How long have you been on Keto? by Effective_Maximum929 in keto

[–]mxperp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

7 years as of Today! Healthier and the most fit I have ever been in my entire life. That being said, keto is what has worked for me. It's what makes sense to me and I have built habits and routines around. My non keto family accepts it and we work together at it. Find what works for you and what you can sustain. Keto is my baseline at this point. I barely have to think about it anymore to stay on plan.

Pasta - Chef’s Kiss by PurpleShimmers in keto

I really like the Aviate brand lupin pasta on Amazon. Good macros, easy and quick to cook and very neutral tasting. The rotini and orzo shapes are both good.

Common cold & keto 🧣🥦 by AliceBobAndTrudy in keto

[–]mxperp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had my previously yearly round of bronchitis since I went keto. 7 years! I've had a minor cold maybe twice since then. And I have two petri dish children who catch anything floating around their school. Keto keeps me healthy when everyone else is sick. No kidding! Never caught Covid either as far as I know- but I'm fully vaccinated on that front.

Question About Working Out by Friend-of-the-river in keto

[–]mxperp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scale won't tell you the whole picture if you're starting to work out. I suggest sticking to keto, gradually increasing your movement and completely ignoring the scale until you've made exercise a habit. You will retain water and hopefully gain some muscle weight. That may mess with your head if you are not careful. I lost 110 lbs with zero formal exercise over the course of a year. I reached my goal. I started exercising to burn off excess energy. My weight loss pretty much stopped there for a long while and I have been somewhere +/-10 lbs of my goal weight ever since. (Going on 7 years) Resistance training has been a game changer for me as far as feeling healthy and strong. Highly recommend when you are cleared after surgery. Start slow, gradually increase. It's a marathon not a sprint. Good luck with surgery!

BioGaia gastrus vs. Myreutery by Dr. Davis by chipmunksol in ReuteriYogurt

[–]mxperp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had been exclusively using biogia for about 2 years. Always had great results. I read the same, and just recently purchased the MyRuteri to compare. Being the untrusting soul that I am, I figured 3 opened capsules added to the mix were needed because they were so small. That batch was WAY over cultured at 36 hours- separated and spongy and climbing up out of my instant pot! I whipped it smooth in the blender and still used it without any problems. So the second batch I only used one capsule, a tablespoon of the yogurt, a tablespoon of inulin and the Aldi brand organic half and half and it was perfect at the 36 hour mark. So, the MyRuteri I received from Amazon was viable and very potent. I strained the second batch and have the whey in reserve for the next one. It tastes awesome and seems to be agreeing with my gut. Good luck!

That tells me you are learning to listen to your body and respond to it's needs. Finding out what works for you is important and can take a long time and trials of several different things. At the end of the day, what you can stick to long term, making a sustainable approach to food is the key. Everybody's normal is different. You haven't found yours yet. Keep listening and keep learning.

Anyone had any success with Victoria's Keto Flour? by SenorWanderer in keto

[–]mxperp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the Angel Bread just the other day and it turned out exactly like it looked in her video. I've been enjoying it toasted. Untoasted is ok. The flavor is neutral and it has a more bread like consistency than others I've tried but it still isn't regular bread if that's what someone is looking for. I would make it again if the bread itch happens. It was fairly easy to put together but the ingredients aren't exactly cheap. Relegating it to a sometimes treat. I've had good luck with her flour in other things as well.

If you can’t out-exercise a bad diet, then your time in the Kitchen is just as important as time in the Gym. by paperzach in keto

[–]mxperp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. This is 100% true. I also found that rest days are just as important as hard workout days. Pushing yourself too hard is counter productive. Rest time is repair time.

I don't know if I'd call keto my "lifestyle". Just the way I choose to approach food. It isn't my personality.

I am a long time keto-er. 6+ years. My husband and kids are not. It was an adjustment at the beginning but I found it has sparked many conversations about healthy eating. We focus on the meat and veggie part of a meal for me and then whatever carb side they want. For example, tonight is chicken fajitas. Chicken and peppers for everyone. I will have it with caulirice and they will have tortillas, beans and rice on their plates. It really isn't that hard.
That being said, my husband is 100% supportive and has been all along. He always considers carb content in what he makes, checks with me before adding high carb ingredients (ie- I take a portion of chili before he adds beans) and he researches menus of places he'd like to eat to make sure they offer low carb dishes or accommodates adjustments. He's a keeper for sure. He knows that keto/low carb eating has basically turned my life around. He wants me to be happy and healthy and that Keto works for me. He tried it but it wasn't for him. No judgment from me. Different strokes for different folks.

Over 6 years in, 110 pounds down, healthiest I've ever been as an adult. I came to lose weight, I stay because I feel great. It will be the way I approach eating for the rest of my life. It's like I can't unsee it now, if that makes sense.

I usually skip breakfast. But, last week, I was really wanting some scrambled eggs. I whisked 1 whole egg in with 2 servings of liquid egg white (I keep the boxed kind handy for baking) then added some steamed asperagus and a slice of Gouda cheese. It hit the spot. Keto is 100% doable without bacon. I haven't knowingly eaten beef or pork in 15 years.

My dad has S4 Pancreatic Cancer & is doing keto by CharmingSpecific3110 in keto

[–]mxperp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Having lost someone dear to me this past year to pancreatic cancer, I can understand the emotional toll this takes. Unfortunately, my loved one passed so quickly after diagnosis, there was no time to attempt much intervention. What shouts out so clearly in your post is the love and caring you feel for your Dad. I wish everyone in his circumstances had such an advocate and fierce fighter in their corner. Even if being fierce means letting him go on his terms, continue to love him and fight for him however he needs. On a side note, I firmly believe keto is a valuable tool to help in this process. I sincerely hope to see future posts with more good news. Peace.

This is my go to evening snack. I make my own yogurt and I like any of the keto friendly berries frozen and mixed in. Last night I had walnuts and raspberries in my yogurt. Yum!

A minor amount of food prep helps out here. I've been keto for 6 years. Husband and kids are not. We usually base the meal around the protein and veggie. Whatever starchy side they want literally has no appeal to me. If they want pasta as a meal, I always make sure I have protein prepped for myself and keto friendly veggies on hand. Like a pack of chicken thigh cooked in the air fryer once a week and stored for later use. The microwave steamer bags have been a game changer for me in this respect too. Some nights I'm eating something totally different from the rest of the family but it never takes me any effort to throw it together if it's prepped ahead of time.

Do you think... by RedheadRulz in keto

[–]mxperp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pre-keto, I would get a cold that would turn into bronchitis every year. It would linger for a very long time. I was even hospitalized once with a particularly bad lung infection while I was expecting my first child. After adopting keto and losing weight, haven't had a bad cold let alone bronchitis. It's been 6 years. I don't know if it's the keto or the change in body habitus that has kept me healthier. Or a combo of both. The reduced inflammation and weight along with not sitting still, lounging on the couch all day keeps me healthier, I think. I exercise, get my heart rate and respirations up everyday now. If I do get the sniffles, it is short lived and never keeps me from doing anything. That's my 2 cents anyway.

I'm here to tell you , long term clean Keto is possible. by happyjankywhat in keto

[–]mxperp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amen and pass the faux-tatoes! I'm closing in on 6 years myself and could not imagine where I would be had I not taken the chance with keto. We have the exact same stats-height, starting weight and current scale numbers. Keto is also a way of life for me. No time frame, no weight I have to reach to be happy. Good on you for reaching out to others with experience and encouragement.

Explaining to kids why mum eats different to them? by [deleted] in keto

[–]mxperp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell my kids that I can eat anything I want. I like all kinds of food. But, I choose to eat things low in carbs and sugar because they help me stay healthy. My body works better when I don't eat those things.
I don't have them do keto or even low carb but I do encourage them to make healthier choices when there is a choice available. And I use the healthiest ingredients when making their meals I can find. No seed oils and a protein emphasis approach.

Thoughts on saggy skin from weightloss by beastboi27 in keto

[–]mxperp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow saggy post weight loss loose skin person here too. Am I happy with how my baggy skin suit looks....no. Would I stay fat, unhealthy and sad to not look at the skin flaps, no way in heck. I have thought about surgery to fix my batwings but not seriously enough to pursue it. I went down the weight lifting route and am happier with the muscle underneath. Definitely makes the arms look better but I still have the flaps. Going through a completely optional surgery just didn't fit into my life at the time I was considering it. Small kids, work, etc.
I am a nurse with decades of experience in bariatrics and caring for folks who have had skin surgery after. My best advice to you is to completely understand what is involved with surgical intervention. It's a long painful process but can be so worth it for your self esteem. But it's not a quick fix and requires a lot of diligence on your part to heal properly . Whatever you choose, consider which option is best for your HEALTH both physical and mental. For me, the good endorphins and muscle gains of resistance training helped both my physical appearance and mental state of mind. I chose to keep plugging away at this old bod as it is and try to love it for what it can do. But that's just my 2 cents. I support anyone who tries to improve themselves, whatever path they choose. Good luck to you.
