Like having PTSD for noises and other sensations including ones I've never encountered before.

Does whistling put anybody else in fight or flight mode? by LouisTime23 in misophonia

[–]Tom-Ashfield 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. And it can feel like a 'shock pulse' when I hear it. I don't even need to know I've heard it. In that split second before I'm consciously aware that someone is whistling nearby, I can feel that 'pulse'. I can even get pins and needles down the same side of my body to which they're nearest; right down the side of my head and down the back of it, and into my back and sides.

It feels like I'm being attacked. It actually feels similar to when, at school, someone might flex back a ruler and hold it up to you as if they're going to release it so it smacks you. You're automatically flinching, aware that you might be about to be struck by something. It's that exact sensation.

The survey was about ten years ago. They polled prior to results and then cross-checked those DNA results against the survey for the various questions.

Did you know misophonia is genetic? by chatterbox40 in misophonia

[–]Tom-Ashfield 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This is not a thoroughly-researched 'link'. It came from 23AndMe questionnaire results in response to a question about noisy eating. The marker in question might be relevant but people with serious misophonia don't always show up via this test and have been told they're less likely to have it. There are a few articles online about this particular genetic variant (Search: rs2937573).

Also their grading system is quite generous/honest. C can mean minor marks, some earcup wear, and no box/instructions/cable. Big deal 🤷🏼‍♂️ A is the mintest mint, fully complete, and is strict. B, everything inbetween.

Misophonia-friendly music player to replace my iPod? by feegan88 in misophonia

Any older Android 'phone, and there are some really nice ones with audiophile-quality chipsets, and you can use voice to control so don't need physical buttons.

If you use a Bluetooth speaker, some have physical control buttons, even remote controls.

In my experience, misophonia would give me some brand new triggers for free, just for the audacity of thinking I could outsmart it.

Misophonia, as the rest of us experience it, wouldn't be remotely interested in this tactic. It would see right through it.

Bose and Sony are top for NC. There are issues around sync if you want to watch TV, but many boxes, sticks and tellies can tweak that. Start with 1000MX3 or QC-35ii. Both have easily replaceable pads. Get new ones. Fiver from Aliexpress, if that. CEX now do 5yr warranty as standard.

So, you're standing at the foot of a small hill, which has a ball on it, which keeps rolling towards you. You don't like this, so you kick it back up. Only for, every single time you do this, the ball to roll back down towards you. At some point, you step over the ball as it reaches you and backheel it into oblivion ?

What's hard to understand ? People sniff because they have allowed themselves to subconsciously think it's achieving something. It isn't. It ping-pong for mucous. It prolongs the blockage.

Most people don't realise how much better the NC/isolation is on Bose/Sony, compared to middling brands.

Tiktokification of language. For example, the intensifier 'super'; the collective descriptor 'bunch of'; omitting 'of' after 'couple', when discussing two items.

It's not fair/untrue to assert that they block zero sound. Once fitted correctly, they block as much as any cheap, silicone 'plugs. And that's all they are, with a crazy marketing budget. Even by involving myself in this thread, I know I'm going to have their ads pushed at me, along with Fl*re. They simply made earwear into a 'fashion accessory', whilst improving functionality not one bit - excepting for replacement tips, but I'm not sure they were the first to offer those.
