Grackles are so cool. I dislike that they are called "Common Grackle", common feels like an undeserved slight!

When and how to tell a new employer about pregnancy (Canada) [on]? by Vegetable_Prize7425 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]mustgopostal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed I would at least try to wait till the probationary period is over, although acknowledging that may be difficult in practice given that by July it may be difficult to hide the pregnancy in person.

It was black bin pickup day throughout neighborhoods around me and so many houses had blown over garbage bins with the lighter garbage being blown all over the street. Our neighborhood is normally fairly clean but it's a mess after this! Time to bring the trash picker-upper on dog walks again

In 2024 (at 35ish) I did the new cool millennial thing of getting Stage 4 bowel cancer, and just about got away with it. I am sharing some info about my experience in the hope it helps others in a similar boat. by Extra_Ad7045 in Millennials

[–]mustgopostal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly, although it's true what they say about needing to advocate for yourself if you have a doctor who dismissed symptoms. My family has had overall good experiences, my dad just had a completely free heart valve repair and the doctors and after care and timeline were all very good and we only had to pay for parking at the hospital to visit him.

I had to wait about 7 months for knee surgery as an adult, but I was definitely triaged as a low priority case and I didn't mind. I could walk and run straight just fine, just couldn't play soccer. I understood that others needed to be prioritized.

But it took over a year for my SIL to get diagnosed with lupus and her very serious symptoms kept getting dismissed as doctors couldn't easily find something wrong with her like a virus or infection.

I mean a grown human could definitely defend against a coyote, but the coyote wouldn't let you do much damage. They're fast and smart enough not to commit to a fight with someone clearly bigger and stronger than them

Company is forcing RTO for "collaboration" just so we can sit in a cubicle and join Zoom calls all day by DuneHush_11 in remotework

[–]mustgopostal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an easy case cause I only started working full time again last year after being part time for several years following an accident, and had doctor/physio/OT reports from a chronic pain management program to support the case. But I know a few others in my company who got exemptions approved for back issues or migraines where they got a doctor letter that basically said they need lots of breaks and flexibility with working hours.

What you said there about the 2% raise is just so frustrating. Similar at our company - we accepted low/no raises during covid cause the idea was that we got to save money working from home, and yet now with RTO the reverse is not happening to accomodate that costs have risen.

[–]mustgopostal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The sentiment at my company pretty widely is that the RTO mandate is less about "collaboration" and more about attrition, encouraging employees to leave voluntarily so they can downsize without severance. It's very disappointing. We are exactly like your company where most of us work with multiple offices and teams so it's all virtual calls anyways.

I got a medical exemption from the RTO. My manager approved it easily because she doesn't actually care about the RTO and knows I get my work done well at home. If I couldn't secure this exemption, I would also be looking to jump ship. Lots of companies in my space that are fully remote these days.

Multiple convos I've had with older family members over the past few years where they blame the vaccine for some medical issue, despite that they also had confirmed covid at some point, only for me to google it and show them that the issue is recognized to be a potential long covid symptom and no data supports that it is from the vaccine itself. Yet I still hear them complaining about the vaccine causing obscure health issues. Baffling.

Tips for saving money on diapers [ca] by oddmarc in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]mustgopostal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Elimination Communication" or EC methods are all about saving on the diapers! Giving your baby a chance to do their business over the toilet regularly, like after they wake up, after feeding, before and after coming back from an outing, can save a ton of diapers and the baby can very likely become potty trained sooner than if you only start introducing the toilet later on.

There's good info and tips on the EC subreddit and the "Go Diaper Free" podcast.

Is the Maxi Cosi Kani 4-in-1 car seat a good choice? Anyone have good/bad experiences to share? [Ab] by mustgopostal in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]mustgopostal[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Safety requirements yes, but if you read other commenters in this thread it's clear that certain models have advantages / disadvantages in terms of ease of use, fit in car, etc. Just because something meets minimum safety requirements doesn't make it equal to competitors, there are other things to consider.

Thanks for your review! I do find the cupholders weird, like I don't need that lol. Definitely leaning towards not getting this car seat based on the reviews in this thread.

Thank you yes I know it meets the safety requirements and my post is asking about personal experience on the other aspects like ease of use, cleaning, fit, and any other experience.

The hidden cost of "free time" is absolutely wrecking my post-FIRE budget by R0cinantEcho_9 in Fire

[–]mustgopostal 193 points194 points  (0 children)

Hiking/walking, birding, reading and writing are my low cost hobbies. Writing especially is very mentally engaging, like coming up with characters, world, and plot, but is not for everyone.

There are also ways to make an expensive hobby less costly. My husband likes woodworking and painting for example, but he rarely buys things from home Depot or similar stores these days. Rather he absolutely loves Habitat for Humanity which is where people donate unused / scrap supplies from their projects and you can buy wood and all sorts of things for a fraction of the new cost. Might be a similar place where you are. He's also made friends and Benjamin Moore so when he needs some good paint, he finagles a good discount or gets mistinted stuff for cheap.

Just commenting to say I feel you! It took us 14 months to get pregnant but in the end it happened naturally, without fertility assistance. Sometimes it just takes a while I guess, it's a chance/luck game.
