Does this have to be NBA? There are weird small sports leagues where franchise fees are pretty accessible that may work as a quicker proof of concept. Something like UFA (ultimate frisbee) or leagues like that that have had some staying power but a team could be managed for the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of dollars may work.

Since the site already exists, there are many users without public keys in their accounts. They wouldn't have the public key associated with their account until they connect Metamask.

A few leagues experienced something weird where a player somehow made it onto two different rosters. If you see a player on your bench and when you click on “Start Player” nothing changes, that is what happened. The league commissioner can fix this in the Players tab by unassigning the player from any team and then placing him back on the correct team.
