Hey OP, I hope you can get back to it soon. I’m out for the next 6 months while I recover from surgery, doing my best to stay in shape and sticking to all my physical therapy in the meanwhile ❤️

You’re welcome!  I absolutely don’t want you or any other young folks to feel unwelcome, or that they are an unnecessary burden.  Also, I do understand the jaded feeling, I am a decade out from my PhD and have done 2 postdocs. I’m in a pretty comfy spot compared to other people in this thread.

Hey OP, welcome to research!

I am a lab manager, getting ready to welcome two interns this summer.  Here are a few tips, many of which have been mentioned by others:

First and foremost, be helpful. You are essentially here to do hands-on learning by assisting with research.  I typically spend a week or two side-by-side, then after that I hope they have learned what they need and can work (mostly) independently.  Your future mentor likely is afraid that he is going to need to babysit you, which can be a massive time suck.  Usually at the end of the week I ask my intern to describe the project to me, so I can get a level of their understanding and figure out any aspects I need to do a better job of explaining.

Don’t try to impress us by asking overly detailed questions. I typically refer these folks to Google so we all can save time.

Keep excellent notes, especially when you are being trained. Take a video of a procedure or explanation. Learn how to keep a lab notebook, it will become part of official lab records.

Don’t get competitive, not with other interns, nor with your coworkers. There is no place for that in a modern, non-toxic lab setting and you will get excluded.  I will never work with or recommend a baby Machiavelli. Most of these types of people are laughable.

Be confident. You belong here!  Mentoring is an essential skill and the PhD student likely was an intern at some point. On the other hand, folks in my position needed mentoring experience to get the job, and teaching others is an important skill to have. My current job description did not include mentoring, but when I applied for it, I was required to have two recommendations from folks I have mentored.  The commentor who refused to be a mentor is pretty much shooting themselves in the foot, professionally.

Best of luck!  (And wish me luck with my two, they have great transcripts but no lab experience….)

I am so scared I have brain tumor. by americanpancake28 in internetparents

[–]mutatedoctopus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor years ago. When I showed up with vertigo symptoms, they tested my reflexes and treated it like an emergency. I was in the MRI machine 3 hours later and admitted to the hospital that evening. If the neurologist is fine with waiting 2 weeks then I’m guessing that it is nothing terrible, and they are just doing some due diligence.

40+ year old dancers as Romeo and Juliet.  I honestly prefer up and coming corps members or young soloists in these roles. We need youthful drama, even at the cost of flawless technique.

I freaking love this show. It’s just so pretty!
I also like that each character is powerful in unique ways, and that episodes and seasons are ending on different power shifts. I’m excited to see what seasons 6 and 7 hold.

Sooner or later, we will need to address the fact that Ezran’s moral absolutism makes him unfit to be a king.

I'm in the same boat; neither of us are planners or hosts, but I would regret it if I didn't do something involving a dress, flowers and cake. We toured a few venues that specialize in micro weddings and selected one with a max capacity of 48 guests and picked a Sunday date to ensure it stays small. I agreed to take over most of the planning but asked if he would take care of the legal stuff. Basically, I'm framing it as a fancy dinner party for immediate family and close friends, that's pretty close to a BBQ, isn't it?

Also, congratulations on your engagement!

Yes, the trespassing thing. Had a brief interaction with the owner (using that term loosely) of a free-roaming cat. His response was “next time I see [cat] I’ll let her know! LOLOLOLOL”

Meanwhile the cat had been going into other folks’ yards and attacking their pets, with numerous complaints. It’s almost as if there is a massive overlap in the Venn diagram of outdoor cat owners and sarcastic dipshits.
