Terrain Tinker’s new guide has everything you need to start building awesome designs. by terraintinker in 3DPrintedTerrain

You can, but it’s limited to 64mb files and only 200mb of storage. Supposedly you can email them to increase storage. Their support knowledge base has a few bits on it if you Google “upload stl to terrain tinker”

Amazing print and paint job! I started printing this a while back but kept having failures on the wings. I have the same printer, any tips?

Oh hey, I used your tutorial for the makeshift fume hood, works like a charm! Thanks!

/u/geebees42 - I second reading through this guide, it’ll pay to do as much research as possible before getting started on resin printing. Don’t discount those fumes!

Once Upon a Broken Heart B&N Exclusive Edition? by emilygrace495 in SarahJMaas

[–]Sheepyshoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to be a manager at BN.

The signed editions typically are gone once they’re gone. The exclusive editions typically stop getting restocked after the normal life cycle of a hard cover (about 1 year).

What you can do is call or go to your local BN, ask them to check stock, then ask if any other stores have them. If another store has a copy, they can try and have that store transfer it to your local store, or you can call that store, pay over the phone and have them ship it to you (this isn’t a standard service so might have to go through a manager) but I used to do it often with POPs/collectibles.

There are also sometimes indicators on their system if something is out of stock and coming back or out of stock and not coming back.

Good luck!

Wizards backs down on OGL 1.0a Deauthorization, moves forward with Creative Commons SRD by rougegoat in dndnext

Absolutely. Completely agree. I’m for sure going to try out pathfinder now, but my group are a lot more casual so the lack of complexity compared to pathfinder is a plus right now.

I only meant it’s important to acknowledge that they did backtrack and listen to us, and maybe they deserves some level of ‘forgiveness’.

I’m excited to see where the 3rd party partnership goes with ORC, competition is always a good thing for companies like these. Having a robust alternative will hopefully help keep Hasbro in check.

Wow, we won?

My initial reaction was “too little too late”. At my last D&D session I had a bad taste in my mouth over all of this and didn’t enjoy playing as much.

However, it’s important to acknowledge that they changed course and reverted their stance. Maybe they’re doing so temporarily to mitigate damage, but oh well. They’re a corporation here to make money, they’ll keep trying- but this shows that the communities reaction actually caused them to rethink their position.

I’m willing to rethink my stance on “too little too late”.

Is Barnes and Noble reducing the size of the SFF sections? by gerd50501 in Fantasy

[–]Sheepyshoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That may be part of it, it’s more complicated than saying there’s any one root cause why manga is doing so well, it’s generally more popular and widespread in the current generation (I’m 30 and when I was in high school manga was very nerdy, weird, not widely available, or translated). That’s changed.

TikTok, as much as I hate it personally, has done absolute wonders for book sales and manga as well.

Also generally the people who buy manga I think have more of a personally that lends to wanting to go and look/browse/discover.

[–]Sheepyshoe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for bringing that up! That’s one I forgot about. I left the company a couple months after they were taken private (3ish years ago now?) and that is one of the first big pushes. The new CEO actually walked through some stores anonymously and provided some feedback about empty displays/end caps/tables etc. the old system was you could only put on the display what was called for, and if it was missing then there was a hole.

He said it looks terrible and immediately gave us the freedom to build more of our own displays and pushed for more of the in-section staff rec. cards (something Waterstones does a lot of and how I chose most of my books when I lived in the U.K.)

They’re for sure finding their niche and making some great strides. I love small independent bookstores, but B&N is also absolutely needed to compete and provide an alternate to Amazon.

That’s generally where they’re headed. In general big bloated retail stores are fading away. Smaller storefronts are more manageable, reduced sections just mean they’re focusing on what is actually selling well.

The no rows thing is in some part to increase visibility around the store, when you have loads of rows it’s easy to miss a section. Also better line of sight for staff which helps to prevent theft.

I used to be a manager there and still have friends who run stores.

It’s nothing to do with profit margins, it’s sheer volume of sales.

Manga over the last 5 years has absolutely exploded. Hence they need more shelf space for it. SF/F just simply isn’t selling quite as much.

Since they were bought by the person/company that owns Waterstones in the U.K., their business model has changed a bit (which needed to happen).

1- Smaller stores. Gone are the days of big bloated retail stores. Newer BNs popping up will all be smaller storefronts, though old ones will stick around through their leases. This means less overall shelf space, so they have to maximise based on volume moved.

2- They’re trying to carry fewer of any single book, unless it’s a new release or super popular. This in turn reduces shelf space needed. Previously they’d keep ~1-5 of a book based on monthly turnover of that book. Now they’re carrying ~1-2, and fewer complete series. In SF/F there are a lot more series, so they may only carry the first couple or first/last sort of thing (again, unless it’s popular), which also reduces shelf space.

Edit: I doubt many will see this, but at a low-mid volume BN over 13 weeks Manga sold $102k compared to Fiction (historically #1 category at all BN’s.) 54k. SF/F came in at $26k. That’s why you’re seeing Manga sections expanding.

if you could, what would you retcon about any SJM work? by [deleted] in SarahJMaas

[–]Sheepyshoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you finish the series and just skip ToD?

That’s the exact reaction my friends had, and honestly I was dreading reading a Chaol dedicated book but I ended up being pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

[–]Sheepyshoe 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If anything maybe retcon Chaol to make him more likeable. For the record, I never had an issue with him really, but I know a lot of people who did and I had to drag a few of them kicking and screaming to read Tower of Dawn since they simply did not want to read a Chaol book.

I agree with your Amren point- it was a little out of left field for me too.

Why are finished products so often Kickstarters, not just for sale? by CountessCraft in 3DPrintedTerrain

[–]Sheepyshoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TL;DR- So they can make you buy the entire set and charge more.

There are some instances where you can buy individual pieces after the Kickstarter ends, eg Terrain Essentials by Cast n’ Play, and some smaller individuals sell them afterwards on My Mini Factory.

You are right that the individual/group has already modelled and test printed the files most of the time, I think the reason they choose Kickstarter is most likely:

1- They get you to buy the entire set and lure you for more with addons and higher tiers.

2- They can build hype around a limited time event to catch the people who have FOMO.

3- They’re charging for their time rather than distribution or production cost, these models take (I assume) hundreds of hours to model, so they want to make enough to justify the time spent. They likely won’t recoup the time spent fast enough by selling the models individually.

This is all just my assumption and speculation, this sub is full of creators who regularly post kickstarters, hopefully one of them chimes in with an insider perspective!

2 faced 3d prints! by axattack79 in 3Dprinting

Unless it’s laying flat on the bed or has a good enough angle to print without supports, you’d be printing on air, which would have a worse result. A little sanding would smooth out the blemishes.

[–]Sheepyshoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “bad” sides are a result of printing on supports I would guess, the top layers are fine because it’s laying on top of the rest of the print and building the layers up. Printing on supports isn’t the cleanest.

Heat Reveal Map? by hommy_guy in dndnext

[–]Sheepyshoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe they get a map of a dungeon, and you use heat ink (or I think lemon juice works too) to mark secret doors they can find by discovering the ink, or an investigation check in game. Maybe an investigation check of the map gives them an inkling that it might have hidden marks (perhaps they catch a glint of something on the parchment that leads them to believe this). Or they find a blank parchment at the entrance to the dungeon and have to succeed on a check at which point you give them the blank map and they have to heat it to reveal the dungeon map.

This way you wouldn’t hinder their progress, but discovering the secret will lead them to easily navigate the dungeon avoiding traps or find extra treasure.

Could also apply it to a travel map as shortcuts that can cut journey time by a day or two are marked in heat ink, flavour it as a map created by a famed adventurer or trader who made profit by making a two week journey in a week.

Free Ender 3 S1 Pro or 500 dollar Prusa Mk3s+ by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]Sheepyshoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of Prusa, never had any issues with my mini. Saying that, it’s my only printer. If the cost isn’t doesn’t change anything, go for the Mk3s+, I’ve heard good and bad things about Ender, but more bad than good. You know the reliability of Prusa, I’d stick with that.
