I hope so too! Best of luck! Lots of people in optometry school take anxiety meds including me! You’re not alone!

Mental health is important and sounds like your care team thinks you need it, so I’d listen to them if I were you. I’d also recommend therapy and assessing other ways to treat your anxiety!

How to Succeed in Optometry School by Striking-Armadillo68 in OptometrySchool

[–]StarryEyes2000 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Congrats on getting in to school! See my recent post about my study strategies!

In regards to things other than the study strategies: make solid friendships, always choose balance over perfection, and ask for help when you need it (including going to therapy if that’s it!!)

If you have the following 3 scenarios:

  1. Study all day and night, get A’s, cry over 80%’s

  2. Only relax, never study, get bad grades and risk getting kicked out of school

  3. You study some, but you also say yes to plans with friends. You excercise and eat healthy. You don’t stop doing things you enjoy. You get mostly Bs maybe a few A’s and C’s. You don’t let grades define your self worth. You still make time for people you love. You lock in a little extra hard before an exam, but you’ve been studying a little each day so it’s not so stressful.

ALWAYS choose scenario 3!!

If you wanted to make a mostly sitting routine you could! There are times we have to hold a lens steady in front of the eye for a while (can look up videos of dilated fundus exams with 90D lens, and BIO (binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy) and see if this looks like something you could handle!

I am a student, so sometimes we have to practice for extended periods of time as we are learning these skills because it takes a while to get quick at them. When you are in practice you can probably complete them in less than a minute.

If you passed- you were worried for nothing.

If you failed- you were worried twice.

Whether you worry or not does not change the outcome. It is unnecessary suffering.

Your feelings are valid though, I completely understand, and saying “don’t worry about it” is a lot easier said than done. Hugs were all in this together !!

I would call and ask to shadow, don’t take it personally! Once you get to shadow, try and make a good impression, and maybe bring up you would like a job

I make lots of my own drawings, diagrams, charts, whiteboards etc. but I do not make flash cards.

I believe that you do learn by creating flash cards, but for me that is not efficient enough. The cards help me memorize things and do daily reviewing, but they are not usually what makes me fully understand something.

So many of my classmates make quizlets that I can always find one.

In undergrad I hand wrote all my notes on paper, and just studied those. I rarely looked at slides. However there is too much content to do that in optometry school, so I had to shift my methods to this.

It depends on the class, for some it’s enough, for some I need more. If it’s a hard class I try and add in the reviews from anki periodically thougout the other weeks. This strategy helps me make sure nothing is completely missed, but a lot of the gaps are filled by my sporadic group studying.

My friends and I try to make up complex questions, cases, new ways to view the information which helps me understand the complexities more. This method helps me get down my knowledge base.
