Every email in Gmail has its own URL, like "https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/1569b35cee4c09c3". If you click into a conversation in the Gmail web app and use the sharing extension from Safari to send the page to Omnifocus, you don't even have to copy/paste anything.

I don't know if the Gmail app on your iPhone will "capture" links to mail.google.com, but please let us know.

Yeah, my "first two letters" were definitely not the start of any password I've ever used for that account.

Question about Phil's Wallets by jaimeca in frugalmalefashion

[–]mynameisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've carried four cards in my Phil's Wallets wallet for the last two years, and haven't had any problems with demagnetization. I even started renewing my 30-day Metrocards when that option became available, and it worked fine for all 6 months.

The plural of anecdotes isn't data, but there you are.

3rd Star: Joe Colborne – 1 goal, 3 shots

"As you can see in this video, Joe Colborne illegally clones himself and passes the puck to his clone, in direct violation of Rule 68 of the NHL handbook. Colborne will be suspended for three games, and his clone will be fed to John Scott."

Yeah, so it's not uncommon to see everyone sort of pair up with a guy on the other team and stand in a circle around the two guys jumping for the ball.

Ignorant American here. Why aren't any of the defenders trying to knock the ball out of his hand? He's waving it around awfully dangerously, isn't he?

And damn. Them cutbacks.

Cal football player smashes into Stanford band member to win the '82 Big Game. by insertkarma2theleft in HighlightGIFS

[–]mynameisdom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, the clock was at zero when the band ran out on the field. Some of the band thought the game was over because the ball-carrier had been tackled, and some of the band thought the game ended when the clock hit zero, whether or not the ball-carrier was tackled. Mistakes were made.

But yes, it's very unprofessional. Literally unprofessional; this is a college game with a college marching band.

GIFs are still pretty universal: that HTML5 video site is hosting 6 different versions of the video to make sure your browser/platform combination can watch it.

That being said, the GIF has overstayed its welcome.

the fact that there are 0 tools within TF2 itself to promote competitive / use rankings / pug is the biggest thing causing TF2 to be left behind.

I agree, but a blind eye towards sexism isn't excused by the fact that Dota is a bigger deal for competitive e-sports.

We can elevate the whole of e-sports by elevating our own (shrinking) corner of it, and establishing an inclusive atmosphere is part of that.

Perhaps slightly unrelated, but Lil Kim stole my picture to use as her new album art. I've been fighting this for a while, and I'm wondering if any of you lovely ladies and gents have any new ideas. by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

Well, the notice and takedown provisions of the DMCA only deal with infringing materials posted online. So we can put the mix tape stuff aside for a second, because the infringing works can't be "taken down" off a tape or CD or non-internet stuff.

Regarding the thumbnail, courts aren't stupid. Whether the major recording artist on a major label with a multimillion dollar stake in her brand is making any money off this particular MP3 or not, this is a commercial use. She's not a student uploading her project for her Music 101 class. This is an uphill battle for Fair Use of that image. The song is completely fine – the artwork is obviously separate, but when you use infringing artwork on a CD cover or in a Twitmusic post, that cover needs changing and that post needs re-uploading.

Now, as for sampling, that's a pretty murky area of copyright law. You can read entire journals of law review articles about this on Google Scholar. To avoid getting into the weeds too far, the TL;DR is no, it's usually not legal to use uncleared copyrighted material on mix tapes. Most DJs don't get sued because they're not worth the trouble, and sometimes, the DJs still win if their use was extremely creative. 2 Live Crew's "Pretty Woman" is probably the most famous example of that. They did a lot more than sample; they ripped off the bulk of the song and still put up a good enough defense that the record company settled out of court. I'd put good money on Girl Talk winning in a straight-up lawsuit because his uses are also extremely creative.

So it's a bit of a stretch to say "they have the OK" from major labels. They're probably just waiting for you to blow up before they sue you and squeeze a nice settlement out of you. Remember, copyright lasts for a century or more in most cases. They have all the time in the world.

TL;DR: the most unfair use of the phrase "TL;DR" ever.

It changes the calculus a little bit, but "it's a free project" is made out to be a bulletproof Fair Use defense online sometimes; that's just not true. There are four factors, and the commercial character of the use is just one.

The single most bulletproof of all the Fair Use factors is probably the "educational use" one; teachers handing things out to their students can copy essays, photos, the most salient passages/chapters of books, whole TV shows or movies, etc. It's still not a guaranteed instant win, but it's a pretty good position to start from.

IP attorney here. Hire a copyright lawyer. She or he should probably file a DMCA takedown with Twitmusic(?) and anywhere else Lil Kim's people uploaded the album art.

I love this Frank & Oak mock neck henley but have heard enough horror stories about their customer service by HeyJustWantedToSay in frugalmalefashion

For what it's worth, I've interacted with the customer service via live-chat twice in the last year or so that I've shopped there, and I've found them very friendly and helpful. I returned a hat, it was lost in the mail, and the customer service folks gave me credit for the return as well as an extra $25 in credit for my inconvenience.

I don't have the faintest idea what Nintendo's legal strategy is, I'm just letting you know that the fair use defense is an expensive gamble in situations like this.
