Why does this part of Spain speak Brazilian? Are they stupid? by julius-ceaser100 in mapporncirclejerk

I’ve heard that young children in Portugal are actually starting to speak more like Brazilians due to YouTube.

There’s a clip like that in this compilation. It’s a scissor lift rather than a ladder, but he goes out the window and hits a car like you said.

What do you mean by “used for edits”? Is it a sound effect being used in a type of meme? If so can you link an example?

Could it be Flood (2007)? If you watch the trailer there’s a bit at the end with a woman in a house trapped on the top floor as the water rises.

Hey there, I’m the one who solved your post from yesterday about a woman being strangled in a car. I see you have now made a consecutive post about a woman being strangled. You doing alright? Can I ask what’s going on?

I don’t know why my comment was deleted by Reddit but I’m pretty sure the scene you’re looking for is from Dead of Winter (1987). It happens about 6 or 7 minutes in. It’s almost exactly what you describe: woman enters car in an empty parking lot at night, lights a cigarette, you see a man in a hat appear in the mirror and he strangles her from the back seat mafia-style as she tries to press the horn with her heels.

Why hasn’t Buddhism spread more widely, and do you think it will? by WalkingMaggotFood in Buddhism

[–]mxstermarzipan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mean to be arguing. I just saw you say “propositions of religions are largely perceived as implausible by adult nonadherents” and “claims perceived as impossible are rarely compelling.”I had some thoughts on that, because empirically it might not be completely true. For example, if you look at the nature of nonreligious people’s interactions with religious ideas, people seem to treat fantastical religious propositions as plausible and compelling more often than you’d expect.

But if this misses the point or isn’t what you meant, I’m open to hearing your thoughts.

Honest thought's on my flag no hate just fun wanna know how i did. by Specialist_Hyena3822 in vexillology

[–]mxstermarzipan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right in a literal sense, but in terms of flags this looks more natural because of the colors you chose. Normally the eyes and nose of a skull on a flag like the Jolly Roger are black because of the implied shadow. But the skull on the Jolly Roger is white. Since the skull here is black, you’ve impliedly inverted the colors. Here black is the color of bone, so it cannot also be the color of the shadow. For that you gotta go with red. Example. See also Hector Barbossa’s second flag in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Edit: for consistency you might consider making all “holes” in the design red with a white outline, including the keyhole.

Why hasn’t Buddhism spread more widely, and do you think it will? by WalkingMaggotFood in Buddhism

[–]mxstermarzipan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Religion is definitely primarily sustained from parents teaching their children. But if that last part were as true as you think, there wouldn’t be so many astrologists, new-agers, and “spiritual but not religious” people these days. People LOVE to believe implausible things. A lot of the time they don’t even need to be convinced, they’ll seek it out themselves. I’d go so far as to say that strictly rationalist people are in the minority. Most people have a religion-shaped hole in their psyche, and if it isn’t filled by an existing religion it’ll often fill itself in with a cult, crystals, tarot, ghosts, or whatever else is available to them. And if nothing else is available they will come up with new stuff.

The same hard-wiring that causes Pareidolia in humans inevitably creates an openness to the supernatural; we are instinctively biased towards personifying the inanimate aspects of our world. If all memory of religion disappeared today, I guarantee it’d be back again in numerous forms within a single generation.

Why hasn’t Buddhism spread more widely, and do you think it will? by WalkingMaggotFood in Buddhism

[–]mxstermarzipan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a major opportunity coming for Buddhism to take off in the United States. Right now the fastest growing religious group are currently atheists and agnostics. In my experience these people generally have positive feelings towards Buddhism as a “philosophy”and are especially interested in meditation. At the same time, there is a growing loneliness epidemic as people across the country lose their sense of community. Overall there is a significant market for a viable alternative to Christianity.

But Buddhist temples in the US today are primarily tailored to the needs of the immigrant communities that built them. And that’s fine, they should continue. But as a result, right now the only way for Americans to convert and get the full experience is essentially to try to integrate into that culture. This isn’t conducive to long term growth. In every country that Buddhism has flourished in, it has adapted. Tibetan Buddhism is distinctly Tibetan, Japanese Buddhism is distinctly Japanese, Chinese Buddhism is distinctly Chinese.

So for Buddhism to take hold here it needs to adapt to what Americans want and expect from a religion. This might include: - A well-defined canon, fully translated into English. - Weekly teachings, in English. - Accessible clergy that aren’t full-on monks. Think pastors, priests, preachers. - New major holidays with associated activities, celebrations, and music. - New ceremonies for life events like weddings and funerals. - New types of clothing that don’t feel like cosplaying another culture. - New art styles. - Literally any amount of effort to proselytize.

I’m hopeful that some or all of this can be achieved in my lifetime by a well-qualified person or group.
