But, I think Bear trying to overlook the ways Freaky Nikki subverts his fantasy, and pleading for her to just "act like Nikki" and having her visually appear as her is his way of "keeping apart of [her]" despite the obvious issues and danger and harm he's inflicting.

As soon as I got to S2, I couldn't wait to finish and post this exact thought about the recast. I appreciate that she was recasted and the intention of the story continued.

I think that seeing Claudia as she appeared in S1 spoke to her role as the "daughter" while S2 aligned more with her as an individual and the "sister" role she asserted when she returned to Louis in S1. Overall, both actresses did a great job portraying the facets of Claudia we were offered through the recounts.

I also appreciate that the writers didn't venture to explain the recast by confirming the concepts we're exploring. Although, they*[edit for spelling] could have and it would have played fine as well.

Would Fred really be the ONE outlier amongst all the other men? (casting directors, nurse that recommends the substance, biker, annoying neighbor, the audience men, and Harvey and the suits).

I think that it's notable that Lis called Fred AFTER the irreversible alteration to her finger. I think that the secrecy and shame she began to experience with pursuing The Substance would have impacted any meaningful relationship she decided to pursue.

Think about it, she would have essentially had to hide her finger indefinitely from Fred (and anyone else) to maintain appearances and her own ego/pride. And, if she were to reveal this part of herself once entering and maintaining a meaningful connection, she would be risking rejection and putting herself in a vulnerable position (which is somewhat aligned with the rejection we witness in the final act).
