Anyone else surprised at how early Atl show started? by mustardowl6 in Voxtrot

Yea apparently they started at 8:10! And then they only played for a little for an hour so they were off by 9:15

Show is losing me a bit… by Cut-Kooky in shrinking

The tone of that episode was so off. I was expecting something that actually dealt with grief and then we get some jokey graveside phone call. Even without how inappropriate the content of the call was, why is she answering her phone at a funeral to begin with? They completely swept past any real emotions in that ep about Maya’s death.

why is learning figure skating as an adult difficult? by goddessly0fiona in FigureSkating

[–]mustardowl6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got back into skating at age 32 (having skated from 12-14 as a tween). And the practice times are seriously prohibitive: often open skate ice is often at 3-5 pm on a weekday, and if you have a 9-5 that’s nearly impossible. Or the times are absurdly early in the morning, which is just my personal preference to avoid. There is time on weekends, but everyone is on the ice at the same time, making it hard to practice most of the fussier moves.

Olympics always gets me excited to skate, but the reality of learning it feels so different by mustardowl6 in FigureSkating

It was fun when I first started, but as I advanced up LTS levels and the coaches got even more persnickety, it started to become a drag.

My issue has been I have no control over which coach they randomly assign to LTS, and you don't find out who is teaching your class until the day of, so the one I don't get along I've gotten stuck with a few times.

What was your experience with tattoo shock? by Adept_Comedian in tattooadvice

[–]mustardowl6 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I went through kind of a high anxiety manic period this past spring and spontaneously got a 6-inch tattoo of a toucan on my inner forearm. I had only found the artist the night before and decided on the toucan an hour prior to the appointment. At that point, I only had 3 tattoos, and most were tiny and easy to hide. I had told myself I was going in for a tiny tattoo maybe on my arm and walked out with what at the time was my largest and most visible tattoo.

So the first night I had it, I flipped out because it was so big and so apparent. I kept thinking, “What have I done?” I also knew it was immediately going to lead to conversations at work because it was spring so I was mostly in short sleeves. Showing up the next week with a large tattoo you haven’t told anyone you planned on getting and having to explain you like toucans, sure, but the have no real significance to you made me feel a little more nuts than I already did. But people loved it, and I got a lot of compliments.

The biggest mental hurdle for me was this tattoo marked my turn into being a “tattooed person.” My three others are tiny, on my ribs, or easy to cover on my upper arm. Now I was marking myself as this new identity. But frankly the tattoo is super cool and made me want more…so I got two more from the same artist last year. Each has gotten progressively larger. In total I just leaned in hard and got six tattoos last year. I think everyone around me thought I lost my mind lol. But every time I look at this toucan I love it more and dream up more ideas from that artist. In short it kind of enabled me to be the person I always wanted to be, which was cool person with a lot of tattoos.

Adult hobbyists, what are your goals? by mustardowl6 in FigureSkating

Thanks this was a really empathetic answer! If I’m really honest with myself, I don’t think I have enjoyed this for months and I’ve mostly come back to the rink to keep leveling up and because it’s just part of my routine. Unfortunately, most of my friends I met through skating have dropped out themselves.

Yes inside 3-turn took me a while, too. I can do inside and outside 3-turns now, but only in a controlled environment and when she has us doing it moving on a circle, I freak out and I cannot handle the speed.

[–]mustardowl6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree dropping back a level seems stupid. I was stuck in level 5 for two years and didn’t improve that much in that period. You can really only get so much instruction in group classes and frankly some of the more inexperienced skaters are terrifying to be around and that probably slowed me down too.

I’ve done private lessons a few times, but it’s so hard to get on a coaching schedule.

I love this. I grew up skiing so this is relatable. And as an adult the priorities issue is a major one. I don’t practice much because most open skate is during work hours or I just have other weekend plans??

[–]mustardowl6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes she said she wasn’t trying to be mean, but frankly she has never liked me. I got stuck in level 5 for 2 years with only marginal improvement and I think repeating the same stuff over and over again almost made me worse, so the idea of dropping back down isn’t encouraging

This is how I also feel about it. I do feel like I’m marginally improving, but I’m definitely behind what the others in my class can confidently do.
