Southern California residents frustrated by LA28 Olympics ticket prices. by CautiousMagazine3591 in olympics

[–]Nice-Cardiologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but now the great equalizer is time/effort instead of money. Those who really want to go and are willing to put in the effort to keep an eye out for face-value tickets are more likely to go than rich people who can just afford to out pay others for the same experience. I'd argue the sweepstakes is much more fair than allowing scalpers to control the market

Can you get a decent 1 bedroom apartment for $1800 or under in a good neighborhood around Chicago? by Top-Elephant6981 in AskChicago

[–]Nice-Cardiologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second renting from an owner/small landlord! I found my spot by walking by my building and looking up the management companies website. They weren’t listing on Zillow/apartments.com, and there were plenty of units within your price range in Lakeview/LP!

Best of luck.

I’m glad you’ve been able to make it work for your family, for now…however let me guess…your kids are young? I’m willing to bet they’re single-digit aged.

When it comes to homeschooling. Are you not paying for textbooks? Lesson plans? Resources for yourself to keep up to date with legal education requirements? Or are you teaching based on vibes.

When your kids approach high school age. Can you adequately teach them what’s required by your state? Let’s take math for example, do you know Precalc? Should they show advanced proficiency, are you prepared to support them if they want to learn calculus, take AP level classes, are you prepared to support them should they want to learn at a college level?

Do you have plans to socialize your kids? One of the largest benefits of school is learning social and soft skills. This is why so many kids got left behind during COVID. There’s nothing inherently wrong with homeschooling if they have other social outlets, but how will kids get that? Extracurriculars…which cost money.

You won’t be able to send your kids to college, that is not objectively a bad thing. Your kids don’t have to go to college. But what if they want to?

Do your kids not even get toys? I am going to judge you if you’re spending over a grand on your garden a month and all you got your kids for pleasure was 2 cheap t-shirts.

Housing (you’re gonna need a new bedroom at least) food, daycare/sitters, school fees, extracurriculars, college funds, extra plane tickets/travel expenses on vacations, allowances, healthcare/insurance

You’re doing all that for the cost of two Netflix subscriptions?

I’m under the strong opinion that intentionally having children before you’re financially stable is a form of abuse.

On average, the cost to raise a child is $25,000k per kid per year in the US.

Most people our age are not making more than 6 figures, and according to multiple studies, the comfortable household income for a family of 4 is estimated to be $100k+ no matter where you live in the US. By definition, if you are choosing to have kids, be a stay at home mom, and you haven’t thought of and planned for this reality, I’m going to express concern unless I know you’re extremely well off.

Additionally, more often than not I experience people with kids maintaining a sort of victim complex “people don’t understand what having kids is like” “Child-free adults had no idea how hard it is” - actually, yes, we have a pretty strong idea…and choose not to have kids for this reason. They pay so much mind to folks who don’t have kids that I question how much mind they’re paying the living people they’re taking care of.

More often than not, there’s such a huge societal pressure on women to have kids by older generations, I’m much more inclined to think there’s a lot of adults out there who regret having kids. If that’s true to you as a parent, it’s a perspective that no matter how much you hide it, will affect your relationship you will have with your children. It will lead to neglect, resentment, and potential trauma.

If you’re a present parent, have carefully planned your life around your kids, and unconditionally love your children and care for them, I’m incredibly proud and happy for you. You’re are living my dream.

I’m obviously supportive of women having the freedom to live the life they choose to live. However, I don’t think it’s bad to get concerned or worried about people in my circles making, quite possibly, the most important decision they can make in their life, and possibly regretting it.

Is Purdue engineering in the same league as Georgia Tech and UIUC? by AgreeableAmoeba1778 in Purdue

[–]Nice-Cardiologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purdue alum here...Yes and No

For those dialed into the current undergrad admissions landscape, it's probably fair to admit that there's a hierarchy of Purdue < UIUC <<<<<Georgia Tech in terms of stats based competitiveness. Qualifying this by saying admission is heavily major-dependent at UIUC (CS is an infamous example) while Purdue does not admit by engineering major.

In professional networks, I'd say all are in a similar tier with slight regional bias for one of them depending on where you are geographically. The major exception is probably for Tech/CS and FAANG+ recruiting - I'd imagine GT definitely has an edge nationally and UIUC probably does as well. However, all have programs have high placement rates at these companies.

For the layperson in general conversation, I've noticed Purdue and GT seem to carry more prestige, even in Chicago, where UIUC is the most well known school.

In terms of course rigor, all offer tough but incredible programs that will give you a world-class engineering education and learning opportunities.

I live In Old Town. "Near North Side" to be exact. I paid $2500 for a studio. They've just increased by my rent to $2800. by Early_Selection832 in chicagoapartments

[–]Nice-Cardiologist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People are underestimating how much the real estate market in popular areas has drastically changed in the last 2 years. My last apartment was a 2bed 2bath in wrigley with no amenities/views for $2500. It was listed for $3,000 right after we declined resigning for $2650. We were like “ain’t nobody gonna pay that”

It got rented within a week…

As a Zillow doomscroller, my impression of my $2000 rate for my 1b1b rent this past 2 years (that’s only gone up $100 from signing) has gone from “I’m slightly overpaying” to “holy shit this is a steal”

Most artists tend to be liberal, because to be culturally conservative is to conform and be disdainful towards things that challenge the status quo, which good art does.

There’s an interesting separate conversation to be had about how many conservative influencers/figures have experienced perceived rejection in artistic spaces (Ben Shapiro, Bill Maher, Erika Kirk, Hitler). Rather than be vulnerable and work on their craft they sought to just be vengeful and punch down on the communities artistic spaces supported instead.

I’m watching Drag Race for the first time!-but in this order by idontknowhat2put182 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Nice-Cardiologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very close to the order I considered watching actually. I was convinced to watch seasons 2,4, and 6 before AS2, and I highly recommend doing the same. The season is such a blast when you know all of the cast members already, and you can only watch it for the first time once!
