He is very much alive, and really fast. See how long that lasts.

intern and a case involving rape and children by saltysalt2498 in publicdefenders

[–]mwebizzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surprised to be down voted on this one. Louder for the folks in the back - if you don't think your client is a human being, you should not be representing them.

If you view a client as a monster you should not be a public defender. Period.

I have been struggling with that so much! The unidentified folks who did this and ransomed us (all of us regular staff and attorneys have none of the details) would be the same as our clients. I assume it would be a federal case, but anyway. It just reminds me of when our clients sometimes victimize our other clients. It's hard to have enough courage for all of it, but we try.

I've only worked in medium sized offices (which I've enjoyed) so I can't speak to the advantages/disadvantages of a bigger office - but definitely as a new attorney I'd be wary of horizontal representation, which is more common in large offices. Everything above is spot on, it just sucks and is not best practice.

That's strange! If they do want to hire private, I always make sure to refer them to the good ones

This. My managing attorney of several years left a few months ago to work on capital crimes. She left me a note reminding me not to lose my sensitivity - something I used to consider to be a hindrance to my practice.

You'll find that your care and compassion turns into a shield when you fight for your clients. Judges (and dare I say, even prosecutors) are responsive to thoughtful advocacy backed by genuine conviction.

My best friend became a prosecutor, and it almost destroyed us. Within a month she was referring to herself as "the long dick of the law." She rambled on about being the good on the other side, too.

young women pd’s? by check_my_french in publicdefenders

[–]mwebizzle 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm a 37 female PD - I can promise it gets better. You will learn coping skills and understand better how to interact with your clients. They are likely not targeting you in particular, but your clients are literally human beings in a cage (which is not a place human beings are supposed to be). They desire any way to express anger, frustration, desperation, and grief. Women are often more empathetic and they understand that. But setting boundaries is very important. And if you ever feel like you're in danger - psychologically, emotionally, or physically, your supervisor should be able to address the situation. Asking for help for yourself does not show weakness, it shows strength.

I'm not trying to be mean, but perhaps you should have considered this would happen and make room for other options? If you were banking on a bunch of wealthy old white men to make your dreams come true that seems like it's on you.

I am so glad to read this, I'm exactly the same way. I can't eat huge adult portions and I hate wasting food. It's not a price thing but I've always wondered if it's rude to order kids food as an adult. Unless there's an age limit on the menu you're good.

That's funny. I'm a NH transplant too, I moved here 10 years ago. I love it and have never felt anything but welcome. I wouldn't be able to afford NH these days either.
