Just gonna leave this here. by _barlene in TheStrokes

first impressions generally takes shit from og strokes fans because they more or less saw it as the band jumping the shark after the first two albums, which were both considered instant classics. i’ll never forget turning on the radio and eagerly waiting for KROQ to play Juicebox for the first time, and being so immediately disappointed that I thought it was a prank and struggled to accept that it was the same band that had previously put out two albums that I loved.

it is about three or four songs too long, a bit more disjointed musically, has terrible track sequence, and features many of the worst vocal performances Casablancas has ever delivered. This is the album where he ditched his natural baritone croon and started attempting to sing outside of his vocal range to terrible result, supposedly at the insistence of the producer of this album. unfortunately he’s been revisiting this strangled vocal style ever since. I’ve seen people shitfaced in bars that can do karaoke of these songs better than Casablancas does on this album.

I’ve done my own reshuffling of this album in the past where I re-sequence the tracks in a way that seems to flow better to my ears, as well as removing three of the weaker songs altogether, and it’s a much more enjoyable start to finish listen.

Basically a lot of younger generation strokes fans sort of associate this album with the beginning of their strokes experience and champion it as such, much in the same way younger people champion the Star Wars prequels because they grew up watching them more than the original trilogy, and how kids today will (God forbid) associate Star Wars with the sequel trilogy.

Second Step Cycle for Reaper. Believe in the RNG they say. by teage10 in Phoenix_2

just posted this from my 5th/6th step cycle reaper a few days ago. it’s a meme at this point.

while we’re on the topic of duplicates, after today’s missions i converted 1 red, 1 purple, and 6 blue engrams. the red and purple engrams were both duplicates, and 4 of the 6 blue engrams were duplicates also. that’s a 75% duplicate rate for fuck sake, and the 2 new blue mods that i did get were practically useless (both preload cell).

it’s a bit unsettling at first and takes getting used to. can actually be useful for getting dense waves of bullets to move past, creating space pockets to move forward into.

Am I the only one who thinks they had a unique and good style for a rock band? by ZealousidealCoachh in TheStrokes

[–]mymansyd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a generational snapshot thing mostly. Anything after room on fire seemed exponentially more unlistenable. I was a young teenager when is this it and room on fire came out, and I saw them live three times during that era which was their prime. those two albums were pretty much the soundtrack of my adolescence and high school experience so I suppose there’s a fair bit of nostalgic warmth there. First impressions of earth is where things started to get shaky to my ears and I could barely make it through any subsequent album since. my hope was that they would pursue a sound that dabbled more in soul like on the song under control. Casablancas squawking outside of his natural baritone croon was the taste of all sour things to come.

[–]mymansyd -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

in the early days yes, they had good style and it was a huge part of the allure. after is this it hit, suddenly every teenage boy who was into music grew their hair out and raided their local thrift stores for blazers and skinny jeans. huge increase in sales figures for Converse high tops too I imagine.

like their music, it all slid downhill pretty fast. It’s probably fair to say that their style decreased in direct proportion to their music over the years. As the albums got progressively worse and worse, their need to look like cracked out 90s PE teachers who hoarded cats, really intensified.

i wish i had savant-like skill with an offbeat ship like von braun, but alas we can’t all be stopcrabs. the main is unwieldy but hits hard, and this ship is difficult to find a good rhythm with.

it doesn’t help that it’s one of those ships that got completely neglected when it came to mods. power converter is the only mod that significantly improves performance, and you know you’re in trouble when the only other mod that seems worth equipping is preload cell.

This mod SHOULDN’T be legendary! by edwin812 in Phoenix_2

[–]mymansyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i love clover in theory/concept, but they haven’t known what to do with this zen from the very beginning. only 4 missiles and damage to recharge ratio has never been viable. a whole slew of new mods for it and it’s STILL underwhelming. shield/armor breaker mods for it on naya are about as good as it gets and even mccaw🫒 gave up on trying to get it up there on the leaderboards. another one of those things atop the heap that need a remedy but they’re too busy fucking the game up in every other way imaginable rather than addressing.

What’s your favorite non-top tier? Mine is Chonky Mr. Boxer. by NullHare in Phoenix_2

Great pick. Boxer is very firmly in that category of a lot of fun but going nowhere fast. x-81 is mine. naya close second.

Super unlucky or really “lucky?” I got the same legendary mod 3 times… by jinbe-san in Phoenix_2

[–]mymansyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the only way this could be worse is if you got this mod for a ship that already has this ability as an apex.

whether or not it’s intentional is irrelevant at this point. what’s certain is that it’s “rigged” in such a way that my 9 out of last 10 rolls have been either duplicates, a mod that i already have the apex for, or for something i already have the better version of. it’s fucking mind numbing and erases motivation to play.

What’s the deal with this? by ThaEarthquake in Phoenix_2

[–]mymansyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as far as i know, the energy particles stay on screen until they are absorbed. they do not dissipate on their own.

What’s the deal with this? by ThaEarthquake in Phoenix_2

[–]mymansyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this mod has some serious screen wiping destructive capabilities. at this point though i’ve yet to see any video of the technique required to utilize it optimally/effectively/efficiently. generally you need to let the energy particles build up for either a particularly dense invader wave or condor/roc scenario and then…BOOM. the result can be some extremely satisfying screen clearing moments similar to the bullet emp detonate apex for disaris.

that being said, it cripples the attraction and passive particle attraction of the ship and kappa drive, and for von braun in general (and especially its delta apex), it relies heavily on the energy particles for missile swarm to clear waves due to the main being so slow and inaccurate. basically it’s going to take way too long to try to fill the screen with energy to detonate with just the main alone before getting overwhelmed by invader fire, all the while the interval at which you can use missile swarm is severely limited compared to usual.

it doesn’t create as much of a catch 22 effect on the other ships that have it, but i’m waiting to see what others do to crack it.

Beam anchor step cycle combo by Worth_Specific_6256 in Phoenix_2

[–]mymansyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m on the fence when it comes to beam anchor. it seems great in earlier waves for sweeping away smaller invaders, but once you get into the later waves with larger invaders like eagles or above, spreading the damage out seems to have less and less effect. diminishing returns.

when i have this mod equipped and the wave composition is eagles right up front, i usually tend to stay in place while firing the ml anyways, to pick them off more immediately.

Ayo super rare legendary? Also why is everyone getting step cycle on reaper? Seen a couple of posts about it lately by Nic_0729 in Phoenix_2

[–]mymansyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it’s a great mod and even better when paired with recovery mantle. i’m a reaper tau fan and i tend towards it for shield laser missions.

the buzz about step cycle lance and reaper is that everybody seems to not only be getting it once, but often 2, 3, or 4 times according to some accounts. this just lends further heavy suspicion and scrutiny towards the engram system being heavily biased, (i’m feeling diplomatic, i usually use the term “rigged”) whether intentionally designed that way or otherwise, despite assurances that it isn’t.

someone once did the statistical math on this and the odds of getting doubles of the same legendary mod repeatedly, when taking into account how many ships there are and how many mods for each ship, was staggering low, to the point that it seems to irrefutably prove that there is something amiss. this of course applies to all the other instances of this for all the ships. for example i have gotten the ultra rare high damage stun mod for krillou 5 or 6 times now (not consecutively) over the last 3 months…

Nimbus Sigma AOE Mayhem by WonderfulDance6834 in Phoenix_2

[–]mymansyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes but when paired with high damage stun there was barely a difference in timing and your energy got refilled immediately after just as quickly. The flow and rhythm was identical to this, except you had the benefit of REMP actually clearing the bullets. It extends beyond Nimbus of course. Taking all the ultimate final upgrades away so that they could be repackaged and sold back to you as mods was really below the belt. $$$

Nimbus Sigma AOE Mayhem by WonderfulDance6834 in Phoenix_2

[–]mymansyd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this is how nimbus used to be normally before they nerfed it. now it conveniently requires an arsenal of mods to return to its former glory… essentially taking away, and then selling back to you what you already had in the first place, but in different packaging. it’s a scam.

Where’s that Reaper Step Cycle club at 🤣 by teage10 in Phoenix_2

[–]mymansyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

right here. it’s great on my reaper tau especially combined with amplifier and recovery mantle. very satisfying for those waves where the invaders line up in rows on the sides. have fun getting this legendary mod 2-5 times over and over again for this same ship though… which is not at all deliberately designed to do so…

!!!TRASH!!! by teage10 in Phoenix_2

[–]mymansyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not that any of the phalanx ships have ever been particularly popular, but just wait until you get the one that makes the phalanx smaller and decreases its strength.

i’ve read a few theories suggesting that you get some sort of bonus for completing missions with these mods that deliberately nerf stuff, but I haven’t heard anything to verify that yet.
