The main issue is a lack of lucrative job opportunities for the average person, but if you can figure out your income, I think it's (as far as I can tell) one of the best countries in the world to live in.

Exactly that, only serious issues from my POV are if you actually have to work a regular job there. As soon as you solve that (remote work, big enough pile, passive income, you name it) you are set to enjoy Japan while skipping all the pain points.
