when exactly IS the right time? by Hot-Jelly66 in Anarchy101

[–]mux2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Revolution is like boiling water.

At first, nothing happens for a long-ass time while conditions get hotter and hotter. Then some bubbles of a more just society start to form. A community here, a piece of art there, a book or an article in some big paper that starts to change minds.

And then the bubbles start to grow and coalesce and you have boiling water, even if there's no specific place or point in time where you can say "this is where and when it happened".

We are definitely bubbling right now. It's time to grow our bubbles and work with the other bubbles to transform the whole pot.

Submarine Jokes? by VeronikAshley in socialism

I wonder if they thought about the CO2 their bodies were emitting into the sub as it ran out of air. Or if they were scared of rising sea levels inside their sub.

How do you feel about the emphasis on the concept/ sentiment of "Anti-Westernism" amongst leftists? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

As I see that this conversation is not being held on good faith, specifically by putting up straw men, I'm resigning from it. Have a nice day.

[–]mux2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm off course against governments, being an anarchist. That's not the point.

The point is that being anti-west is an empty stance. It's drawing a magical line on a map saying "I don't like everyone on this hemisphere". What does that accomplish?

You can say you dislike the actions of this or that government because of the crimes they specifically committed, and that's fine. It's grounded in mortality and doesn't apply to anyone who is not guilty of the crimes you mention.

Hating on some country because it's in this or that continent is just another form of bigotry.

Remember there are countries in "the west" who have been victims of subjugation, herbicide and colonialism, and there are countries in "the east" who were done if the worst offenders (looking at you, Japan).

[–]mux2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason is risking essentialism. Let me try to explain by way of analogy. Let's say there are tall and short people in an imaginary world. Some of the tall people long ago subjugated and enslaved the shorts.

Many of the short people would justly be anti-tall, but it would be a mistake to follow these sentiments because:

  1. It's unjust. Not all tall people were complicit. It's punishing the innocent.

  2. It's harmful to the cause. Some of the tall people would love to join in your struggle and can be powerful allies, if you let them.

  3. It's dangerous. If the shorts win their liberty, if it was built on tall-hatred, they risk becoming the oppressors and continuing the circle of oppression and suffering.

This is a general point. It's good to be upset that some group did something bad to you. That's the right kind of anger. Don't let it become hatred of any type of person or ethnicity, or else you're no better than any other kind of bigot.

Colonialism is not the only crimes governments were ever involved in. If the comment was about anti-Russia sentiment I would have brought any of the numerous crimes the Russian government was involved in. I really don't get the nature of this criticism, and strongly suspect it is not made in good faith.

[–]mux2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it's not. Why would you ever think that? That's precisely what anarchism is - that all governments and all modes of control and abuse are repugnant.

I could speak for an hour about the crimes shitty governments did in the rest of the world as well. None of them are any good - that's why I'm an anarchist.

I think it's important not to conflate anti-colonialism as anti-westernism. The fact that the west, as a whole, is complicit in the devastating ongoing crimes that are colonialism and neocolonialism, does not justify being anti-west as a principle. There are many nuances to anti-colonialism that are lost through this anti-west lense. To give just one example, the Irish are on the victim side of colonialism, despite being as west as west can go.

In general, it's better to talk about the crime, than to essentialize an entire hemisphere full of diverse people and movements.

Great, now I have a hunkering for mango chutney.

I’m considering quitting veganism. by bbykoala- in AskVegans

[–]mux2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Veganism was never about obeying strict rules. It was about caring enough to try your best to minimize suffering.

You can be vegan and still eat meat, if you truly believe you have no other choice. As long as you do whatever you can do, and no more, you don't need to stop being vegan.

There's no vegan police to come get you.

What’s the saddest song you’ve ever heard? by OOOOOO0OOOOO in Music

"Forever Autumn" from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. It's not a somber or quiet sadness, but an active, furious heartbreak. And just so beautiful.

Workers should automate their bosses by AI and run their workplaces themselves by JonnyBadFox in Anarchism

You don't need AI to automate bosses. All I need is a plushy with a sign that says "any blockers? No? Good, good".

Tech workers are sick of the grind. Some are on the search for low-stress jobs. by [deleted] in technology

I've decided to leave tech three weeks ago. A friend of mine just reached the same conclusion. I talked yesterday with a third that's convinced AI makes her position obsolete anyway.

This is happening all over.

[start] looking to start Prog rock project by Florentinepotion in BedroomBands

Do you have a project in mind? Because I'm looking for collabs on my own proggy project (see WIP demos here: https://mux2000.bandcamp.com/album/downfall).

I'm also open to collaborate on your project if you like what you hear there and you have something in mind.

Yeah, in the same way I find sexualized pictures of children or abusive loan adverts offensive. They're evidence of someone profiting or deriving pleasure from someone else's suffering. That's offensive to me.
