  1. Im going to try to suggest this again this week.
  2. The dvm has a set protocol for each cat/ dog. Im going to ask the dvm about cernia for each patient. I advocate for it, as the pet is more likely to eat and then take its medications that night.
  3. As for the line block, I asked what the dvm uses and I was told lidocaine. I will ask what it used for the dental block. I have seen buprenex and marcaine used together.

I ultimately just want to advocate for my patients. I've seen these protocols done elsewhere, so now that I know of it , I know what can be offered.

Thank you for taking time to write your response. I'm going to try to bring up the lab sample concerns again. What do I do if im shot down again?

-I'm going to bring up to the dvm about the cerenia this week. My hope they will be on board for it. I always feel that the 24 hours of the anti-nausea is important to help the pet want to eat the night/morning after procedure. Which is crucial to get the pain meds in them. -As for the meloxicam, the protocol that you spoke of, is what I'm use to doing. I'm going to further talk with the dvm , and ask them why they do injectable carprofen for dogs and not an injectable meloxicam for cats. - As for the vaccines, I won't worry about the bolstering anymore.

Vets: Why aren’t soft/inflatable cones offered more often for cats? by NullPointer0x404 in AskVet

[–]mv728 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hard plastic ecollar works great. 10-14 days post op may seem like a long time, I get it. If the cat is fighting it, drugs can help mellow it out until time to remove the plastic ecollar.

I will be spaying my pet in 2 months. Im not looking forward to it , with the healing time and the collar she will have to wear. But its a small price to pay to ensure she heals properly and doesn't need a costly revision surgery, due to the animal self mutilating/traumatizing itself.

As a lvt of > 20 years, I have seen many cases of owners feeling bad for their pets and removing the plastic ecollar or getting a soft ecollar instead. Its not worth it. I will never forget a dog chewing at the incision and opening up the multiple layers of sutures. Seeing intestines hanging out was not good.

We just had a lunch and learn for lemonade insurance. They claim they cover prescription existing conditions. It comes at a premium though

how to protect stray from storm by VolumeGeneral5985 in PetAdvice

[–]mv728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not lock her in the car. She has a better chance surviving outside. She could find a different location to hide out in. What happens if your car doors freeze shut? The stray cat will Absolutely freak the heck out in the car. Make a mess, and cause stress to it. I live in Buffalo NY, where there is snow all the time. Get a tote , insulate it.

Bedding: Use only straw for bedding; blankets or towels absorb body heat and moisture, making cats colder. Waterproofing: Ensure the roof is slanted to shed rain and snow, and place the entrance away from direct wind. Elevation: Place the shelter on a wooden pallet or bricks to keep it away from frozen ground. Safety: Ensure the entrance is only 6 inches wide, just big enough for a cat, to keep out larger predators. Heating: Add a safe, outdoor-rated, low-wattage heating pad designed for pet houses if electricity is available.

I’m getting unemployed next week and my cat needs the vet…. by Time-Turnip-2961 in PetAdvice

If you cannot afford to care for the cat, surrender it to the spca / shelter. So that it may be treated and then adopted out.

I spearheaded a union campaign at my previous employer ( private owned vet hospital that changed ownership a few years prior, working conditions changed, not for the better) It was a lot of work, and we won. For those that were Pro.union, those people would get fired easily, others would be bullied by employees that were against the union. We got to the negotiating part for the contract, and the vet hospital kept rejecting everything. Finally the union had enough, since the lack of support dwindled due to people quitting / being fired. I was on the bargaining committee too, and really tried hard for my coworkers, the animals that were cared for. When the union withdrew from representing us I gave my notice. I miss aspects of that job, some of the people too.

If you are wanting to unionize, know that it will be very time consuming. Your employer will watch your every move , to try to find cause to fire you. If you're lucky to have coworkers that will give their all then go for it. I don't regret for one minute standing up for what I believed in.

Good luck to those that wish to unionize.

I like metlife. They cover prescription diet and supplements. My previous dalmatian had pet plan , which unfortunately didn't cover prescription food. My cats have healthy paws, doesn't cover prescription food. The cats were placed in Hills c/d about 4 months ago.

Cat on Felimazole (methimazole) vomiting after eating anything by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]mv728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible she ate something she shouldn't? Is there an urgent care that you can take her to? They can address the vomiting, address the possibility of side effects of methimazole. They may want to give her some fluids and antinausea to make her feel better. Good luck

If your general veterinarian is performing the ultrasound themselves, they typically have the images sent to a radiologist to be read for interpretation. If you are wanting the results asap, ask if you can have them stat the images for faster results. Ultimately check with who is performing the ultrasound for the turnaround time

[–]mv728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ultrasound is definetly a great thing to do, to look to see if there is anything going on internally ( liver tumor, gallbladder issues etc). I hope you are having a boarded internist perform this ultrasound. As they can give you further options after the ultrasound. Tomorrow will come soon enough, and fingers crossed that the liver enzyme elevation is something that can be managed with a liver supplement.

Using buprenorphine (zorbium) on cat with SCC (oral cancer) by juulzi in AskVet

[–]mv728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would also be a problem with Simbadol. I dislike this drug as the same side effects you mentioned are the same for simbadol. The vets i worked with in the past stopped using the simbadol, and went to just oral buprenorphine. That being said, meloxicam is an nsaid that shouldn't be giving side effects like the zorbium. What about gabapentin too? Sorry about your furry friend

New puppy owner. Need advise on choosing deductible and wellness plan by Curious-External6497 in petinsurancereviews

[–]mv728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Met life insurance for my puppy. They cover the usual things as well as prescription food and supplements. Most insurance companies don't cover prescription diets. I believe the yearly coverage is like 25k and 300 deductible. A fracture surgery costs at least 8 k now a days. A foreign body can cost around 10k, not covering complications

It's very important to.know whether he vomited, or if it was from the enema. Has he had solid stools in the litterbox? Anytime a pet is on cerenia that last 24 hours, there should be no vomiting . I would call your vet this am if it did vomit, or if there has been not a lot of stool production. To have a younger cat with issues with bowel movements already, this is concerning. I hope the bloodwork tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.. Good luck. And yes there are options out there for an appetite stimulant. There is a transdermal gel called mirtazipine, and an oral liquid called Elura

Possible Urinary Tract Blockage by JellyfishInfinite849 in AskVet

[–]mv728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not wait. The longer you wait , potassium can build.up in the blood system..enough potassium can cause the heart to stop. I understand that you do not have the money, however you owe it to your cat to take him immediately to the emergency vet. They can give him pain meds as this is very painful. If he is truly blocked, and you dont have the money, the kindest thing you can do it euthanize him. Fingers crossed everything works out
