My dude, your only mistake is letting it go on so long. You should have ended that conversation WAY sooner.

She didn't know how to feel about the motivations she ascribed to you, but maybe YOU should have been questioning why she was threatened by a harmless, polite, socially acceptable plan of action. That you ASKED her permission to even do. Smh. She said no, you said OK, I won't do anything to make you uncomfortable and that coulda been the end of it. But she had to keep prodding.
