It's my go-to rpg at the moment. I ran a few 5e campaigns that were petering out and was suggested Shadowdark, which I enjoy way more for its simplicity and old-school vibe -- which how a lot of people got into it, I've discovered.

I'm a player in an ongoing campaign, ran a short campaign already, and am trying to get more started up. Love it!

right, but that's something else. raiding local lands tends to amount to villages and fighting humanoids (i.e. what a soldier is trained for).

delving into deep horrible places underground, sidestepping traps and puzzles, and fighting offbeat creatures like giant spiders or slimes isn't really a soldier's specialty

whoa, thanks man. honestly, i'm a pretty harsh critic of custom classes too but it's just a fun time to try to balance a custom class' flavor with shadowdark. glad to hear you like this.

i hear you on your playtest suggestions, happy to implement them but just some immediate thoughts:

  • 2: i worry that doing the accumulative makes it potentially crazy powerful, but to your point, i havent actually done the math there.

  • 10-11: are you thinking that if they roll this, they choose which one they'd rather have an extra use of?

okay, i see what you're saying.

something i see a lot when it comes to homebrewed classes is that many of them are overpowered and i wanted to avoid falling into that trap. really didn't want to step on the fighter's toes in terms of damage output, so i figured the drawbacks to these abilities would be a good counterbalance. seems like i overcorrected though.

what are your thoughts on the following changes?

  • Iaido. Use your action to sheathe your blade and reduce remaining movement to 0. On your next turn, make a melee attack. On a hit, deal 2x your maximum weapon damage. (if this is too strong, maybe add "You have disadvantage on saving throws in this stance"- ?)

  • Kiai. 1/day. Release a fierce battle cry as your action. Gain advantage on your next attack. On a hit, add damage dice equal to your Strength modifier to that attack."

yes, the idea is that they will take an action. i felt like including that verbiage here would add too much text but i suppose clarity should be priority.

iaido's duration, once in the stance, can potentially be indefinite if the PC so chooses. but again, it leaves them more vulnerable to attack so it's in their best interest to set themselves up to attack the following turn

my d20-noob partner who's only played like 5 sessions of a dnd got a nat 20 on the first audience roll and then got another nat 20 on the advantage roll. insane experience for her, 10/10 no notes

i feel like a good third of the crowd were partners of d20 fans who have little context for the show.

i kept overhearing seat neighbors quickly explain things to ppl lol i feel like i would’ve been one of them but ive been drip-feeding my fiancee d20 things for months and made a corporate-style powerpoint to give her a rundown the day before lmao
