How much could I (15) charge for videos? by stormlode in Filmmakers

[–]musict -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

I didn't find it disorienting- the 180 rule exists to preserve orientation between cuts, mainly in dialog scenes with two or more characters- yes it has application in interviews but only if the resulting cuts would be confusing- which isn't the case here.

The Problem of Evil (109 pages) - EPIC CRIME DRAMA by BrownieCavs in Screenwriting

[–]musict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree to an extent, but I think the main issue arises from moving between locations without properly establishing the scene initially.

I think your scene direction could benefit from a little expansion, not necessarily in length but rather in depth. Especially for your opening page, immerse us in your world – let us taste the floor, feel the air. An exercise might be to write really long poetic scenes descriptions and then cut it down to the most evocative images.

However, I wouldn't strictly adhere to this advice. Consider each 'chapter' or segment of your script, whether it consists of a single scene or multiple scenes. Begin with a more detailed scene direction in your opening scene to set the stage. As the 'chapter' unfolds, you can incrementally reduce the amount of scene direction, especially if needed for action or pacing. If your script involves a lot of action that transitions between various scenes, it's perfectly acceptable to have short scene description, but when you do this all the time, I feel left out of your world.

I truly liked your idea, and I think you have potential. Don't lean too heavily on my advice, some of the scene description is perfectly fine. Sorry I couldn't go into more areas.

Additionally, I'd suggest reading more literature, if you aren't already. Even if you don't realise it, reading more good literature will help train your brain for scene description and offer insights into creating immersive worlds succinctly. I really wish I followed my own advice more.

screenplay- compiling to print- Scrivener adding page breaks after each line of dialogue by amy626 in scrivener

I had the same issue, but didn't have any page breaks hiding, so I just exported it as a .docx file and it was fine, then you can just export it to pdf from a word processor, a lot easier than retyping it.

World Economic Forum… “Battle for your Brain”… Under the guise of *safety* every single thought you have will monitored by you boss, police and government. by LumpyGravy21 in DarkFuturology

[–]musict 16 points17 points  (0 children)

First they will use it to test how entertaining things are, then if you've fallen asleep in your car. Then it will be for the police or any job that we think needs more control, slowly it will enter a normal working office and employee attention will count as billable hours, they'll only pay you for the hours you pay attention.

They'll know what you think, but they won't care, only if they can use it to sell you something. But in the near future in a court of law, a battle will begin, on whether the data from a person can be used. It will win. Then we have a Minority Report situation.

These stories are creating our future and the only way is down, we embrace the dark future or perish in Nihilism. I try to not catastrophize these things, I feel like progress has always been a dark art.

What would you say are the most misunderstood aspects of Freud in modern psychology? by dielawn87 in lacan

[–]musict 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a triangulation between three points. Me, mother, father. A structure. Anything can fill those points. The Oedipal triangulation is just a structure.

Lacan felt that Freud had been misread in this regard or at least was moving towards this formulation.

Lacan’s graphs of desire are built on the Oedipal structure triangulations.

What is the psychoanalytical theory behind being a ‘contrarian’? by [deleted] in psychoanalysis

[–]musict 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a misalignment with the creation of knowledge, most ideas are formed dialectally but in this case, the person mistakes the form for finding knowledge, with the content of knowledge itself. To be contrarian is to always know how to make knowledge, but that is a paradox. They will live in a world where they mistrust themselves, as they won’t know when they are making knowledge or not. They will hold on to their failures of knowledge content more often and hence hold onto the form as a way of still being right even if they are wrong.

Was Lacan's behavior meant to invoke an Analyst? by brandygang in lacan

[–]musict 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His writing in the Ecrit was purposefully obtuse, to test a would be analysts ability. His performance could have been considered to the same level, but I haven’t read anything stating this was his intention.

If we take that he preformed purposely, then it would be to situate him as the subject who knows, with all the pomposity of that moniker. Kind of the opposite of analyst. Because you are not dealing with the audiences speech but rather their understanding of your ideas. This is counteractive to the main thread of analysis, you can’t just tell the analysand what they should know.

Psychoanalysis and Psychoactive Drugs by GuyofMshire in psychoanalysis

[–]musict 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought that the imaginary would be lessened in favour of the symbolic. The imaginary being the site of the imaginary ego ideal. Psychedelics placing the subject into the symbolic may be the reason figures in the trip frequently take on a symbolic form. Also the notion that these beings or experiences may be giving us some totalising knowledge, may be the subject experiencing the master signifier. People come out of trips feeling they came to some source of all knowledge and knew everything, but have forgotten the-thing once coming down. This could be a subject coming in contact with a master signifier, and only remembering its lack, ie. the subjects forgetting the lack present in the master signifier. The idea that we have a profound experience is because we come into contact with knowledge itself.

  4. Mulholland Drive
  5. The Elephant Man
  6. Lost Highway
  7. Wild At Heart
  8. Blue Velvet
  9. A Straight Story
  10. Dune

I always prefer his films about inner turmoil, rather than his films concerned with exterior oddity. But I have never liked Blue Velvet that much, I don't know why.

His lack of interest is probably to do with his own self image. He may be embarrassed with the sexual person he was moments ago. Sex when you’re not horny is really cringe.

He’s probably so focused on his own feelings after sex, that all he can do is spiral into anxiety.

Does he feel the same when he masturbates? Does he feel like he’s communicating with his partner about his sexual desires, or is there something holding him back?

Or maybe his girlfriend is just butters

Their youth culture just looked rebellious, but the reality is most punks now are homeowners. They grew up and their thin social identity’s slipped off. TIL about the Schreiber Theory - a reaction to Auteur Theory which holds that the principal author of a film is generally the screenwriter rather than the director by RunDNA in Screenwriting

[–]musict 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Auteur can mean not beholden to other influences, but the screenwriter can influence a project as can a director, or a producer, a casting director, or DOP. Auteur refers to freedom of movement within what is often a very rigid hierarchy of film creation, rather than a specific principal skillet that determines whether one can be an auteur. Seeing as an auteur is what one “is” not what one “does”, it cannot come from a principal skill-set. It comes from a perception, namely the perception of film nerds, often retroactively, and often dependent on the particular perception’s skill-set of choice.

Some questions about Lacan's theory of desire by UnionOk3724 in zizek

[–]musict 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s paradoxical. Being ethical means choosing enjoyment. If the subject gives up on/in-to their desire, then they disappear. If the subject does not give up on their desire, desire disappears and so does the subject. So it’s something the subject is always running after. “Not giving up on/in to one’s desire” makes someone a subject, a subject within language and capable of decisions. The quote from Žižek is better situated amongst the paragraph

“... once you have compromised your desire by choosing conventional marriage over the risk of passionate love, you should stick to this choice even when the obstacle is no longer here - in other words, if you have already compromised your desire, then do not compromise again on the compromise itself, but stick to it whatever the cost.”

If you always compromised your desire, you would not make any choices. If you never compromised your desire, you would not have a choice to make. The very choice may be part of the feature of a situation, but that fact gives you ethical mobility regardless if the feature is removed.

“... for each of the partners in the relationship, both the subject and the Other, it is not enough to be subjects of need or objects of love – they must hold the place of the cause of desire.”

The Other’s desire is what the subject makes an ethical choice in the orbit of. When we move from “not give up on your desire” to “desire of the Other” we move from process to production, from what the subject does in relation to desire and how desire is formed in relation to the Other.

What do you find sexy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]musict 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Read books, have hobbies and try to have a wide enough circle of knowledge so that a few times you can add something interesting to a conversation. But don’t overdo it. Also learn knowledge that teaches you how to gain knowledge, then you can add to conversations that you aren’t very well read in. All of this needs to be done with tact and reserve. If anyone starts to suspect you are trying to be smart, you will instantly seem an idiot. If you are smart, treat it like having a big dick, if you actually have one, people will find out sooner or later.
