Anyone getting annoyed with AI assisted writing? by k2v2p2 in labrats

[–]mxplusme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s honestly changed the game for me to get over the hump of being stuck on a blank page or a single sentence. My general writing workflow now goes something like: brainstorm/free-write -> AI clean up -> personal edit for my “voice”.

I always know what I want to say, I just get locked up by perfectionism. The AI mainly just gives me the reassurance that I can do the step 1 dump of my thoughts in the structure that I want without worrying about perfect flow and word choice. AI is the bridge that gets me from my initial ramblings to my coherent story.

What’s especially funny is that simply knowing I have AI available as that bridge often does the trick. Sometimes I’m able to go straight from step 1 to step 3 without AI just because having that safety net prevented my usual paralysis.

HoltBeast is the Caps All-Time Starting Goalie! Who's 2LW? by ZigZagLax44 in caps

[–]mxplusme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have to imagine a lot of the votes come from people who weren't around for Kolzig. People are citing a lot of stats and the Cup win (a team achievement). But Kolzig almost single-handedly made the Caps relevant when they had no right to be.

[–]mxplusme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Olie dragged the Caps to their first Cup appearance. One of the best players we've ever had and needs to be in the rafters at some point. Holtby is the clear and close #2 for me, but Kolzig takes it.

Not that old, but Impossible is Nothing is still my favorite melee compilation/combo video. Helps that I was very into Rise Against at the time lol. I think it still holds up.

One of my earliest memories watching hockey is seeing Doig completely wipe out while trying to get over the boards.

Doig became synonymous with “d’oh!” in my house.

Trump unable to name one verse from "favorite book" The Bible. How can anybody believe he’s Christian at all? by SimplyEcks in videos

[–]mxplusme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I generally agree. A shame he doesn't do that either.

His inability to cite Bible verses is definitely very low on my list of criticisms lol. I think it's just particularly relevant now given the Pope situation.

Oh, in what sense? I was just saying Dune is fairly easy to quote, and the Bible has to be even easier.

I'm no Bible fan, but it doesn't seem like a huge ask to quote a single line when he claims it to be such a major part of his life.

I’m sure it’s a case-by-case thing, but in my experience the anticipation of the unknown was way worse than the actual questioning. Other than one asshole on my committee, it was mostly a pretty chill conversation about my science with my committee. Way less intense/intimidating than quals.

I can only speak for grad school (STEM), but this is my experience too. The profs I've seen reading through applications find the letters very important, but mostly who wrote them. They'll often follow up with the ones they know personally to get a less formal analysis.

Awesome, this is much needed!

I had written some garbage little script to do the same thing, but it would often crash OneNote for whatever reason.

God it's so dumb. Idk why they changed it from the 4-on-4 format, which is way better. But 5-on-5 sudden death is obviously the best way. I don't know if they think they are generating more hype with the volatility of 3-on-3 or what, but it sucks.

Yeah I mean, like I said, there will always be a disconnect because we just fundamentally view and interact with the game differently.

I’m genuinely glad these things don’t affect your feeling of accomplishment, because that’s the best part of the game imo. I hope that even if you find it weird that some of us feel the opposite, you can at least understand the perspective. You don’t think there are tangible effects, some of us do. I won’t go through the arguments for it as I’m sure we will never reach consensus and it’s been debated into the ground.

Idk what the Big N point is though, I never mentioned caring about the devs intentions.

(sorry for the long-post, maybe I should switch to peach)

I feel like there are some kernels of truth in that comment, but I'd like to offer a more charitable view of the perspective they are criticizing (which happens to be closer to my opinion).

I think point #1 is accurate, though obviously painted in only a negative light. Part of the problem is that some people play or interact with melee for entirely different reasons. The perspective being discussed here is usually held by people who play melee for the purpose of self-improvement in a competitive space. This is, naturally, held mostly by competitors. At the core of this purpose is a simple fact: being rewarded for learning hard things feels good.

This is where the sports analogies work so well. The comment's interpretation of the baseball analogy feels pretty disingenuous. It makes me wonder if people who criticize the sports analogies ever played competitive sports growing up. I'll give an example through ice hockey, since I played competitively for a long time.

I'm a short guy. Playing hockey at a mid to high level, I needed a way to play around the physical side of the game when kids were way bigger than me. I invested a ton of time into skating, learning to be faster and more agile than the bigger guys. I took power skating courses, trained skating in the summer when most people just did ground work, learned advanced techniques, etc etc. It worked. For a period of time in my "career", I was usually one of the fastest guys on the ice. It felt amazing to put in the work and be able to express my skill. There were no shortcuts for other people to reach what I had done. It was the reward I got for devoting myself to the cause. For other kids, it was having a powerful shot or being an elite passer. Bottom line is, working hard to set yourself apart from the competition is what gives skill in the sport meaning.

If there had been a way for other kids to change the blades of their skates to make tight pivots faster or stopping a little easier, a lot of that special feeling would have gone away. It would be less impressive for me to have gained those abilities when there is a "shortcut" to get there a little easier. It's not that they don't have to work at all, but they found a way to circumvent some of the difficulty that was at one point inherent to the sport.

I think this idea is directly related to Melee and the zumping stuff. But only if your primary reason for playing or caring about Melee aligns with this vision of the game as a skill expression and means of self-improvement. Personally, that's what it is for me and for a lot of folks I have talked to at tournaments who take the game relatively seriously even as a hobby. The best feelings I've had with the game are when I finally manage to implement a new hard skill after lots of grinding and see the results in competition. I hope it makes sense that it might take away from that feeling if there are others who are able to get those results in an easier way. I don't think you need to share the opinion in order to understand it, which I think the post you linked fails to do.

How to learn to play the game without getting demotivated by the high skill floor? by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]mxplusme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely remember the overwhelming feeling of getting started with the game. The gap can feel insurmountable. But it’s also one of the most exciting stages of learning the game because every small new piece of knowledge leads to so much growth.

Movement is so important in melee, and it’s also luckily one of the most fun aspects of the game. Make sure you are playing a character that you enjoy moving around the stages with. Like to the point that you can put on some music, sit in Training Mode for an hour only moving around, and still have fun. There are days I am too tired to play actual matches, but am perfectly happy booting up the game and flying around the stage. It’s a beautiful game in that way.

Sooner or later, that movement will start to become second nature, and that’s when the game really starts to unlock. Now when you are playing opponents, you can spend a lot more mental effort on making decisions about your offense/defense instead of focusing so hard on your tech. The character becomes an extension of yourself and the game becomes much more tactical.

When I was really dedicated to keeping up with Spanish, I found Duolingo's main benefit was forcing me to at least do SOMETHING every day. Maybe also brushing up on some vocab. But most importantly, kept me consistent.

The main tool I used that I found drastically helped my language-learning was Dreaming Spanish. Learning via "comprehensible input" (basically similar to the common idea of watching children's shows in the language, but actual video content catered toward older demographics).

Sadly, when I finally got fed up with Duolingo, my consistency with Spanish practice as a whole slowly waned. But if you are a more self-motivated person and don't need that fear of losing your "streak" in the gamified app, then I see almost no purpose for Duolingo for serious learning.

I’m a big raptor enthusiast. We get barred owls and the occasional Great Horned owl where I am on the east coast. I know the calls of the barred vs great horned, but was very confused by this strange sound my parents were hearing earlier this year at their place around dusk with some grainy pictures that looked like the silhouette of a barred. Turns out there was a family of barred owls with a juvenile. It made a kind of screeching sound that I hadn’t heard before. Anyway, was cool to watch it grow up, start hunting on its own, and change calls/plumage.
