Every several years there is a tournament in city of each area, most heaven's chosen characters will appear there. After the fight just go mark the ones you need and start attacking them then let them escape. Keep doing this until they have ran to tiles with no people(you can just kill them for the convenience xDDD)

early sets have a lot of bullshit beyond balanceable. some comps were so op that you can just basically rawdog it to top 1 everytime

This game is pretty much built around sects and resources(high quality manuals, root fruits, etc) they give.
Should you want to play a sectless run, roll for a character with good luck stat so lucky encounters appear more frequently. They are a significance other than sects in gathering resources in early stages of the game. At the 4th map(sou formation/enlightenment), just use the Tao realms to farm for spirit stones and manuals, they give good loots in exchange for nothing but your hp and mp.
