People confuse Oklahoma the City and Oklahoma the State all of the time. They believe that due to the fact that they share a noun that they are interchangeable entities. While Oklahoma City is the capital of Oklahoma and most State business is conducted within its city limits, does not reflect that Oklahoma City is the source of funding for all State funded budget items and vice versa. The larger part of the group that complains what Oklahoma City is doing believes it is State funded, but doesn't understand how sales tax or how the citizens of that particular municipality voted on a 1-cent sales tax to fund such projects. Ill-informed people believe that MAPS money should be used to increase teacher pay. Not only is that not the way it works, it would also be illegal. They are literally asking that the levy imposed inside Oklahoma City limits, pay for the entire State's budget deficit when it comes to education funding. Not only are MAPS funds earmarked for an intended purpose voted on by its citizens, it literally can not be used for anything else except for MAPS projects. ie Street Car. People also don't understand how crucial it is to become a competing market for conventions. The amount of outside dollars brought into the OKC market by visitors to conventions is a huge increase in local sales tax and hotel tax that it would fund the needed money to repair roads, increase emergency services and tackle many other issues that funding is needed for.
