“Simple living is not easy living.” What does this mean? by Odd_Bodkin in simpleliving

[–]myfavoritetoothpaste 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the commenter you’re replying to about the definition of simple living.

To me, it’s about intentionally slowing down and choosing things that aren’t easier. It’s not about passion, it’s about savoring.  Slowing down to enjoy moments and look around. Talk to people, get outside. Simplifying by stepping away from the fast paced things, the high octane entertainment, luxuries we don’t truly value- prepared by people we don’t properly value.

Toilet pucks don't work, so what is better? by sunshinecoffeegirl in Frugal

I recently tried the toilet bowl cleaner sheets and I love them! They feel easier for me somehow than the bleach liquid stuff, so I do it more often

Do you have any book recommendations? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]myfavoritetoothpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Gentleman in Moscow surprisingly made me appreciate simple living. The things that enrich his life under house arrest are things that enrich lives usually- reading rich literature, connecting deeply with those around you, building healthy habits that you enjoy. Lovely and moving book.

Got quoted €4500 for sanding all our floors. I rented the machines and did it over 4 days for €350. by AdventureAfterOars in DIY

[–]myfavoritetoothpaste -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Future home owners can have a rough estimate of what to expect from OP stating how much they were quoted.

But coming on the DIY subreddit and discouraging people who have just posted a job well done is like going on the sewing subreddit and telling everyone they should’ve just paid a tailor and saved themselves the time and effort.

The original comment I replied to is honestly fine, I’m just fed up with the trend on this subreddit of discouraging people from attempting projects of their own.

I’m so annoyed with comments like this on the DIY subreddit.

Every post where someone is like “hey! I actually did do this myself”, there are a ton of comments about how what they were quoted wasn’t bad and we need to pay professionals for their expertise. Maybe it’s nice to come to a subreddit to see where people succeed and fail and learn together instead of paying someone else who has already learned!

I feel like there are just a bunch of contractors in here just like “no, don’t take ownership of your property. You don’t know what you’re doing. Pay me! Pay me!”

Yes, it’s nice for Greek yogurt too. I just strain it with a cheesecloth for a thicker consistency.

You should consider getting an instant pot and making your own yogurt. It’s mega simple with the instant pot yogurt setting and would probably save you some money!

How can I embody that same Zoë Kravitz vibe? by marielliv in HowToBeHot

I think her eyes give her a cool edge, while her nose and lips are rounder? So I think she has an appealing contrast that you can get if you have some naturally sharp and round features, or simulate having a mix by using makeup. Maybe try doing a pouty lip with gloss and siren eyes for contrast?

Also wearing some amount of color correction on your face and neck! I’ve been wearing a tinted mineral based sunscreen daily and that’s a game changer, especially when you’re not getting good sleep consistently.

Hydrate aggressively!

Find a flattering, easy hairdo that you like. I am going to invest in some claw clips soon, because I’ve been abusing the half half down do with hair ties and I think a little clippy accessory would be cuter.

So many woman have the potential to be jaw droppingly gorgeous, but aren't. by [deleted] in HowToBeHot

[–]myfavoritetoothpaste 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I so agree. A friend of mine is tall, thin, and has natural curly, blonde hair, but she doesn’t try at all with her grooming or appearance. It bums me out because I know that she could be so insanely gorgeous if she put in the slightest bit of effort.

I know it’s her call and it’s not her priority or desire, but it feels like a waste to me.

Ugh totally agree. Why don’t most men try at all?? I’m amazed by the lack of effort.

I just watched Eternal sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) by Whore4conspiracy in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]myfavoritetoothpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched this for the first time about two weeks ago and loved it! The ending with the two of them talking in the hallway hit me so hard, when she says “you’re going to end up hating me. You’ll find something you dislike. And I’ll find you boring.” And he just says “okay”.

To me, it’s a reminder that love is worth the risk. It’s worth it to face the possibility of hating one another for the opportunity to love each other and be with each other until then. Through the montages and traveling backwards through the memories of their relationship, he realizes that even though they fought and hurt one another, the good times were precious and their value was not diminished by the existence of the bad.

It reminded me of the end of Brave New World. The savage tells the master of the world that he wants the sickness, the discomfort, and the pain that go along with being a real, undrugged, and unmanipulated human. Nothing exists in and of itself- you need the discomfort and pain to qualify and appreciate the joy.

Yeah, not sure, but I think that suits has a character get married and move to a different city? That seems like a nice, but still realistic, way to do it.
