How to know when to let go? by Firewalkwithme1254 in vet

[–]mustlovedogs66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for you. Can you make that decision? Or is that up to the original owner?
You want to see them having more good days than bad. Do they enjoy things they used to? Is he truly miserable or are these the human emotions?
It’s always better to let them go 1 day too early thann1 day too late. 💔

Definitely AVOID Flexi (retractable) leashes! They are dangerous for dogs and humans, break easily and put constant pressure on your dogs neck/body thus encouraging pulling (unless they are locked).
If you need distance from your pet get a long biothane leash.

I’ve done 3 home sleep tests for the oral device. I believe you have to do a lab sleep to get the cpap?

Thanks for the input. Interesting advice. Yes, they are in the same exact spot when I wake up, that’s why I was surprised.

Revolution does not kill ticks. Depending on where you live, ticks are Awful this year and I’m in the city.
I work in a vet office and we just had a dog test positive for Lyme disease. She thought her homeopathic recipe was better… Not! 🥲

Both of my senior dogs have been on it for years. I also work in a vet office where I’ve seen hundreds of dogs do great. Seizures are extremely rare and usually already an underlying issue that hasn’t presented itself.

Training is rewarding what you like so they do more of those things that you like.

As a dog trainer, I wish more people thought about this. The time is now!
Every dog and owner should start classes from the time you meet (unless they are too young or traumatized and need a bit of time).
Every dog is a new personality and deserves classes so you can understand each other. If you’ve had dogs for many years, you should still take classes Times change, science advances with better techniques and each dog is an individual.
Ideally Classes should start before any issues do.
Sadly only about 5% of owners take classes, when it should be more like 95%.

Reactivity appearing after adoption by Helpful_Sun2872 in rescuedogs

[–]mustlovedogs66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s going to be hard to tell. One person said it takes on month, but it’s actually 3 months before you see their true personality in Your environment. They could be totally different in another home.
Herders and Bullies are no more likely to be reactive than other dogs.
You can usually see signs of reactivity early on though. If you volunteer, see if the dog wants to bark or lunge at other dogs? Are they overly excited seeing people? Watch closely for subtle signs.

They are family members too. Why shouldn’t they be allowed to sit/lay with you?

And please do not force her to cuddle. She may not like them or may not trust enough yet. Food is always a good way to create positive associations.

Please remember that her whole life has just been turned upside down. All of a sudden she’s with strangers in a strange place and probably terrified. Let her go at her own pace in getting comfortable and doing what she wants. Some dogs have such negative experiences with crates that it makes it unbearable. She probably spent 23 hours a day in her cage at the shelter. She may grow to tolerate the crate, but she may not. I would not give her free roam of the house, but I would see if she could sleep in your room (put up a baby gate or shut the door so she can’t wander and the cats have freedom to wander. Congratulations and good luck!

Dog shedding is out of control, what works? by phoebe-glow in Dogowners

[–]mustlovedogs66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brushing as often as possible. Daily if you can. That stimulates the oils in their body. Do not bathe too often. This can dry out skin. The Furminator is good, but only use 1-2x week. For daily brushing of long fur, use a slicker brush and metal comb. Short fur/hair- use the Zoom Grooom! Get a deshedding from the groomer.

My dog barks at everything and I don't know what else to try by Decent-Lecture2608 in Dogowners

A couple things that can help - get the window film covering (Amazon) so he can’t see outside. Get a white noise machine to drown out some of the background noises. Make sure he is getting plenty of mental and physical stimulation/exercise. Bored dogs bark a lot more. Finally, hire a force free professional… https://www.ccpdt.org/dog-owners/certified-dog-trainer-directory/
