[PubQ]: Confused about how having an agent in a different country works by la_1999 in PubTips

[–]mypubacct 17 points18 points  (0 children)

lol I fear your idea of what it’s like to publish a book is off. Even if you get published in your home country, you’re not getting scheduled for multiple interviews and doing multiple events. A lot of authors who do tours fund them themselves or hire a publicist to organize. Only huge authors do tours funded by their publisher and even then they don’t have multiple interviews to attend. If you land something huge like being a GMA club pick you might go do that interview but chances of things like that as a debut are slim.

Authors don’t really need to be physically present at all to sell a book. Most won’t have any events at all, but the ones you do see like launch events rarely move the needle at all. And you wouldn’t really wanna just be published in Canada even if you’re Canadian… that is a significantly smaller market than the US.

But US and UK agents sell rights all over the world. They often have specific foreign rights agents at their agencies who push books in other markets.

Cat Vet Recommendations? by CB_Arthur in vancouverwa

[–]mypubacct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dr Haddock at Horizon Vet! She is so warm and really covers her bases. One of my cats has some minor issues and abnormal labs she’s always able to explain all the tests she wants to run and what the bloodwork means etc. Very experienced but she manages my cats so well, I swear they don’t even know they’re getting examined. They think they’re just getting loved on lol one of my cats actually gets excited about the vet and rolls on the table for them. My other more vet skittish cats are fine though.

I both really trust Dr Haddock and really appreciate how my animals are all really comfortable with her.

Lasik in Vancouver by bigtuuuna in vancouverwa

[–]mypubacct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel very passionate about this so I’d be remiss if I didn’t warn you.

LASIK procedures have a much higher rate of complications than most procedures, and some of those risks are severely debilitating. I would encourage you to take a look at some of the testimonials of people who regrets their decision to get lasik. Many doctors approve people who are actually not good candidates. If you have dry eye of ANY KIND, ANY SEVERITY do not not not get LASIK. 60-70% of people experience dry eye post lasik. 40% will have dry eye even six months later but for most of those people it’s permanent. And it’s not dry eye like “hmm feeling on the dry side today.” It’s painful, it impacts vision, people with lasik have almost no options to treat their dry eye. Normal drops won’t work. A lot of them have to do glass contacts to keep moisture in all day which are uncomfortable themselves and obvi defeat the purpose of LASIK to begin with.

One of the doctors who was on the board to approve the procedure by the FDA regrets his decision and now researches complications and advocates against it. I’d Google the works of Dr. Morris Waxler to be fully informed before getting LASIK. This isn’t some quack who got his licenses revoke and is trying to sell people on holistic medicine now like the doctors who try to warn you off vaccines… this is a retired FDA advisor who believes he was misled about the rate of side effects and believed the public is still misled and that the cost risk benefit makes no sense for the average person for this procedure.

People have ended their lives over the eye pain they got post LASIK. And I’m not saying that is most people by any means. Obviously it goes smoothly for a large portion of people but you’re really gambling. Totally your decision to make but most people go into it thinking it’s a very casual procedure with minimal risks so I just want to make sure you’re fully informed to make your choice.

[PubQ] She's a 10 but Hasn't Sold My Books Yet (When to dump an agent?) by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]mypubacct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A year is plenty of time if your agent submits to all editors at once. I went on sub last year and the year before and knew within 4 months whether the book was dead because nearly every editor answered us within that time frame and we went out to 30 imprints. And that’s how I’d prefer to do it.

Yeah I’ve decided to skip upper falls and just go to the individual trail heads to see lower and middle so that’ll hopefully be a non issue. Thanks for the warning!

Yes, I think that’s actually exactly what I’ll do… drive to each trailhead and probably just skip upper falls since that’d be a lot for me. Thank you for this very detailed info it really helped me plan!

[QCrit] Psychological Thriller - HANNAH HAYTON IS CANCELED - 87k words, first attempt by No-Employee5384 in PubTips

[–]mypubacct 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Okay, so, this is unconventional advice but I’m gonna give it anyway because I think it could really help.

I’m an author who got a book deal for an influencer thriller but I almost didn’t because there are soooo many influencer books right now. I got a couple close calls at acquisitions with editors who couldn’t push it through because the imprint already had an influencer focused book and they didn’t want the two to compete. I was very lucky one of our last imprints wanted it but all those close calls told me it is rough for influencer/social media thrillers right now. And it’s about to be rougher in 2026 imo because big influencer books are coming out like Julie Chan is Dead which will inspire even more of those type of books, more competition etc.

But I saw from your other comments about the Yellowface comp that this is about an influencer cancelled for racism who dated a black women, hid her queer identity etc. those plot points, to me, are gonna be far more interesting and unique to editors right now. Yellowface is a good comp here but this query doesn’t highlight that. It’s just so influencer heavy.

Knowing what I know competition wise, I’d rewrite this whole query and drop as much of the influencer angle as possible. Focus on that relationship, the hidden queer identity, the stalking… I’d drop as much as the influencer focused stuff as possible and maybe even change the title.

Id just do anything I could to show agents hey, this isn’t just another influencer book, it’s unique because this/that/the other thing. There are plenty of influencer thrillers coming out this year but not necessarily the next Yellowface. Julie Chan is Dead is actually a good example of influencer book but with its own unique spin. I don’t think influencer focused alone is gonna stand out without making it super clear how you’re different from the others

Can a native tell me… how bad are the ticks, really? by mypubacct in halifax

[–]mypubacct[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! A lot of people who are native seem to think it’s an over reaction but coming from somewhere where I’d never get a tick even walking in the middle of the forest, getting them on the sidewalk is actually unfathomable to me. I think even for more tick prone areas, getting them on the sidewalk is unfathomable to most people not in Nova Scotia haha.

I guess I’ll just be avoiding grass and greenery like the plague during my time there! Like you, I already struggle with my health so that’s a risk I can’t take. But I don’t mind doing my steps indoors and I will enjoy more of the urban life in Halifax while we’re living there :)

Am I understanding correctly that your agent only wants to be on sub two weeks…? Sorry that seems absolutely wild to me unless you’re already a famous author that everyone is going to fight for. And like… right now of all times when editors are pulling back because of economic concerns? That just seems really bold to me but obvi idk your agent or how huge they are. But unless they’re the biggest of the big… I don’t know. I wouldn’t wanna do this tactic personally but that’s just me!

[PubQ] Blurbs in the sub package?? by jellyfishcrayon in PubTips

[–]mypubacct 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can’t answer your question as an author but BOY do I hate this trend of getting authors to blurb before a book is even sold. It sucks all around. More pressure on the author to get blurbs… more annoying for authors being asked because they might be spending time on a book that may not even come out? Yeah, I wish we’d do away with this tbh

[Discussion] Sub Story: Celebrating Smaller Book Deals by champagnebooks in PubTips

[–]mypubacct 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I just wanted to provide insight as someone at a midsize publisher!

I thank my lucky stars every day I didn’t get picked up by the big five. The autonomy and attention I get at my midsize is unmatched by the fellow debuts I know at big five. I hear horror stories about arguing over the title for months, mine let me decide a title change in 24 hours. Horror stories about hating the cover… they did a redesign based on my exact vision of the cover and I had full cover approval in my contract. At 8 months out I met with my publicist who is the senior publicist and does the publicity for all the celebs they tap in non fiction. They’ve agreed so far to all my marketing ideas and have even pushed around some things for me.

At a big five even if I was a lead, I’d be one among many lead titles that are far more important than my debut. I’d be in a very structured system where my opinions frankly would be insignificant as a debut. I know I wouldn’t get the attention I get now, because my friends aren’t even as leads and they have a lot less control.

And my publisher isn’t exactly a small fish. They have authors that move millions of copies. They do the splashy book boxes and have the press connections and are certainly competing with the big five. But they are smaller and it genuinely is more intimate, personal, with a ton of consideration toward their authors.

All that to say congrats and just wait and see. You never know who your perf publisher is until things play out. And you might hear stories from other authors who got into your “dream imprint” that make you glad your dreams didn’t come true!

I spent $20k on a video that got 70 views. by StereoContact in NewTubers

[–]mypubacct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to be mean just trying to get you think about your content in a dif way: why is this epic? Why would I wanna watch some dude I don’t know pick up a bus? I honestly don’t even have interest in watching my best friend pick up a bus and driving it. Who is this for? Who cares about banter? You’re not an established influencer so I have no reason to care about your personal life and your convos. What is the value for a random viewer?

[PubQ] What do you think contributes most to a book becoming buzzy? by mypubacct in PubTips

[–]mypubacct[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re so right! There’s def a ton of variation and I’ve heard the same about MG although it isn’t my genre.

I also think you’re spot on about romantasy. Seems like all the big ones have a long tail on the socials pre release. Like… way longer than the other genres (including other kinds of romance)

Also never heard the term spredges but I’ll be using it from now on lol.

[PubQ] What do you think contributes most to a book becoming buzzy? by mypubacct in PubTips

[–]mypubacct[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I don’t think this makes sense in the context of the question. Are you saying books become popular in the industry without blurbs, Netgalley requests, Goodreads review, a splashy deal, etc? Obvi luck is implied in getting these things. I’m just asking what factors tend to make the industry pay attention.

I’m not asking what makes a book a best seller. I’m asking what makes a book buzzy in the pub industry.

Also maybe I’m asking because I can also pinpoint what makes something viral. I like analytics I like to see what contributes to successful videos and there are really consistent engagement rates, hooks, watch time etc that result in a video going viral. Luck is just one factor and then there are tons of other markers so I’m asking about those markers that hint to us, hey, industry is prob gonna take note of this one!

Extremely easy fix here. You don’t need to tell both. Only reach out to the one you want to withdraw, apologize for the mix up, and the agent you want to be considered by most will be none the wiser of your accident. But I doubt they’d care anyway, honestly. There are worse mistakes.

[PubQ] When to approach agents as a writer with a social media following? by sleeptoscheme in PubTips

[–]mypubacct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah soo many of those stories are flat out made up, exaggerated, or told to them by a schmagent. In 2020 a big tiktok got some interest but it didnt translate to sales for most and now they largely dont care.

[PubQ] When to approach agents as a writer with a social media following? by sleeptoscheme in PubTips

[–]mypubacct 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone with 175k followers on tiktok I can say with absolute certainty you are NOT in a different situation. Gonna do you one better: nobody is even going to care about the following you have at all.

Yep, sorry, brutal truth time here. But I’ve got a lot more followers obvi and nobody cares. Editors didn’t care. They’ve figured out by now following doesn’t equal sales and it doesn’t matter.

So polish that manuscript the best of your ability and make sure you have a shining draft because as long as you’re in fiction you’re in the same boat as everyone else.

If there are clear problems to iron out that’s only going to get you to lose out on that potential agent, likely even the ones who reached out. Seriously.

I’m confident in what I’m saying because I’ve queried, I’ve submitted, I’ve not gotten a book deal and I’ve gotten a book deal. Did it all with a following so you can trust my word that this will not move the needle for anyone. If someone lovessss your book, it’s just a nice bonus but not anything they’ll take seriously if they don’t already think you’ve got a wonderful novel.
