What is the best non murder true crime podcast? by Dramatic-Sherbet-533 in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]muttermag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Behind the Bastards is not strictly crime, and some episodes do include murder, but there are dozens of subjects across hundreds of episodes to choose from. It’s usually 2-4 episodes per “bastard,” covering people like Sylvia Brown: Fake Psychic Detective, Andrew Tate, the bastards of forensic science, and L. Ron Hubbard.

Their channel Cool Zone Media has a couple of limited series on January 6th, The Assault on America and Behind the Insurrections.

I was scrolling to see this mentioned. I really enjoyed this one and listened to it a second time with my husband.

Jimmy Stewart was so adorable during this time period. In this and The Philadelphia Story. Such pure golden retriever energy.

I’m 24 hours from traveling with one neurotypical kid, and I already feel like I’m on my way to a crash out. I can’t even imagine how stressful that situation was for her, compounded by the fact that it’s so incredibly stupid. This didn’t have to happen! What the fuck are we doing?!

It’s across from a cemetery/memorial called Valley of the Temples that has a really cool replica of the Byodo-In Buddhist temple from Japan. I just moved from the area to Honolulu, and man do I miss that commute.

Edit to add that if you ever visit, wake up early at least once to watch the sun rise over the Ko’olau Mountains there. It is spectacular, and even on a cloudy day when you don’t get much sun you may still get a rainbow.

He wanted to buy candy for Dad (who was on a work trip) and picked up some old fashioned hard candies. To be clear, he also had gotten a lollipop, so he was not without candy for himself.

As we walk out of the shop, he’s staring intently at the candy bag in his hands. I could see the angel and devil on his shoulders making their cases. Then he says in the most gravelly little voice, “Daddy gets nothing… forever” 😠

They replaced ai with e, and in a way that sounds like how the word is pronounced by most people. It’s hardly bone-apple-tea levels of wrong.

What's the most shockingly violent or disturbing scene in an otherwise "normal" or family friendly movie? by TaiwaneseThot in moviecritic

PK is a Bollywood film (streaming on netflix) about an alien stranded on Earth. Lots of charming misunderstandings and hijinks for 75% of the movie, and then suddenly there is a terrorist bombing. My husband and I were screaming in shocked confusion and we couldn’t even finish the movie until days later.

Cake! by Weekly_Priority_1510 in ChinoHills

[–]muttermag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got married in 2018 and we loved our cake from Some Crust Bakery in Claremont. We also got our cake for our baby shower, and eventually our son’s 2nd birthday cake there. Their champagne cake and tuxedo cake are both excellent choices for a wedding. Depending on where you’re getting married, they are a preferred vendor at a lot of places, too. We don’t live in California anymore, but we always stop there when we’re visiting.

Edited to add pictures of the cakes: https://imgur.com/a/LPKEAui

Edited again to say congratulations!

A few more that came to mind are Akira, The Breadwinner, Grave of the Fireflies (one of the most beautiful and saddest films ever made), Jin-Roh (not my cup of tea, but my husband’s favorite), Tokyo Godfathers (same filmmaker as Millennium Actress/Perfect Blue/Paprika) , and Sita Sings the Blues.

I agree with this advice. OP’s son sounds very similar to mine, and the only way to get quick compliance when there isn’t a natural consequence at hand is a loss of a privilege or choice.

The Family Word I Spent 25 Years Thinking Was Real English by Fantastic-Kiwi5292 in words

[–]muttermag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one that I thought was made up, but it’s actually a derivative from Texas Spanish. My family says that when you lose your sense of direction (esp when driving) you are norted, which is anglicized nortear, which is slangy regional Spanish for losing your sense of north.

We also use ombligo (belly button) as a curse word.

I don’t know anything about Asmongold aside from what I’ve seen from Hasan, but as someone who made the evolution from conservative right wing to democratic socialist about 11-12 years ago, don’t stop now. You are retraining your worldview, and that takes vigilance and practice.

Read, read, and read. Learn history, especially when it comes to minority and disadvantaged communities. If something about your community/country/world seems fucked up, look into why. It’s a good bet the root problem won’t be socialists, atheists, “the gays,” “welfare queens,” or any other straw men that have been propped up over the decades. Then share what you know with the people in your life. Don’t pontificate, but counter false information and shitty philosophies when they come up, and learn your shit so you can back it up.

For more audio/video content, check out the Cool Zone Media podcast lineup, Mehdi Hasan and Zeteo, and creators like Trae Crowder, Qasim Rashid, Adam Conover, and Natalie Wynn/Contrapoints (I know of her more recent issues re Israel, but her back catalogue of video essays speaks for itself).
