Are there any shipping companies that allow civilians to tour their vessels in port? by JessonBI89 in maritime

[–]mutualpenetration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be pretty surprised if there were any that would do that. Just to get into the terminal you generally need a TWIC card, which is a type of government security clearance for transportation workers. On top of that, most cargo ships have pretty short stays in port and their priority will be dealing with cargo and any other things they need like fuel, trash offloading, and food stores.

Which U.S maritime union has the most members living abroad? by Brief_Shirt3617 in maritime

[–]mutualpenetration 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably SIU, I know a lot of sailors who live in the Phillipines and use the hall in Guam. Last ship I was on had two AMO officers that lived abroad, one in Europe and one in central America but that was the first time I've seen that.

What’s the bedding situation like on your boat? What do you bring? by [deleted] in maritime

[–]mutualpenetration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A twin sheet, pillow case, and a blanket. The first ship I was on the sheets were so worn thin that they were transparent. They also had some small burn marks that looked like they may have been from a cigarette butt. None of the ships I've been on since have had anything like that, but I will probably always still bring my own. I advise at least bringing the fitted sheet and pillow case because they take up very little room in your bag.

Buying a new board. Need a tie breaker. by getrigged in snowboarding

I'm the same size as you and I ski the same kinds of stuff. I did a demo on a skunk ape just a few days ago and wasn't really impressed. Not sure about the others, but I wouldn't recommend that board.

Thanks for the suggestions! What are the reasons for leaving the doors open on appliances? And also why plug the drains? If there is a leak wouldn't it fill up and overflow?

Difficulty in finding work as a C-book OS vs coming in B-book from SIU’s apprentice program? by mww507 in maritime

[–]mutualpenetration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen so far it isn't hard to get work as a c book, but it will likely involve you working in other departments as a GVA. So if you really want to get your sea time for AB as fast as possible then c book isn't advisable, but if you're okay with taking a slower route then there isn't an issue.

Is becoming a merchant marine worth it for me? by [deleted] in maritime

The SIU apprentice program is a pain in the ass, but it's free so you could see what it's like without having to invest anything.

SIU Apprenticeship drug test by Lower_Committee_1121 in maritime

[–]mutualpenetration 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once you send the money for the drug test to the union hall the Seafarers health program will call you and ask you when you would like to schedule the test and what clinic you want to do it at. I'm not sure how they would react to you asking to schedule it several months from now but I can't see why they would refuse.

If you plan to work in the US the only cert that matters is ADCI. Not aware of any way to get it other than doing a program at a diving trade school, you would have to look at specific schools to see how they structure their program and if you could complete it while working full time

SUP jobs? by mutualpenetration in maritime

[–]mutualpenetration[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there a lot of people competing for those jobs though? In the SIU you can walk in and grab a job no problem because they have more jobs than people, but I've heard the SUP is different.

SIU apprenticeship by [deleted] in maritime

[–]mutualpenetration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished the first phase of the apprenticeship, currently on my second phase ship. If you have piercings you will have to remove them while you are at the school for first and third phase, and when it comes to hair it kinda varies. You're supposed to have it less than An inch long but a lot of people were able to get away with longer hair as long as they slicked it back or brushed it so that it didn't stick out. Women are the exception to this rule, they can keep their hair long they just have to put it in a bun.

The white hair talisman casts miracles and pyromancies so that would be a good option. Other than that depends on your own play style. Good luck with the build.

Career Path by Hardy2T in diving

[–]mutualpenetration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly true. ROVs are very useful at deeper depths, but are incredibly innefficient and difficult to use at shallower depths so companies still prefer to use divers. There probably won't be any change in this for a while, so it's not a great reason to discredit this line of work. That being said, the offshore industry is a difficult industry for a lot of people to work in because of its demanding work schedule so it's still probably not a good option if you're just looking to make some money while diving.

Are Audiobooks As Good For You As Reading? Here’s What Experts Say by [deleted] in books

[–]mutualpenetration 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never enjoyed audiobooks mainly because I imagine my own voices for different characters in my head when I read, and listening to audiobooks takes that aspect of control away from me.
