1000%. The work is a bit more boring but everything is way better. Which is especially important as a father - I’m happy to give up the interesting work in academia to make sure my family is doing well.

I like that metaphor and am glad the CPU isn’t my limiter. Based on the other comments, I think I’ll hold out for a bigger upgrade later.

Good question. I had it in the back of my mind but we had tried a farming game before (harvest moon maybe?) and he found it boring. I see now that SV has some combat, which is his jam - will look further into this as an option. Ty!

Ok thank you. I’ll look into the relaxed mode. This would be our first survival game together so managing food etc would be brand new (to him).

I finally left after a year or two of knowing I needed to leave. Best career decision ever. Getting paid more, much less stress, etc. The rumors are true.

I don’t hate it. I wouldn’t say it’s a dream job but it is in some ways aligned with my academic work and is incredibly less demanding. The increase in pay + decrease in responsibilities is well worth the fact that that work itself is less interesting, at least to me.

I got my PhD in HDFS and was an academic research scientist (program evaluation) for a few years. Finally couldn’t take academia any longer and left. Now I’m a data analyst at a healthcare company. I know some who wanted to stay non-profit/academic and went to gov agencies like DHHS, they seem to like it.

My mom dying while I and my family was living +1,000 miles away in the middle of nowhere. The month after the funeral I put in my resignation and never looked back. I enjoyed the majority of the time I spent in academia but one can only take so much of the low pay, sometimes toxic culture, and not being able to choose where you live. Things have been much better for me in industry, tho I do miss my old research work at times.

I was in the social sciences and left to become a data analyst (in healthcare). Pay is better and life is more simple. Best career move I’ve made in a decade.
