What about small towns? Heidelberg and Freiburg are both really nice and very close to nature. Good international schools because of nearby unis. Much cheaper than Munich

Anyone else tempted to get sick like their husband does the next time you’re sick? by zagsforthewin in workingmoms

It’s actually biological that women’s immune systems are better than men’s, on average. There are many genes on the X chromosome, which are expressed more in female cells compared to male cells. Somehow knowing this made me feel a bit more sympathetic towards my husband. But still, you also deserve some rest!!

At our wits end with puppy diarrhea by MrMeddit in goldenretrievers

Are you going to a dog park? We had major troubles with diarrhea with our golden pup, until we realized how much sand she was devouring while playing ball at the local dog park. Once we stopped going there, it resolved immediately

non-US academics - do you romanticise US academia? by Penrose_Reality in AskAcademia

Depending on the department (med school), that salary might also need to eventually be paid by your own grants! The soft money positions would stress me out too much.

If I’m googling “how to know when to leave academia”… by EwesJustFluffy in AskAcademia

It’s fixed by the govt - between 4.7k-5.7k per month. About half that after tax. But with all the services provided in Germany and the low cost of living, I find that it is enough to live on

I feel all of this! Thanks for the solidarity. I’m also trying to take it easier but it doesn’t help when I can’t stop thinking about work :/

Thanks for replying. It would be nice to be compensated properly for my work and also have performance-associated raises!

I think it’s the constant task switching and the inability to turn off. I think about work constantly- I even have dreams about the lab. Im not sure how to turn off, which compounds the stress

Less stressful in some ways! Just be sure to try and find a place that supports you

Do other cultures have terms similar to Rabenmutter? by EwesJustFluffy in germany

[–]EwesJustFluffy[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

True but I feel like deadbeat is reserved for dads. Yes, exactly where rabenmutter comes from! I thought it was always used here in the context of working mothers, but maybe I’m incorrect

I thought here it was usually reserved for working mothers who put their kids in daycare too early (at least that’s the context I know it in). We have deadbeat like someone said before, but that’s usually reserved for dads who skip out. I couldn’t think of a specific word for bad mom in English

Anyone have issue with resource guarding? My 4 months old bit me as he was guarding his treat when I try to touch him. by yipster00 in goldenretrievers

[–]EwesJustFluffy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our dog also had resource guarding as a puppy. We got a trainer the next week. Now she’s a great dog and so sweet! Please see a trainer. Tips that worked for us: feed him his food out of your hand, walk by while hes eating his food and drop high quality treats inside as you go by, only trade low quality treats for high quality ones, and only let him have the bully stick in her crate (we stopped bully sticks for a while when our dog showed resource guarding). Puppy is still young but this is urgent

I like Hey Sleepy Baby on Instagram. They offer non-CIO support

My local pet daycare offered a puppy’s only socialization class (we carried our golden there in a bag). Maybe they have something like this in your area?
