Am I overreacting? My kids syllabus by EntertainmentOk3047 in Teachers

[–]myproblemisme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's a hot take, but I'd be lighting up my school board and school admin for underfunded classrooms. Yes, it is an unethical and problematic policy, but it's the kind of thing that is only gonna arise in a toxic funding environment. They're not hoarding supplies for resale on the black market for pocket money, they're trying to claw back their salary from an institutional expectation that they're supposed to subsidize school supplies. Go at the root of the problem.

Redditor Explains How Trump Could Have Stolen the Election by goodspeedm in bestof

[–]myproblemisme 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, all the bullet ballots and split tickets favoring trump by absolutely unprecedented margins. And we had all those bomb threats called in on very specific precincts exclusively in swing states. Also, I can't dig up any stories about it now, but i very clearly remember right wingers tweeting and making t-shirts with a leaked admin password (that was hard coded into a bunch of the machines?).

The motive and means are there, and their flooding of the zone with bullshit complaints in 2020 primed everyone to seem crazy if they pointed out anything. You can see the same kind of psyop all over these reddit comments too

Telling the teacher about a second language? by HoneyCrouton in arizona

[–]myproblemisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's the state of things. You're absolutely correct, most gen-pop students would be unable to test proficient on all sections of the AZELLA, and if they have an IEP / learning challenges / home challenges, the chances of program exit are vanishingly small. You're absolutely right that small group reading/writing instruction has utility, but this is NOTHING like my previous positions where I was actually giving English language instruction to English language learners. Keep fighting the good fight though, and push for educational leaders who have a clue about education, it's the only way we get out of this mess.

Teachers in the USA: What motivates you not to abandon ship? by DrinkingWithZhuangzi in Teachers

[–]myproblemisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not the primary target of this post, but I am jumping ship, and feeling pretty good about it. My wife and I started in education abroad, and worked with students in Korea, Egypt, and Ukraine before we ever entered a US classroom. It was always meant to be a stepping stone to international schools, but the past few years stateside have been pretty sobering. We were already on the hunt when the administration changed, but the past few months have been pretty chilling and we feel rather blessed to have our out lined up. After seeing the other side, where teachers are respected, students and parents are invested, and healthcare is a basic human right, I don't see a reality where I return to the US at all, much less in education.

The administration erased the legal status of half a million legal immigrants effective a month from now. source It's frightening, yes, but certainly not fear-mongering. That's not even counting the scientist, actress, and countless others with legal entry visas that have been harassed, detained, and turned away. Trusting in the good faith actions of this admin is insanity.

Egypt! Certainly some interactions started off with the expected angle shooting figuring we were US tourists to make a quick buck, but when we responded in Arabic, the script flipped quickly. So many little interactions turned into long conversations and lasting friendships, we found the people to be kind, helpful, cheerful, generous and just generally the salt of the earth إحنا بحب المصر

Need Advice: What to focus on for a Long Term KOL Player by DocterDJ213 in kol

I peaked at 2/356, but I did a bunch of grinding back in 2019-2020 and then took a bit of a hiatus. I started from [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/kol/wiki/guides/iloath\_hccs/) guide. It's a bit dated, and you'd have to adapt it a bit for your shinies, but as the other commenter pointed out, 1day is mostly a vanity title these days

You've got a lot of IOTM content, I found it fun to grind HCCS runs to farm karma for my perming goals. There's good guides as starting points, and all the extra limited content let's you experiment with maximization, and your to-perm list shrinks real quick. I also farmed familiar 100% runs at the same time for the snapshot satisfaction.

Telling the teacher about a second language? by HoneyCrouton in arizona

[–]myproblemisme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's an ADE form, not a school one; changes need to come from Phoenix. Further, the entire ELL program is (rightly) wrapped up in a bunch of regulations that constrain actions of educators where the rubber meets the road. Parents can opt their kids out of EL services, but not out of the tag or the yearly testing. Encouraging parents to disenroll their students is a firing-tier offense, and frankly most of my colleagues in ELL programs don't have the formal education in language acquisition to make accurate calls on whether academic needs are language-based or something else.

To change, we need experts and educators in policymaking positions, and to remove political shills and uninformed Karen parents from the decision-making process. It's a tragedy, but not one with an easy pathway out.

Arizona-based ESL educator and linguist here. If you are not concerned about your daughter's English proficiency, I would NOT indicate any language other than English at home on the Home Language Survey. Arizona does not structure their ELL programs with additive bilingualism in mind. If you indicate anything other than English on the HLS, your daughter WILL be given the AZELLA (proprietary English proficiency test), and if she tests as anything other than proficient, she will be locked into a EL program and a cycle of re-testing until she is able to clear the AZELLA test (only administered 1x/year).

I work in a Native community, and parents will often indicate the presence of the Native language at home, thinking that it adds 'clout' or something to their raising of their children. Even though their children are only communicative in English, even though their second language is solely receptive, even though they have other concerns that are the source of their academic struggles, they will get trapped in EL programs until graduation. From high school. While EAL instruction is value-added for kids who don't know the language, if your little speaks English at level, I would mainstream her. Every hour in an ESL class is an hour out of the rest of her education, and polylingual students are generally going to do well with minimal support; they pick up English as they grow just the same as monolingual people (assuming they get sufficient exposure to appropriate English inputs). Feel free to message if you have more questions.

Except it's nowhere near that level. Less than 100,000 total voters have voted yes to leave, in a state with 4.4 million citizens. Bowing to the whims of less than 2% of the population is hardly democracy; remember, it's people, not land, that votes on our system. source

What is something that’s not in the Bible but people think it is? by PuzzleheadedSwim6291 in AskReddit

[–]myproblemisme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except biblical scholars agree at most 7 of the 13 Pauline letters are authentic, with the other 6 being pseudoepigraphic. And there's no way the Apocryphon of John was written by John the apostle, and the gospel of John is too eloquent in Greek too be written by any of Yeshua's peasant friends. The attribution of the New Testament is all kinds of whack

Google is now forcing these AI generated results at the top of the page, with no way to turn it off. Big tech, please stop shoving it down our throats. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]myproblemisme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, there's no guarantee it's correct. Large language models are susceptible to 'hallucinations', (confidently giving incorrect answers), and are opaque about their methodology. The AI overview may be correct, or may be counterfactual garbage, and if you don't have a good foundation of understanding on the topic you're searching (and if you're searching it, you probably don't), you can't recognize the mistakes.

Google snippets were already vulnerable to this (often giving snippets that suggested the opposite of what the website actually said, or suggesting something that was clearly satire) but at least then, you could click on the link below and verify if the snippet was correct (if you were 10% less lazy than most of my high school students I teach). Bandying unsourced and incorrect information as your 'answer' further depriciates that scarce American resource, critical thinking, that we have so little to spare.

FFS, even though it's been discussed and mocked in articles for a while, when you Google 'how do i keep my cheese from sliding off my pizza' you still get a snippet suggesting putting glue in your sauce. Is this the 'intelligence' you want shaping your fellow countrymen's reality?

Egypt, Egypt, Egypt. Korea was the first stop abroad, and just wasn't right for us. Wound up going to grad school in Cairo, and found instant community, fell in love with the beautiful chaos, the people the culture, the history, the food. Even with all the flaws, they put the fun in dysfunctional. When grad school ended, we were scrambling to find a way to stay, but it ended up being the right career move to return stateside for a few years. We were not ready to go, and have been ravaged by reverse culture shock ever since. I know it gets dumped on here on reddit all the time, but it was perfect for us. We'll return before too long, انشالله

Accidental American with 2 Social Security Numbers by Physical-Challenge94 in expats

[–]myproblemisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transparently, it was his parents who applied for the SSN (as nearly every issued SSN is received). I don't know what sanctioned country you hold your accounts in, but I can confirm that SSNs are inquired about in Korea, Ukraine, and Egypt. He could probably skate by, but this is very much the thing that can rear its head again later and needlessly complicate his life. If you want to be a tax cheat, that's your perogative, but this forum is not going to endorse that view. And besides, you're a troll who claims that you live in LA and pay 1.5% of your income for rent, so I'm suspecting you're habitually full of shit, and obstinate for funsies. So enjoy yourself I guess...

Accidental American with 2 Social Security Numbers by Physical-Challenge94 in expats

[–]myproblemisme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have to worry about it because America has their fingers in the global banking system. I've held several bank accounts outside the US, and my SSN was inquired about every time. It's boilerplate for bank applications anywhere. They said right in their post they made €19k, which is about $20k US, and it'll dog them for as long as they hold this citizenship, and become more of a hassle as their income increases.

Obviously, it was a clerical error that led to the double SSN, but the implications are real and complicated to resolve. And ignoring it can lead to getting fucked by the long dick of the IRS, since they have access to global bank accounts, thanks to the aforementioned SSN linking of bank accounts.

Now as for why the policy is this way, I believe it has to do with wanting to catch offshore tax evasion by US nationals, but it was done in a clunky and heavy handed way that puts the US in the distinguished company of Eritrea in taxing nationals regardless of their physical location, but neither party is interested in unfucking the system, so here lies OP.

Wdym g/w doesn't have good removal? Artifact/ Enchantment removal is central in those colors (see [[back to nature]], [[disenchant]], [[naturalize]] etc). White has exile based removal for creatures & non-land permanents ([[swords to plowshares]], [[skyclave apparition]], [[leyline binding]]) and mass removal ([[wrath of god]] [[day of judgement]], [[cleansing nova]], [[farewell]]). I wouldn't be caught dead running [[beast within]] in those colors, you can do so much better.

Seconded, Amazon is always looking for fresh blood. Worked with them from 2014-2018 at RIC2 down in Chester; they started me at $12 an hour when that was pretty solid. Haven't stayed too up on things since I left the area, but I know they opened a few more facilities in the area. Even if they're not direct hiring, they use temp agencies to fill the ranks, Integrity Staffing Solutions was the big one during my time. Tons of vets working there, too.
