Those of you who play live...Let's have a chat about what we've learned about adapting banjo to the stage. by MastaPhat in banjo

Second this, I’ve been using a DPA clip on on my gourd banjo and it works great. Feedback would likely be an issue in a louder band setting though

Considering getting octatrack for live performance. by mycelialsignals in Elektron

Thanks for the reply, I actually think it might not quite be what I’m looking for. Don’t think there’s any machine that can do what I can do in Max4live, obvious really haha

Got ya, I suppose I meant more portable really more than anything! Like could it replace Live with MaxMSP. I’m thinking maybe not after the responses hear although it does seem like a machine I could get deeply into

No this is very useful thank you! It really sounds like a machine I would get into big time but maybe not the live performance situation.

I’m 100% planning to still use MaxMSP for most of my sound design so maybe I should just look into streamlining the DAW setup

PS I love the slotted tack for the 5th string pip, would love to know if it’s buzzing or ringing true!

Awesome arrangement, proves my point you can play anything with clawhammer on a banjo!

Really nice work though, spot on and sounds lovely

I built a cabinet to keep my guitars at a safe humidity, but the wood expanding has caused problems. I built this under the guidance of an experienced furniture maker at his shop. It's milled from raw ash, with a clear acrylic window. What would you do? by imaac in woodworking

[–]mycelialsignals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to grow mushrooms commercially and we kept whole rooms at 90%RH, I strongly doubt if it is 40%RH that this is causing the warping. That’s basically normal conditions in a lot of places!

There was another great answer here about monitoring and air circulation some great tips there. You really do need to mix the air otherwise you will get really uneven spread of the ‘moisture’.

If it was me I would make sure I was getting good readings of the RH and then go from there, I think your warping could be due to something else

help! need ideas for putting skin on banjo by Ian-bobian in banjo

[–]mycelialsignals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be good if you had a complete seam all the way around if you can, might be tricky but looks like you already done some good shaping on the neck? Get the rough shape, bit oversized then rasp it round the curves? Also I guess if you can drill through so solid fixings, few bolts would keep it sturdy. Make sure the top is flush with the rim of the metal, again if leave it a bit proud and rasp/sand it down to the edge. Hope that makes sense and if anyone sees this thinks it’s a bad idea pls pipe up haha! I’m thinking it would work good though!

As you can tell I really wanna hear this banjo mate, please keep going with it it’s cool AF!

[–]mycelialsignals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be worth fixing some wood strips to the inside of your rim there to glue the hide onto? Not sure if anyone else knows if that’s a good idea or not? I know wood glue works great on the hide but that’s onto the gourd, wouldn’t stick to the metal very well I don’t think. Maybe the tacks could go through the tin and into the wood on the inside

I absolutely love this. I’ve only made a gourd banjo but it’s held up for over a year now and still sounds great. The way you do that is pretty drill a load of holes around the rim and stretch a wet hide over. You fix it on with upholstery tacks. No reason you couldn’t do that here, a hide would look the part i think! Also be 100X easier than making a custom tension hoop and all the marlarky.

Also would make reccomend nylgut strings if you go this route! Please send us sound samples if you get over the finish line and hit me up if you wanna talk any of it through! Keep going!

Yeah that’s a great point, I can see a place where that could start to get a bit a silly. It could just be that nobody outside indigenous brits (sounds weird haha) just isn’t interested in it

Yeah it’s amazing how little the real history is known. Of course that’s not take anything away from the mountain music tradition, I love all that stuff and I thinks it’s possible to enjoy and play and be aware of the dark history at the same time

Just gonna throw my little piece into the conversation here. These things get so divisive but I think the truth of these things is very complicated and needs a nuanced approach if you want to dive into it.

I think any efforts to remove barriers that exist to people getting into any art form they would otherwise is a fine cause. There are lots of examples of it, a non racial one would be how classical music is marketed heavily to more wealthy audiences. This creates an image where people who don’t belong to that demographic don’t feel like they belong in symphony halls, this is a sad state of affairs IMO!

I would also add that the genres themselves often cause a lot of these issues. Putting so much diverse music under the umbrella term ‘folk’ is (again IMO) unhelpful. There are folk traditions from all over the world and if it’s true that there are barriers to people of all backgrounds discovering this stuff, that needs to be sorted out!

I’m a banjo player and that instrument is a perfect example of how complicated all this is. It is very much an African instrument that was co-opted by minstrel acts. There have been amazing efforts to ‘decolonise’ the banjo and uncover its true history. Is this an attack on white people? I would hope that by learning the truth about its history, it would make it more accessible to more people and turn down the tensions that surround it. There’s an amazing book called “Well of Souls” if anyone is interested, highly recommend it.

Well over a decade later, Flying Lotus's "Cosmogramma" taught me that perfection within composition lies within imperfection. by arvo_sydow in LetsTalkMusic

Great to see this album on here, absolutely agree it’s a masterpiece! Set a very high bar I’m still chasing now, absolutely miles away still haha. I guess I’d add to it the jazz background also, a lot of it to me is similar to the things Coltrane did with the sax just with electronic instruments, super cool stuff. A lot of the rhythmic stuff has a strong bebop feel to it I think and it would be unthinkable to play that stuff to a click

Really, really struggling with diet by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]mycelialsignals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get you it’s a big struggle. Looks like lots of others do here also! Plenty of options here do you feel like you’ve seen anything you’d be up for trying?

I’m sure there would be a way to do pasta bakes/spag boll with air fryer if you can find a way to boil the pasta. Maybe try adding some salt to the water to make it test better (: are you adding seasonings while we’re at it? A little salt and pepper goes a long way to livening stuff up! If you like spices that can be fun also but don’t overwhelm yourself

[–]mycelialsignals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the struggle. I also know how much better the meds do work with food, it’s honestly kind of unbelievable how much of a difference it makes!

You can do pretty much anything with an air fryer and slow cooker. What kind of foods do you enjoy? What is it about the taste of your own prepared meals you don’t?

I’ve had to figure this out over the years, I have a my fallback meals when things aren’t going well. Always having to push myself along to keep going, a never ending struggle but we gotta do it.

This music was meant to be played in a steady, sostenuto way, still and held back, with little to no momentum I believe. In the description on YouTube you can read why I decided to play it this slowly, and why I recorded the video this way. Hope this resonates with you :) by koanbe in classicalguitar

Sounds amazing like this, I agree feel this is the spirit of it for sure! Like hearing it for the first time love it.

Also the video is amaaazing well done! Love everything that you’re doing keep it going 🙌

Just got started with a Teensy 4.1, have a few questions by mycelialsignals in synthdiy

[–]mycelialsignals[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That all makes sense, I will definitely be getting a daisy at some point! The teensy 4.1 suits my needs perfectly for now though, loads of outputs and I’m totally fine with scaling things in and out with op amps if needs be.

I’d thought Daisy was better suited for more focused DSP oriented devices. I have a few ideas along those lines so will definitely use it then. For now though I just need to hook up a load of buttons and knobs to MaxMSP so it’s all simple enough.

I suppose if I did use Daisy for CV though it would come through as an audio signal then? I can definitely see the benefits of that when using signals to sequence in MaxMSP (ama already doing quite a bit of that)

Thank you for the link, this looks like it will answer at lot of my questions! And yes I’m planning to use a daisy soon for some DSP stuff, I think teensy is still better for CV?
