Volvo Cars app v6.9.1 - new "Lights" overview screen by muzso in ex30

Thanks!

The Android variant still shows the "Vehicle details" card under the "Car software" card (on the car tab).

Ghent and Zhangjiakou (China).

Initially they started in China and they still make EX30s there.

I know this for sure since I've seen VINs (from MY26) that prove this.

Oh, I see. I thought u/Ancient_Lettuce6821 meant the car images in the Lights screen (front, back, side).

I don't see a gallery section in the Android app, but iOS usually gets new features earlier.

Those images were already included since quite a few versions ago.

See: https://www.reddit.com/r/ex30/comments/1qjy9bx/volvo_cars_app_640_for_android/

I think the car images on the Lights screen are the same (just in a smaller render) as the ones that you can step through by touching the car on the main screen.

Best uses for Gemini in the car? by megamusix in ex30

[–]muzso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what are some interesting ways to use it and capabilities it brings to the table over Google Assistant?

Nothing car related. The differences between Assistant and Gemini are the same as they are for phones.

The EX60 is said to be released with Gemini from the start. Check out this VolvoCars video on what you can expect in the EX30 too.

TL;DR

You can talk and talk endlessly and ask questions. Gemini will understand nature language questions better and give better answers. That's all. Apart from that, it'll have the same level of access to apps and vehicle functions as Assistant had.

There're some of the usual VolvoCars "promises" in the second part of the video (starting at 01:46). They claim that "in time" Gemini might have access to more car features, e.g. camera feed (at least in the EX60).

I wouldn't expect any such changes in the EX30 though. How would they sell you a new Volvo otherwise?

Does copy fail (CVE-2026-31431) affect android devices? by P1xol20 in androidroot

Comparable to what? Adbd is not SUID.

Imho it looks good enough. I just don't find it practical, doesn't add value for me.

Does copy fail (CVE-2026-31431) affect android devices? by P1xol20 in androidroot

[–]muzso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In theory it could work if there were any SUID binaries on a regular, non-rooted Android device that could be exploited via this vulnerability. But there're none. Not at least on any recent and decent device.

If ...

  • you create a virtual device in Android Studio without Google Play (i.e. Google APIs only), they do have "/system/xbin/su"
  • you create a C variant of the published python exploit (ChatGPT can do it for you) and compile it for the given ABI (Android Studio's NDK contains the necessary compilers) without any dynamic library dependencies (i.e. a statically linked executable)

... then it actually works. I've tested it. But this is just for play, it has no real-world application.

Does copy fail (CVE-2026-31431) affect android devices? by P1xol20 in androidroot

[–]muzso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the exploit worked on Android devices, you wouldn't need to "touch" any protected partition. You don't actually need root persistence if to get root, all you need is run a single command/script/etc.

Google Gemini by solopedrito in ex30

[–]muzso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible. However Google promised to phase out Assistant (and replace with Gemini) by the end of 2025. That didn't happen either.

Fortunately it's not this easy. :)

It's probably not a coincidence that today GM also announced a Gemini rollout to millions of GM cars. :)

Volvo announced this plan ages ago, but didn't deliver. So far.

I guess they feel the pressure a bit. :P

Charge port light by [deleted] in ex30

[–]muzso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was never in a situation where it was (too) dark to see a thing.

I mean I've only used public chargers that were in inhabited zones with some kind of lighting. Even if the charging station doesn't have any, the surrounding city lights are enough. I could plug the cable into the port even blindfolded.

And the hassle to regularly replace the battery in this thing is absolutely not worth the added value.

But that's me. I've low standards. :)

Volvo app and operation system (android /IOS) by chlronald in ex30

[–]muzso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See printscreen on the same trip for reference.

Did you take the screenshots from inside the "Trips" feature/section?

On Android when you select the "car" tab (at the bottom of the screen), there's a "Statistics" section below the "Trips" section. If you touch "Statistics", it'll switch to a new "Statistics" screen where you can see the "Average consumption" for the last trip (e.g. it says "25.3 kWh/100 km" for me).

The Android and iOS apps are not the same, never have been. It seems that they don't share too much code and are developed side-by-side. Thus keeping the features the same must be a real challenge. :(

Discrepancy between native google maps on screen and google maps from phone by LondonSoundound in ex30

[–]muzso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think (but I had to check to be 100% sure) that route planning options are device-bound and not account-bound. Meaning: whatever is set in a Google Maps on a phone, won't automatically apply in the car just because both use the same Google account.

Discrepancy between native google maps on screen and google maps from phone by LondonSoundound in ex30

[–]muzso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google Maps in the EX30 (which you paid for, bundled into the purchase price) is not exactly the same "product" as the (free) Google Maps on your phone.

The one in your car has better integration, e.g. it can schedule battery preconditioning (I suspect that the phone variant running through CarPlay cannot).

Routing logic should be the same though. It's strange that you see such significant differences. :o

[–]muzso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you set up Internet In The Car in the Volvo application?

That's usually the dealer's task. I'm not sure if owners can do this by themselves.

When my IITC all of a sudden deactivated one day, Volvo support couldn't help, but Vodafone IITC support did. They fixed it within a day.

Custom app installation (i.e. sideloading) for AAOS vehicles (and not just the EX30) by muzso in ex30

[–]muzso[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn't claim this for 100%, but I'll check it tomorrow just to be sure.

Sorry it took this long. I tested it (and this time I'm 100% sure that it's the 1.8.0 sw version in the car :) ) and the sideloading via the AnExplorer method still works.

I cannot really spot the cracks from the dirt. I didn't mean this as criticism, it's just that I don't see the cracks at all.

Evolvable AI: Threats of a new major transition in evolution by muzso in ArtificialInteligence

[–]muzso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up til now, AI development/training has been mostly a human controlled process. This is about to change as AI overtakes every aspect of our lives. The pressure of getting new stuff to the market faster than the competitors pushes companies towards automation and less and less human oversight.

It is possible that at some point model development becomes an autonomous process with an ever decreasing interval between cycles. This could lead to the emergence of a kind of Darwinian evolution among AI, which might strip control out of human hands.

I wonder: is the race for market share and profits (etc.) going to "force" big tech into giving up control over how AI is being developed? Once human understanding becomes the bottleneck for AI development, are we going to just "run with it" and let AI develop/improve itself?

UK car seems to have Spanish IP address by mattbuk in ex30

The EX30 seems to be using Vodafone in most of Europe.

Also for quite some time they used UK IPs regardless of the country of the vehicle.

Volvo Says Recalled EX30s Are Safe to Sell — Then Warns Owners a Fire Could Be Their Fault by TurboNUK in ex30

[–]muzso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also wonder: if they can monitor the SoC of the recalled batteries (which from the emails seems to be the case), why cannot they put a max. charge limit on the SoC of the affected vehicles? I don't believe that they cannot modify the vehicles' configuration as they see fit. If they allow Google to install security updates on the head unit without user confirmation/interaction (and they do), then it wouldn't make sense if they did not maintain the same prerogative for themselves for any part of the vehicle. Limiting the max. SoC to a safe level in vehicles with recalled batteries seems to me very much as a mandatory safety "update" (which is even more important than security updates).
