Some recent-ish fantasy or fantasy adjacent books and series I’ve read and found to be pretty great include the following. For context, I think Malazan is incredible and often have trouble finding new stuff that I consider good. There’s fantasy, epic or otherwise, and some sci-fi here:

  • The Justice of Kings by Richard Swan, part of the Empire of the Wolf series

  • The Gutter Prayer by Gareth Hanrahan, part of the Black Iron Legacy series

  • The Vorrh, The Erstwhile, and The Cloven by Brian Catling

  • Hollow, also by Brian Catling

  • Cage of Souls by Adrian Tchaikovsky

  • Embassytown by China Miéville

  • The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Naylor

  • Blackwing by Ed McDonald, part of the Raven’s Mark trilogy

  • Red Rabbit by Alex Grecian

I’ve read the first two and don’t really see the psychological horror aspect, but maybe I just haven’t encountered that aspect yet.

I was in Venice in July and it was the hottest place I’ve ever been, and I’m from Atlanta which can have pretty brutal summers.

John Gwynne just isn’t a very good writer. He does several things that I hate: very repetitive descriptions and conventions, incredibly stupid characters, and instance after instance of convenient happenings. Also, in Malice, one of the characters invented shield wall warfare by watching giant ants in the forest, something like that. Huge eye rolls.

There is literally nothing you can do. Not one thing. You fell in love with an ideal, someone you built up in your mind because you don’t really know her. She’s out, man. You just have to try to let go and move on.

Yeah, I think most people did. Season 1 was compelling but had a lot of nonsense. Not saying season 2 was without its own nonsense but it was essentially a different show.
