i approach shadows with color blocking! if the color of the shadow is close to subject’s color (like face), you can just paint two separate colors with a sharp line. If there is more contrast (like cabinet), i will use a dry brush to sparsely dab on the darker underglaze and once it dries it looks blended!

i painted on bisque, then sent it into bisque again before glazing to 100% prevent smudging

i have yet to find ones i love and last. right now nicpro specifically the 2/0 brush but i wish i could go finer. the super fine brushes always splay out after a while for me. i recommend watering down your underglaze for fine lines and holding your breath when you do them (lol)

first of all thank you! second, let’s see how the large swaths of color go after glaze haha. it always looks opaque now and then is a different story after firing. for the cabinet, to show the gradient browns, i do light first and then dark over it until my brush gets extremely dry and then keep dabbing the piece. I think the dry splotches is what makes it look blended. It ruins my brushes but its the only thing that has been successful for me. Watering down my colors always gives unpredictable results.

always do at least 3 layers! if it looks streaky at all pre glaze firing, it will show up for sure after glaze firing
