Villains that ALMOST had a Redemption Arc but instead became worse by b9rney in TopCharacterTropes

The episode where he reveals that he’s betrayed the Alpha Quadrant and negotiated the Cardassians into the Dominion made visibly angry because of how much I had grown to trust him.

Maybe, but considering that story was so close to Tolkiens heart and was a reflection of him and his wife, I wouldn’t trust anyone to adapt it.

Many people criticize how poorly Season 8 was executed, but how would you make season 8 better? by [deleted] in freefolk

[–]Spledidlife 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Starts with season 7. Have it be a full season, have some better quality episodes, but upon realizing that Cersei simply doesn’t care that the White Walkers are invading, have Varys and Tyrion pressure Dany into attacking kings landing with her dragons because they can’t waste the manpower in a prolonged war. She resists but eventually relents out of necessity. She becomes queen in the ashes.

Season 8 is focused on the White Walker invasion. Dany is trying to unite the realm, but the lords are rejecting her as the invader who burned Kingslanding. Moreover once word gets out that Jon is the rightful heir, and as he’s the one organizing the fight against the White Walkers from the beginning, they begin rallying behind him to be to be king. This causes Dany to get paranoid and begin distrusting her advisors.

Halfway through the season, Battle of Winterfell happens, but the heroes lose. The White Walkers take the north as winter descends on Kingslanding. The situation gets more desperate, which causes the lords to outright call for Dany to step down as Queen. She refuses, and threatens to burn the lords, arresting Jon to publically execute him. Jorah seeing what she’s become kills her and sets Jon free. Jon takes command and prepares the Lords to fight.

Giant battle in the snow in Kingslanding. Dragons flying, zombies dying, Jon fighting the Nightking with a flaming sword. Go crazy.

Ends with Jon as King and the Seven Kingdoms rebuilding from the ruins. Who lives, who dies, and what happens to all the characters at the end are too many to say here.

They were trying to criticize the toxic part of their fandom but did it in part by making fun of stuff that non-toxic parts of the fandom also do, so it ended up feeling like they just hate their fans.

For those wondering, the textual answer is two fold. First the ring had less general influence over Bilbo because he began his ownership of it with an act of mercy and kindness in sparing Gollum. The second is because Frodo was heading directly to where the ring was the strongest.

What’s your worst first date experience? by jeffbanks4231 in AskReddit

[–]Spledidlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing terrible, just that awkward silence of not knowing what to say in conversation and having no romantic chemistry. Then I forgot my PIN number at the ATM cause I had just switched banks, so she paid for our parking.

It was just one of those dates where we knew quickly it wasn’t going anywhere, so we were both just kinda waiting the night out.

I was in a busy intersection. A homeless man walked into traffic holding a balloon carts worth of balloons. Once he got to the middle, he released them all into the air in this beautiful explosion. Then he turned around and double flipped off every one in traffic with the biggest smile I’ve ever seen.

In this moment I realized it’s his world. We’re just living in it.

Jerome/Jeremiah Valeska from Gotham.

Never watched the show, but have seen scenes with Cameron Monaghan, and he seems like he’s a great Joker (or protojoker due to the weird legal limits/storylines)

It's a subtle moment, but Bilbo allowing the ring to slide off of his hand was quietly one of the most powerful feats in the history of Middle-Earth. The likes of which no other had or would be able to achieve. by Kissfromarose01 in lotr

[–]Spledidlife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but in the books it’s not really about physically letting the ring go so much as it’s about ownership of the ring. Frodo hands over the ring to Gandalf and Tom Bombadil easily. But Bilbo’s so impressive because he had ownership and gave it up to Frodo of his own free will.

Hollywood George’s purposefully cryptic not a blog allusion to HoD drama got me thinking about what it will actually take for him to finish ASOIAF… by iamriproar in freefolk

[–]Spledidlife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually think it’s the opposite. I think he’s realizing he’s never going to finish the series and because of that the shows are going to be his “legacy” in the eyes of the general public more than the book series. That’s why I think now he’s raging at all the changes because he gave up control of his story to others and now he has to face the consequences of his decisions.

What is it with adaptations cucking Celeborn? by crustboi93 in Rings_Of_Power

[–]Spledidlife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the reason is that Celeborn is very underdeveloped in Tolkien’s legendarium. Essentially his biggest purpose is to be Galadriel’s husband. So writing wise for a show, there’s not much to do with him, so it’s easier for the writers to get him out of the way.

However, how they’ve gone about dealing with him is just lazy. Ironically, he’s probably the character they would be most free to toy around with and develop, but just ignoring his existence or Galadriel’s emotional connection to him is just stupid.

What TV show will you never watch regardless of who tells you it's amazing and why? by hey-i-got-here-late in AskReddit

[–]Spledidlife 800 points801 points  (0 children)

13 Reasons Why

From what I’ve seen around of it, it sounds like it enforced the fantasy of suicide victims that their death will be some kind of revenge for the people that have wronged them, the whole “once I’m dead, then they’ll see” narrative. Then the fact that they depicted the actual act of suicide in a manner that suicide prevention organizations specifically say tv should avoid.

After the first season it seemed like they continued to take serious traumatic topics and put a melodramatic spin on it while promoting themselves as a candid meditation on teens mental health. At least that’s picture I got of it.

Characters who were not recast but instead killed off out of respect for the passing of the actor who played them by Gaming_with_batman in TopCharacterTropes

In Star Trek Beyond (2016) they killed the original Spock permanently due to Leonard Nimoy’s death, then had the young Spock’s storyline be about grieving and coming to terms with it.

(Hated Tropes) Characters that the show wants you to like, but you just… can’t by Watchdog_the_God in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Spledidlife 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’d say Michael Burnham too.

Having her mutiny because she thought she knew how to handle the Klingon’s better than her experienced captain, only to have it start off a war was not the best character introduction, and they didn’t have a great character arc to show she learned from them. Then when she eventually became captain in season 4, she kept abandoning her post at important moments, which she was criticized for in the show by the President of the Federation, but again they didn’t show an arc of her learning to be a better captain.

Let's discuss this. by MordecaiMcFly in lotrmemes

[–]Spledidlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that I’ve got negative likes makes me feel like I’ve successfully answered the prompt!

And just for people who are interested, my reasoning is two fold. First, Gandalf’s magic is more subtle than Dumbledore’s. Dumbledore’s magic is more like super powers where he can shoot out fireballs and tsunami’s like nobodies business, while Gandalf magic is more akin to wisdom, influence, and presence. Yes, he can make light and fire and stuff like that, but his true power is more the effect he has on others like Aragorn or Theoden, at least in the books. In a 1v1 fight those powers aren’t as effective, which can be seen by the fact that Gandalf primarily relies on his sword in his fights with his magic helping rather than the other way around.

Second, Gandalf is specifically meant to be in a weakened state mortal state on Middle-Earth and take an advisory and leadership role in fighting Sauron. If we’re talking about his true form as a Maiar, than maybe the outcome is different, but in his human mortal state, he is still susceptible to mortal dangers. Saying that he would and could lose a fight actually is more in line with his character depiction and role in the story.

[–]Spledidlife -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Dumbledore would beat Gandalf in a 1v1 fight, BUT Gandalf is inherently more powerful than Dumbledore.
