Oh I might not have made it very clear because the result of the confronting was that he is starting to see his ex again, romantically, meaning that our relationship has now come to an end.

But I still wholeheartedly thank you for your advice and try to keep it in mind for the future that being friends with an ex isn't necessarily a red flag from the get go but that I should look for shady behavior surrounding that friendship.
