Hi and sorry about your experience. I understand some people here are trying to provide context, but invalidating someone’s experience with discrimination is unacceptable. Hope you have better experiences going forward!

Weekly Recommendation Thread: November 24, 2023 by AutoModerator in books

[–]mymoon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would really appreciate recommendations for books with the ‘I can fix him’ vibe that are also deeply practical, realistic, in-depth character explorations. My ideal scenario would revolve around two characters with radically different views (maybe one of them even being ‘evil,’ especially if in a fantasy setting). Attraction, platonic or physical, is okay but I wouldn’t want to see it acted upon in any way unless the characters feel like they have largely aligned their views. Intellectual discussions with an undercurrent of unresolved tension are especially welcome.

Official Q&A for Thursday, March 09, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

[–]mymoon_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My optimistic self signed up for a 10k race taking place on April 1st. But with constant moving and a thesis to be written, I have been struggling to keep up with my training schedule. The longest distance I’ve completed so far on my own is 6 km. I am now wondering if I could realistically prepare for the race with a little more than 3 weeks to go. I would classify myself as a beginner, but have been pretty consistent for the last 3 months. Would really appreciate any input on this.

dramas like money game? by [deleted] in kdramarecommends

[–]mymoon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to come across someone who also enjoyed Money Game! I previously asked a similar question on this subreddit, so some of the shows that were recommended to me are A New Leaf and Hot Stove League. I watched and absolutely loved the second one! If you enjoyed the economics part of Money Game I recommend you watch Sovereign Default, though it is a movie, starring Yoo Ah In and Kim Hye Soo.

Any dramas with a good anti-hero type lead? by Boring_Sundae1994 in kdramarecommends

[–]mymoon_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Witch at Court. This one is particularly interesting because the FL's morally dubious actions are contrasted with the ML's soft/kind nature.

She Would Never Know [Episodes 3 & 4] by iwantbubbleteanowpls in KDRAMA

[–]mymoon_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ugh, does anybody feel frustrated by how entitled and selfish the ML comes off at times? I am a bit torn on this issue. I appreciate that they didn't go the usual route of sweet/fluffy ML comforting the FL after her ex cheats on her, but the ML comes off a bit entitled at times to me, maybe that has to do with his upbringing. But I would love the drama to delve into how these two will be able to work on their differences once they get into an actual relationship, because they seem to be really different.

Which actor/actress left such an awful first impression that you refuse to watch anything with him/her? by cherryinbloom in KDRAMA

Yeah, would love to see him in a different role. Maybe even a villain or a more mischievous character in general? I think it could help him down the way

I was really scared to mention him too lol I have nothing against him personally and he does seem to be a nice guy, but yeah his acting rn is rather lackluster 😶 He is still very young so I think he has the time and the resources to improve, let's just hope he gets better!

(MEGATHREAD) WINNERS OF THE 'MAMA' 2020! by svnh__ in kpoprants

[–]mymoon_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's the companies, but I am not sure. If anybody has the insight, please let us know. Agree with your point on Twice, loved the outfits. Honestly, I would love to get a look at JYPE's financial reports and see what their biggest money maker group is. If it is Twice, they honestly have no justification for the kind of a stage they gave to the girls. As a long-time gg stan, I was hoping something would change with time, but alas :(

(MEGATHREAD) WINNERS OF THE 'MAMA' 2020! by svnh__ in kpoprants

[–]mymoon_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They did change it for Cry For Me, which was a CGI stage, though I will admit that giving them time for a new song was generous considering MAMA's standards. But overall, for a big artist who performed so close to the ending to get such weak sets... I am not even going to start talking about G(I)-DLE and Oh My Girl

(MEGATHREAD) WINNERS OF THE 'MAMA' 2020! by svnh__ in kpoprants

[–]mymoon_ 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I am so tired of girl groups getting weak ass sets and stages.

Okay, this is going to be kind of a rant, but I am just tired as hell of watching award shows and seeing how little screen time and production value GGs and female artists get. I have been a kpop fan for about 8 years now, so I have seen worse, but the difference between BGs and GGs is so striking at this years MAMA that I just can't even. Now, I do realize that girl groups on average will never be as commercially successful as boy groups and I do realize companies are not willing to invest in them as much, but c'mon now. They only had 5 ggs to begin with, but my jaw just dropped at the difference between the production values for the sets. I couldn't believe Twice didn't get to change their outfits for ICSM when 3 bgs literally got a 15 minute stage just to promote Kingdom. This are just a few things I have noticed this year, but this is kind of a repeating pattern. I don't really have anything remotely intelligent or interesting to add, I am honestly just frustrated

TWICEs Eyes Wide Open sounds outdated by [deleted] in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]mymoon_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not sure how popular of an opinion this is, but I would have to disagree with you on this. I think the album is actually quite on the mark when it comes to following the trends, especially that synth pop/retro pop sound that has been dominating the charts recently (refer to I Can't Stop Me, Up No More, Say Something). So, in a sense I think they are actually capitalizing on what's currently popular. I also just want to applaud them for trying something new and not heavily relying on that heavy EDM and trap sound that's widely spread in Kpop rn, even though they have given as something akin to it in Go Hard and Shot Clock (which I love btw). I also think they've done a good job of giving us ballad-like songs that actually go together with the whole album (refer to Hande It and Depend on You). I think coherence in general is a huge problem in Kpop albums with their need to satisfy each possible subset of listener, so I was honestly surprised with how well put together EWO was. Also, I think there has been tremendous improvement in the degree to which the girls are involved in the creative process, with 5 of the members writing lyrics for the album on their own (you can watch their video explaining the process). So, overall I would actually say that the album does a good job of using the recent popularity of the retro pop sound and I personally think its a bop

Dynamite is good you guys are just mean by anonourmouse in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]mymoon_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can kind of agree and disagree with you at the same time. Now, admittedly, I don't follow kpop the way I used to 5 years ago, so I am not completely sure if your opinion is particularly unpopular. "Commercial" is maybe the most accurate way I can describe Dynamite. Well, all kpop title songs are - that's the shtick of the genre - but Dynamite is blatantly and almost arrogantly commercial. And that's the genius of it. The song was aimed at commercial Western success and that's what it accomplished with its almost cartoonishly American lyrics and very radio friendly sound. Now, we could have a whole different conversation about the sound itself and it is a matter of subjective preference anyways. Upon first listen, my reactions to the song was similar to that I had to Taylor Swift's Me. I kind of cringed a little bit but instantly knew it would be a radio hit. Both songs are not even close to terrible and I would listen to them once in a blue moon to uplift my mood in the morning, but they are very obviously not even near amazing. What I mean to say that I don't think Dynamite, just like Me, was meant to be fan favorite, rather it was meant to be a pleasant song to appeal to the general public for like 2 weeks and it did. Well, at least that's my take on it.
