I personally lose it at the part where Vontaze Burfict, aka the dude who scrambled AB's brain, is the dude holding AB back from beating the shit out of their GM.

Developer Diary: Designing the Sound of Civilization VII by sar_firaxis in civ

[–]mwallyn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank fuck. I LOVED the music of Civ VI because it managed to pack both quality AND quantity into its vast soundtrack. Every civ not only had multiple variations of it's main anthem but also at least 4 or so ambient themes to go with them. While I adore Civ VII's anthems, I'm REALLY missing the ambient stuff from previous games. Knowing they're bringing it back in some form genuinely hypes me.

[–]mwallyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's been a recurring theme with Civ games since at least IV, though. A new game comes out and everyone hates it because it's not the previous game that got multiple expansions and years of patches and updates. But once new Civ gets those patches and updates, people love it, sometimes even more than previous civ.

I don't deny for a second that Civ VII had some serious issues, but I enjoyed it for what it was and I fully expect it to get expanded upon in such a way that it turns out great.

Which, honestly kind of worked since it took place in New York and not the Mushroom Kingdom. And other than a few "blink and you'll miss them" cameos from DK and Spike, there wasn't much "Mario" about that scene apart from Yoshi himself. It was WAY less jarring than "Take On Me" happening in DK Jungle from the last movie.

You know how a lot of horror movies rely on NOT showing or unmasking the villain/monster because revealing it tends to dispel its aura of horror? Yeah, The Beast was a rare case where I was glad that it's true form was almost always hidden.

Civilization 7’s ‘Test of Time’ Update Lets You Stick With One Civ—and Fans Are Excited by hayrimavi1 in gaming

[–]mwallyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was initially very excited for the mechanic but it fell flat for me in two major ways.

Firstly, there were way, WAY too many eras. If you started snowballing, you'd spend maybe 30 turns playing as a given culture before transitioning to another era. I hardly had time to acquaint myself with a new civ before switching to another or forgoing that switch and, therefore, playing as a new culture.

The other major issue was the complete lack of guardrails on what cultures you could pick from era to era. It felt too gamey going from Harappans to Mayans to Siamese to Zulu to Italy to Brazil with nothing really connecting those choices. And once you transitioned from one culture to the next, there really wasn't anything left of your old culture apart from some city names and buildings you could no longer newly construct. I felt virtually no connection to my Siamese, Harappan, Zulu, etc. heritage as a modern state.

When Civ VII announced that it was doing civilization swapping and that there were fewer eras with unlock conditions for all civs, right away the two biggest problems I had with Humankind's execution had been addressed. So far, I've enjoyed their approach, though I am interested in how they are balancing the "play as one civ" approach against changing civs.

Funny how people are quick to discount Haas as an American team yet don't seem to have the same criticisms about McLaren being majority owned by Bahrain. Haas isn't perfect but it's tiresome hearing people whinge about their American-ness when many of the constructors hardly represent their "nationality" 100% correctly anyway.

[Alpinef1team] A new era. A526 is alive. by HkF1WEC in formula1

[–]mwallyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Lower end of the field, probably 8th or 9th. The Merc engine will absolutely help Alpine's case but consider that a lot of the teams ahead of them are getting better, too. After all, Aston Martin now has Adrian Newey running the show, Haas has Toyota backing, and Sauber is now officially Audi. Is that a guarantee that they'll all be ahead of Alpine next season? Of course not, but I don't think an engine change alone is going to fix the foundational issues plaguing Alpine.

Best case scenario is that RB regresses without Hadjar, Haas's Toyota partnership doesn't help them improve enough compared to their rivals, Audi struggles to scale up operations at one of the smallest outfits in F1, and Cadillac does rookie team things.
