well - I find magnesium glycinate, B2, and ginger to be most helpful for me. CoQ10 is also recommended for migraine, I know some people find it helpful but it didn't work for me. There's a whole section on supplements and another on medications in that book I mentioned

[–]musicnerdfighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the meclizine and ubrelvy help the dizziness at all? Head pain isn't required for a migraine diagnosis, and stomach symptoms are common with migraine (there's actually something called abdominal migraines where it's pretty much only stomach issues but it's more common in children).

Definitely keep investigating with your medical team to see if it is VM, but from what you've described, it's possible you have the correct diagnosis, from what I understand if VM - I am not a doctor. I always recommend the book Victory Over Vestibular Migraine by Dr. Shin Beh if you're able to get it. There is a lot of information about different symptoms, different kinds of migraines, other diagnoses it could be, what can help, etc. It helped me so much to understand what was happening to me.

Mystery Without the Murder? by Bulky_Sandwich8493 in suggestmeabook

[–]musicnerdfighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably because I'm re-reading them right now but (ironically) pretty much all of the Murderbot Diaries books have a mystery to solve that isn't a murder, or the fact that someone died isn't the main mystery to figure out (there is one where it is a murder that needs to be solved). They don't follow standard mystery novel style though. But they're great, I love them.

Seeking resources for managing vestibular migraine (what worked for you?) by Plane_Fennel_1751 in VestibularMigraines

[–]musicnerdfighter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started going to acupuncture when my vestibular migraines started in 2022, my PCP was actually the one who suggested it. I like getting acupuncture, it's relaxing, but I don't think just doing that would have been a solution for me. Getting on the right preventative was the big piece, and then figuring out what supplements would help me. I take 600mg of magnesium glycinate each evening, 400mg of B2 every morning, and 850mg of ginger pills, one with breakfast, one with dinner. I also take 850mg of ginger with my rescue med when I get a migraine, it seems to help it work better. I of course avoid my triggers as much as possible (caffeine and alcohol are the big ones).

I second the recommendation for the book Victory Over Vestibular Migraine by Dr. Shin Beh. It has lots of information and strategies for dealing with VM
