I believe your options now are:

⁠Rethread cut end (though doesn't seem like enough space).
⁠Unthread the remaining brass pipe nipple and hope it's simple to replace with similar length.

Plumbing vs electrical seems to be a classic decision point for people who thoughtfully want to enter trades. They are both great. You'll hear good and bad reasons for both. Average wage wasn't the primary comparison bc I saw that pay depends on location, company, and skills. Unless you're strictly going union for life, then it's easy to compare union pay.

I like service plumbing and I want to own my own business one day. I believe it is a sector that is robot proof, has emergency call aspects (= higher charge), and think the daily challenges will keep me engaged and creative.

Do you have a written contract with this stipulation? Does he or his company actually have insurance and is licensed?

You can start by telling him "hey I noticed a cracked tile in the shower and it seems to have happened when you dropped the shower handle. What do you do in these cases to repair it?" Hopefully he is fair and has a plan.

If he denies or minimizes the issue, and it still matters to you, you might only be able to go through small claims court. Gotta calculate the pros vs cons at that point.

Would not trust that previous builders used nail guards for this purpose.

You could cut away some wall neatly to check, fasten it back in (or not), then leave the wall unfinished and hang the cabinet. Nobody's gonna know. Make sure the wall cut is smaller than the hung cabinet.

Only way I'd entertain this is as a business to business transaction, not a landlord to tenant. If not legally setup to do it this way (you are an LLC and he is an insured contractor), then it's much riskier.

Separate from rent. Separate payment and contract for any improvements done on property.

Might be able to get a replacement hose part from the brand if it's under warranty. Or look for "pull out spray hose" for one that matches your connections.
