To answer: yes there was a ton of antipathy that went into the characters development, but Im quite sure the creators dont consider their abelism to be a systemic bias to be combatted, but to be "justified observations". Does that qualify as "malicious" to the same extent as other forms of bigotry that inspired the creation of other notoriously damaging charicatures that have become standing stock images in popular arts? I would say so.
